Urban Hints At SDCC Star Trek Sequel Footage + Follows Up On Cumberbatch Comment

Star Trek’s new Dr. McCoy is at it again. After making waves last week with his comment about Benedict Cumberbatch’s role in the upcoming 2013 sequel, now Urban appears to be saying that some kind of Star Trek footage is being released at Comic Con this week. See below for details on that plus Urban reacts to the reaction of his comment from last week.

New Star Trek footage at SDCC?

Officially Paramount is not holding any panels at San Diego Comic Con, which kicked off today, including no panel for next year’s Star Trek sequel. In fact, Paramount Pictures does not even have a booth at Comic Con to promote any of their upcoming films. Recently a number of the writer/producers for the film have talked about how it was not possible for them to get anything prepared in time for the big event.

However, Karl Urban seems to have a different point of view. The actor told ComicSoon:

"I can promise you that before the end of Comic-Con, some exclusive Star Trek footage, it’s going to come out. You’re going to find it. It’s going to come out."

I have checked with a number of sources, and I can’t find anyone who was able to back up Urban’s promise. It is possible that he knows something my sources don’t know. TrekMovie will continue to monitor things and try and see what Urban is talking about. Right now it is possible something viral is being worked on, I just haven’t been able to confirm it.

Karl also was asked by Coming Soon about his comments last week about Benedict Cumberbatch playing Gary Mitchell. He would not elaborate, but did offer this caveat.

"I’m really not at liberty to discuss anything about Star Trek. All I can say is that I did that interview after a 22-hour flight from New Zealand. I literally hopped off the plane into the interview."

Again TrekMovie has not been able to find any sources to back up Urban’s assertion that Cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchell. At this point my best guess is that it is some kind of misdirection or possibly even a joke on Urban’s part.

Interesting that he didn’t deny it. Of course he may have slipped up and realized that even a denial would violate the J.J. imposed gag order.

_______

I see.

Sure, sure…

:)

Karl, darling, I love you, but what are you doing.

Also, I wonder if Paramount’s entire Trek marketing budget is just ‘pay for Karl Urban’s plane ticket and let him do the rest’.

Sounds like he’s backtracking. He says he literally hoped off a twenty two hour flight into the interview. So he’s saying he had jet lag? Maybe he was dreaming about “Where No Man Has Gone Before?” Or maybe all of this noise is Bad Robot’s misdirection viral campaign. It does have us all talking without seeing a trailer. I still say the deflector dish should be named, the radar looking thingy. :-)

I’m guessing that Anthony followed up with his sources about the “villain.” Because we know TrekMovie is standing by its stories that the villain is Khan. Just think if you’re a trusted source, and you feed bad information to a respected website. That guy will never be a source for anything again. I’m not an expert on the use of sources. But if a source gives you false information, I wonder if you can disclose or expose the guy.

Said wrong character, admitting as much. Jet lag is the enemy of accuracy.

Salivating for that footage!!!

Well, it’s no harm no foul in my book, Karl. Even if you were telling the truth, there’s enough confusion stirring around that nobody’s willing to believe it outright. Just be glad that you are from New Zealand. Who knows what kind of posts your little “slip” would have been subjected to here if you weren’t. :-o

All I know is that the next time Zachary says something about filming for a few hours before taking a break, or when/if Zoe or anyone else says something equally innocuous like the work was challenging for the actors but they all had fun, certain people will need to stay quiet if they feel a self-righteous rant coming on…

Footage.. Finally a teaser trailer maybe?! Which even if it is will leave us none the wiser to what the sequels about if the first trek teaser is anything to go by! How about revealing a title….

Oh, great. NOW a main cast member teases the possibility of some new Trek footage at SDCC? That’s not “official” enough for me to care to go, and it’s too last minute now. I’ll just wait for it to hit the internet, which should take about 30 seconds after the footage is shown.

Well I am sure theres got to be a trailer by the end of Comic Con or with TDKR. The Man of Steel is having 1 coming out around this time and its coming out around the time of Star Trek XII. Them editors better get the pedal to the metal.

Well at least your willing to admit your buddy in the mail room at Paramount can’t get you EVERY scoop!

Maybe he’s just confused about the Kre-o trailer footage that was promised earlier in the week?

TMP Bones: “What the hell kind of strategy’s this!”

Nu Bones: “Damn it, I’m a Doctor… not a PR consultant!”

Whether Karl Urban did indeed reveal more than he should of, none of us are any closer to finding out if it were true or false – Urban could come out and say the borg are in the next movie and we’d all be like wha! OMG!

So I don’t think it really matters, its just another rumour that could be true or false…. Perhaps the greatest JJ Abrams mystery ploy is to get the cast to throw out names of possible enemy’s, plots etc…

It’s got me around to watching that rare unaired pilot version of “Where No Man Has Gone Before” — an extra to be found on TOS Season 3 Blu ray.

It feels like it’s set in a parallel universe to the colourful series which followed.

Could be a good move. A human villain in Gary Mitchell. That’d be a first for a Star Trek movie wouldn’t it? Benedict can pull that off easily, whether he’s going to end up all shiny eyed, God-like and possessed or not.

