La-La Land to release 3-CD set of Star Trek: The Motion Picture Score
La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures boldly go where no soundtrack reissue has gone before with this deluxe 3-CD set of 1979‘s Star Trek: The Motion Picture, composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.
The first big screen voyage of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock was a high budget and ambitious undertaking that introduced Goldsmith’s famous and enduring Star Trek march (later used as the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation) as the cornerstone of an epic science fiction musical odyssey. Like the film’s refit starship Enterprise, La-La Land’s lavish presentation presents the score anew: fully restored, remixed and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters by Bruce Botnick, the original album co-producer and Goldsmith’s long time scoring engineer.
“To put together the complete score the decision was to go back to the original Analogue 16-track 2-inch 30 i.p.s. masters,” Botnick explains. “John Davis at Precision Audiosonics baked each of the 37 rolls in a convection oven at 110º for eight hours so that they were playable, then rolled out a marvelous 3M 56 IsoLoop 16-track machine with brand new heads. The tapes were resolved at 60Hz to maintain the original orchestral pitch and sync. The Analogue-to-Digital transfer was done from the 16-track through the latest Black Lion A/D convertors and recorded to Pro Tools X at 192kHz 24-bit.”
This 3-CD set presents the score for the 1979 theatrical release (filling disc 1 and part of disc 2) and also premieres the legendary early “rejected” cues that Goldsmith recorded prior to composing his famous main theme. The 1979 album program (much of which is performed and edited differently as compared to the film) completes disc 2, with disc 3 offering additional alternates (including those heard on the previous Sony expanded release) along with a wealth of bonus material. Among the highlights are a collection of early takes of the “Main Title” (including extensive stage chatter), isolated segments featuring Craig Huxley’s famous “blaster beam” and assorted synthesizer excerpts, the domestic CD debut of Bob James’ disco cover version of Goldsmith’s theme and Shaun Cassidy’s vocal version of the love theme, “A Star Beyond Time.”
Reissue co-producer Mike Matessino (who handled restoration and editorial efforts) collaborates with Jeff Bond on the thoroughly researched album notes which feature interview excerpts by Goldsmith, Botnick and performers Huxley and David Newman. The clamshell packaging and 40-page full color booklet are designed by Jim Titus.

By far the best Trek score.
I know this score was nomanated for an Oscar and lost. Does anyone remember what movie tune won and does anyone really care. I don’t. This is among the greatest movie music of all time. It should have won the Oscar.

Yeah… I’ve never heard of it either. Had to look it up.
The package looks good and a price of $35-40 would be fair for it. However… dagnabbit, limited edition, guys? Can’t you sell it via download as well? We all understand the trade-off: you don’t get all this cool physical stuff, but you still get the music itself at a lower price point. I mean, is it so much to ask, La-La Land?

I gotta say, I love the direction that’s being taken for Trek products these days. Something about it feels fresher or I dont know, a little more thought out. Between the newer comics, the new video game, the very cool posters, the resurgance of good books, the re-releasing of scores, prop replicas and so much more -it’s like the franchise’s property value is being taken seriously . And let me tell you, I like it.
NOW all that being said, I wish there would also be an iTunes releasing of these re-released scores. When it comes to the awesome sound system I have in my car and in my pad, I just dont use cd players anymore. I’m not going to play it on my bluray player or on my xbox360. Give me a different format so I can keep it along with all my other music.

I’m a huge film score collector and have bought many albums from La La Land, Intrada and Film Score Monthly and have asked them that very question. They all responded pretty much the same. They say that because they are small independent labels and that film scores tend to have a small fan base, they cannot afford the digital download licensing fees the studios seek.
I am all over this!
This is such a major score for cinema as a whole.
As someone who owns the original issue on CD and the re-issue (with the Roddenberry stuff), I’m curious as to exactly how much better this issue will sound on a reasonable stereo. Maybe Jeff Bond can clarify what all that baking does, as I thought we were “definitive” with the last release.
Next stop: This, plus ST5+8-10 & the incredible Voyager theme tied up as a Goldsmith Father & Son Trek box-set. I always thought the ‘Voyager’ theme was on par with Alexander Courage’s original, especially with that absolutely Trektacular opening intro montage.
Forgot to mention that, since a few were asking, it was stated on La La Land’s Facebook page that the retail price is $34.98.

I HAVE to have this album, I remember watching the TOS reruns on TV, then I heard there was a new movie! I watched TMP with my Late Dad and Mother at the cinema in December 1979; It blew me away! In hindsight, the film should’ve been much more, however, the music will always stay with me… As I write my own tales of the future…(wink)

Why did it take so long for the definitive edition of Goldsmith’s score (The 20th Anniversary Edition released by Columbia was missing the Fred Steiner material) to come out? I will definitely be looking into this!!

Have to check this out. By my count this is the third “complete” edition of this score, including a CD connected with the Director’s Edition I got on Ebay. I’ll have to see what new material it has, especially music for unfilmed scenes, if any.
I listned to some music A little Romance that beat TMP for the Oscar on You Tube. The Oscar voter’s were on some pretty serious drug’s to vote for that movie over TMP.
40 – The only legal editions were as follows:
– Original Soundtrack (released on LP, then on CD by Columbia/Legacy, 9 tracks, around 45 minutes).
– 20th Anniversary Edition (16 tracks on CD1 (64:50), Inside Star Trek LP expanded and presented on CD 2, Sony Legacy, gold slipcase)
Any other Complete or Expanded versions from eBay and the like were boots.
This release is the only legal release to feature the complete score, and it looks like it contains a lot of material even the boots do not.
One of the finest scores ever. Im so looking forward to putting this on repeat!

I wish they will release this in 24bit 96KHz. This music is too damn good for red book audio.
If Bob Orci is reading, perhaps the current Trek team could put in a good word for the guys who worked on the Directors Edition of The Motion Picture and help them get the funding to finally do a proper upgrade for Blu-Ray. The Directors Edition certainly deserves a proper Blu-Ray upgrade after all of these years.
What do you say Bob? You guys should have some sway with the higher ups at Paramount.

Wow. Did not know that jazz pianist Bob James did a disco version. Of course, Jerry Goldsmith’s score was majestic, beautiful and emotional. Get goose bumps every time I see the Enterprise dry dock scene.
I wonder if the blaster beam video will be included in the box set. I’ve seen some clips, but I want more. I love that thing. It has such an epic sound to it.

Dang!! I just bought the previous ‘Extended’ CD soundtrack around Christmas. So now I have the original soundtrack (on CD and audio tape), and the extended soundtrack… hard to justify a fourth purchase. (But somehow I’ll find a way.)
