IDW has released previews for their Star Trek comics coming in October and it is going to be a busy month with four different books (not including variant covers). @1 It’s a photoshopped picture using a still from Mission Impossible and a starfleet uniform. It’s not from the new movie so don’t read too much into it.

I remember the newspaper comic strips. They featured in the Daily Mail in the UK as i recall. I can remember buying the paper, briefly, for them.
And does anybody actually care how Scotty and the lizard thing met?

Did anyone see Scotty sweating bullets in the IDW/Trek Ongoing Issue 13? I mean, the man has a confidence problem for sure.
I wish we would see a story where keenser is dispatched once and for all. He is by far my biggest complaint about the last trek movie.
And I really enjoyed Trek 2009, except for that friggen Keenser.

If Scotty takes the conn in the next movie, will he have to have his stupid little chum sitting on his knee before he can make any decisions? Sheesh!
Have never understood why Orci and co. regarded Scotty as the c”omic relief” and gave him a sidekick. I was hoping for a tougher, more authoritative Scotty in the next movie – you know, someone who bore some resemblance to the original – but if they’re shoving out comics with this ridiculous creature, looks like it’s a vain hope.
Simon Pegg playing Scotty is like Al Pacino playing JFK. Right actor, wrong role. And Keenser? Yikes. Generally speaking, I love the Orcibrand comics and pre order them. This one, though, meh.
And I’m embarrassed as a lifelong Trekkie that not only have I not seen the post-TMP serial but I wasn’t aware it existed. Why is Ilea in it if it’s post-TMP though? Unless it’s Lt. Sinead O’Conner.
At the San Diego Con, I was told that classic Trek artist Gordon Purcell was pencilling the Trek/Who book starting with issue 4. I love his art and think it will look awesome with JK Woodward painting it!

Never knew that Trek newspaper comic existed either. Guess it just wasn’t picked up by my local newspaper. Amazing the things we didn’t know about for lack of an internet back then!
I’m waiting for a continuation of IDW’s excellent TOS comicbooks.
I remember the newspaper strips very well! They started right after the movie came out and I collected them. I taped them to sheets of paper making my own comic book. The daily strips were B&W, but were color in the Sunday paper.
One of the things I liked so much of the strips was how accurate they drew the new Enterprise. I think I collected the first three stories before finally losing track of the daily strips.
I remember Scotty being blond in some of the 1960s/70s comic books. Seems oddly fitting to have the comicbook blond Scotty in a reversioned Trek that has driven out the turgid pomposity of recent years and returned to the fun of the original show and its licenced spin-offs. And Keenser was funny to everyone who doesn’t see Trek as a religious text and a map of the future of the human race!

I’ m more interested in Star Trek ongoing #14 and Star Trek The Next Generation: Hive. They look great!

And please don’t presume to speak for “everyone” when what you mean is that YOU thought it was funny and you think anyone who doesn’t must be wrong.
Majority opinion in polls indicates that most Trek fans think the wretched creature is a complete waste of space, who was put in there as a sop to the kidees and to sell more toys.

As always, I look forward to the IDW lead-in. I for one actually enjoyed Keenser for what he was; a quick, fun character (he was literally in two, maybe three scenes). I hope that maybe he will be included to a greater extent in the sequel and maybe we’ll get to see him a bit more fleshed out. He has the potential to be an interesting side character, perhaps along the lines of Neelix in Voyager, and I think the comic will meet the same great standard that all the others have.
Also, hoping for an Archer cameo in this issue, whether Jonathan or an ancestor.

Scotty and Jar Jar………I mean Keenser comics? Nope.
Keenser wasn’t kringe worthy but okay he also wasn’t a character that was ‘needed’ either. But before you overreact, go watch Star Wars eps 1-3 and Return of the Jedi and then honestly try to tell me that Keenser was anywhere near as bad as Jar Jar or an Ewok. He just wasn’t.
Those Hive comics having the Borg and Picard ally with each other? The only time Starfleet allied with the Borg was against Species 8472, so makes me wonder if that is who the villian in Hive is.
Speaking of Borg alliances, The Doctor allying with The Borg in issue 6 of the Next Generation/Doctor Who crossover? (smh)
And back to Hive…WOW. Freaky promo cover of Locutus of Borg as the Abraham Lincoln monument with the Borg motto above. Makes one think.