Awesome! Lol he revealed the character in a Jet Lagged stupor.

I’m going to begin referring to some of his information as “Urban Legends”

Hmmm… Karl Urban is promoting “Dredd 3D”, definitely…

……………………………………Helloooo…. Bones… ;-) :-)

The cat is definitely out of the proverbial bag.

Part of me hopes this a sign of the Star Trek sequel being fast-tracked for a sooner than next Summer release. If there’s a confidence surrounding the film, then it could provide a shot in the arm, raising the profile and all the knock on interest to other parts of the franchise currently dipping a bit. It suddenly picks up whenever there’s something new happening…

@15. Kirk, James T. wrote; “Urban could come out and say the borg are in the next movie and we’d all be like wha! OMG!”.

DON’T PROVOKE THE BORG! ;p

So, they’re doing footage. The elite have re thought their position. And or, read sites like this and changed their mind. “Not possible” and yet here it is.

@20, I agree he confirmed his slip up.

In jet lag veritas.

Jet lag or not – Karl just said that the character that Cumberbatch is his “Gary Mitchell”. I take that to mean that the villain may have similarities to Gary Mitchell/that type of person.

#8 – Puts on ignore…:(

When did they say ‘not possible?’ I thought they said they’d see how post-production was doing. Heck, they were asked about comic on just as filming was beginning to wrap up…

Whatever.I think I will just stay in a drunken stupor till next year. I grow weary of all the secrecy.

Okay, it’s for sure Gary Mitchell.

I told you so!

I’m sticking to my prediction that there will be no footage shown at the San Diego Comic Convention. The con is coming up in just a few weeks, so I doubt that J.J Abrams has had time to assemble a trailer. Plus I think he doesn’t care for conventions. He revealed the cast at the 2007 con, but that was because he was rebooting the franchise. He needed to hook people in. He doesn’t have to this time.

I just wish the actors and writers stop jerking us around with the bullsh!t.

I know some on this site find this “fun”, but this has been going on for well over a year. Actually more if you factor in the numerous times they promised a deadline and wound up taking even more time to write the script.

SHEESH!!!

Maybe Karl will be walking around SDCC with his iPhone showing people stuff he shot from the set.

From Collider.com’s editor-in-chief on Twitter:

“Karl Urban just told us that the STAR TREK sequel secret footage will premiere on YouTube very soon!”

So keep your eyes peeled.

#26 – LOL!!!! :-D

“Very soon” could mean anything.

From an hour to a month. :-)

30. Red Dead Ryan – July 12, 2012

SDCC is already here. If a trailer is coming, we won’t have long to wait.

Maybe JJ is pranking Urban, who will end up seeming like he has a permanent case of jet lag.

#32.

YouTube? LOL! I don’t think so. The Collider guy is probably just pulling it out of his ass!

#30.

Thanks for the correction. I still wouldn’t expect any footage to be revealed.

Damn, the second statement was meant for dmduncan (#35.)

DAMN TYPOS!!!

No, YouTube actually makes sense. It’s got tons of promotional material on it and there’s no sequel website gone public yet.

It’s time. Let the teasers begin…

They don’t need to drop any big spoilers or anything. Even a teaser like the Enterprise under construction teaser that began the Trek 09 hype would be appreciated. Just something to generate a little buzz and let people know “hey they’re working on a sequel to that awesome movie that came out a few (too many) years ago…

I’m guessing that the “exclusive” footage won’t be shown AT Comic Con, but will be released before it ends.

#39.

I don’t know. I think J.J Abrams would rather prefer to show his first Trek sequel trailer on the big screen before a blockbuster movie. The trailer will end up going up on YouTube eventually anyway, so I don’t know why he’d premier it there.

Another possibility is the trailer is premiered before or after a showing of a Trek movie (perhaps “Star Trek” ’09) somewhere as “surprise gift” to the audience.

I wouldn’t count on anything be shown, nor a decisive comment about Cumberbatch’s role. Not going to happen until the first official trailer is released.

Generally, apart from whatever lines they’ve read and scenes they were in — actors tend to know not that much about everything else going on with a movie. Not saying it’s true with Urban. Who knows — maybe the cast’s appearing there. So they can say nothing in person.

37. Red Dead Ryan

Footage from many movies make their debut on YouTube. Keep in mind this is not necessarily a trailer, it’s probably more of a sneak peek, an few quick seconds of footage to serve as an appetizer. Or rather, a drink before the appetizer. :)

Personally, I think Urban needs to lay off the cordrazine. ;)

#45.

YouTube seems a bit “small” for some director of a big-budget movie to put previously unseen footage on.

46. Red Dead Ryan

It hasn’t been too small for other directors of big-budget movies. :)

How much you want to bet Karl’s tipping us off to an ARG with the clue’s being Gary Mitchelle and Youtube and now we have to go out and find the next clue. I think the ARG kicked off about a year before the release so we’re probably coming up on time for it…

Me am skeptical, especially since the source has been pulling our leg since day one. But this seems especially mischievous of Urban, if it’s not true. Could be Karl is trying out for the next Mean Girls film?
