Star Trek producer/director JJ Abrams is adding another project to his to-do list. This time his production company and Paramount are teaming up to create a new low-budget sci-fi/thriller, based on a spec script. More details below.
Abrams to produce another new sci-fi film at Paramount
Today Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures has bought an untitled spec sci-fi script from Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken. The film will be produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot. The writers are described as being "rising scribes" and the deal is said to be "pre-emptive" (as in Paramount buying the script to keep anyone else from buying). Campbell is currently working as the screenwriter on an English-language version of John Woo’s class The Killer, and Stuecken’s latest credit is as an associate producer on this summer’s next spring’s GI Joe movie.
The only details on the film are that it is "a contained thriller with sci-fi elements."
With two Star Treks, Super 8, Cloverfield, this project (and others in development) it is clear that Abrams is Paramount’s go-to producer for genre films. Let’s all just hope that JJ keeps his eye on the Trek franchise has he guides the sequel through the post production process for the next fifty-one weeks until its release on May 17, 2013.

Did someone actually educate him to the truth and he changed his mind?
I wonder if this will be like when JJ was doing Super 8 and ther projects and that delayed the sequel to 2013 or am I wrong on that? If they do a third and JJ continues to do other projects, which is good for him and his company, will that delay the third film to say 2018 or 2020? Then no Trek TV series until 2025?
Why would Paramount place another one of their tent-poles in a timeslot close to another? If “GI:Joe” is going to be moved to spring 2013, that can only mean the Trek sequel gets pushed back……………..yet again!
I’m really hoping that isn’t the case. There’s been enough delays already!

MJ, I thought you were just being very critical. But I looked them up on IMDB. And the stuff that they’ve worked on, is not my cup of tea. Stuecken was an associate producer on the terrible “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” Campbell was an assistant editor on some fomulaic stuff like Van Helsing, and Dungeons and Dragons. So I see your point. But in their defense, can I say they didn’t write or direct those films. I mean Scorsese worked for Roger Corman at one time.
I read that GI Joe was being pushed back so they can post-convert it to 3D. They’ve already spent a boatload to promote the film THIS year, now they’re going to spend even more to convert it to something we can easily do without.
Smart thinking, Paramount. Smart thinking….

If Mr. Orci wants to ever adapt a great time travel novel, I recommend David Gerrold’s “The Man Who Folded Himself”. One of my favorites.
It even touches on the Kennedy assassination.

In any case, just look at what Kickstarter is doing for independent film. And check out their website for all the really cool things that get funded there.
With Kickstarter and Indiegogo, it’s at least the chance of having a new ballgame.
You launch your campaign with a set goal of how much $$ you need, and a time limit to the campaign. If you reach your funding goal, you get the money. If you don’t reach it, you don’t get the money. If you get overfunded, you get the extra money too.
So, for example, Zicree wanted $75,000 to make Space Command. He got it in the first three days of the campaign. Now it’s at over $95,000, with 51 days of funding left to go.
So, if I launch a campaign, and raise, say, $50,000, am I allowed to then use that money to bribe somebody in Hollywood to make my movie?
What da ya mean it doesn’t work that way??!!

Yep,,,the stuff they worked on were “groaners.” I don’t see the next Orci or Lindelof here with these two hacks, but you never know.
BTW, for everybody taking potshots at JJ’s supposed recent downfall, how easy you forget how my favorite new show of the past season, Person of Interest” produced by BAD ROBOT, has been renewed for Season 2.
Anthony, just curious, why don’t you give Person of Interest the same love here as you have given to Alcatrez and some of the other JJ/Supreme Court shows/projects? There are definite sci-fi aspects of Person of Interest.

Let me make one thing clear. I didn’t say I could write better than Stephen King, I said my story about the Kennedy assassination was better than the story he came up with about the same subject. I think mine is better for two reasons: 1. I’ve spent many thousands of hours (over the past 40 years) studying the JFK killing, while King admits he hasn’t researched it that much. Therefore, mine is more accurate for background details. 2. King’s story paints it that Oswald alone killed Kennedy, which is absurd, while I illustrate a government conspiracy as the backdrop to my story, which makes for a more dramatic and compelling storyline.
Oh, and it’s a full-blown feature film screenplay, not a book.