You’re in a hardcore, humourless fanboy minority, while Star Trek has (finally!) refocused itself on the mainstream audience it was originally aimed at, who clearly had no issue with the fun (frankly, minor) character and wouldn’t be seen dead on a forum with you and me.

I don’t get the “turning a character into comic relief” idea. They tried that unsuccessfully in TNG movies with Worf and Data – terrible. Keenser was unnecessary and unfunny. I too like the idea of Scotty being portrayed as intelligent with a sense of humor as well as tough as nails when the moment called for it. Scotty was not awful in the last film, mind you, but he was the least true to character for me. Simon Peg has the ability to play him properly IF he’s written properly. Here’s hoping Scotty gets to show his chops at being a miracle worker in the next film, Star Trek: None of Your Business.
Used to love the old Star Trek comic strips in the late 70s. I think they appeared here in the UK in the Daily Mail newspaper. My grandad used to cut them out for me.
I still have them stuck in a scrapbook somewhere – particularly remember the one where they’re in spacesuits on a moon and they encounter the hibernating aliens. I also used to love the refitted TMP Enterprise (still do – it’s the only Enterprise I’d genuinely call beautiful.
Ah, those were the days as a seven/eight year old…
HATE Keenser!!!! And he’d best be gone in the sequel!!! I’ll walk out if he’s in the next movie — ((grits teeth)) — I swear it!!!!

I agree that Keenser wasn’t as cringe-worthy as Jar Jar or an Ewok, but as you demonstrate, he summons the comparisons:]
A two-part episode around an interesting idea, encounter, maybe even something si-fi-ish, or a bit of character development of main characters, including Scotty, might be more deserving…; esp. with a two-part Tribble-sode on the way.

…which would be cool if he were treated seriously, rather than as a cutsie comic relief tool.
Never knew about the comic strip–pricy collection, but from comments I’m seeing here, I’ll at least check it out.
So what is Keenser was a silly character. Did it wreck the movie? No. Does it add to the movie? maybe not. I think that balances out to Keenser being a non issue. I liked the alien idea that they were trying to push with Keenser’s look, and I didn’t too much mind the guy.
The only thing I would suggest is that they give us a little more reason to believe that the guy is an engineer. Obviously it’s too late to make any suggeston for this film, but I would like to see a bit were Keenser has to prove to the rest the enterprise crew who don’t know him that he is a really good engineer. Maybe, he is integral in getting the ship out of danger, or suggests somthing that our relativly green Scotty hadn’t thought of. I would like to see that.

@35 well…I mean…I wasn’t the one who brought up JarJar or the Ewoks, other posters kept comparing the characters :)
So I’ll just say Keenser is FAR less annoying than Naomi Wildman, Neelix, Dr Flox, Harry Kim, and early Wesley Crusher (because despite what others might say, Wes was far more enjoyable during the latter seasons of TNG. I think I gained respect for him like I ended up respecting Nog after he manned up and ended up on the bridge of the NuDefiant.)
If anything, I’d equate Keenser to a Tribble. I don’t find either “cute” but I also don’t mind either within the Star Trek universe. The simple fact that the Klingons sent warships to destroy the Tribble homeworld makes them even edge out Keenser in the annoyance department. I mean really, warships destroying the homeworld….was it really that serious in the prime timeline???
Scotty now blond? Hair dye in Scotty’s case. Simon says, “Thank god, I don’t need to have all that crap put in my hair that is already thin”
OTOH, Chris Pine’s lovely thick head of hair can stand a little lightening up…
I generally enjoy Pegg’s Scotty (took me a while to get used to it, but I like it now). But for the comic cover could they not have photoshopped his hair just a WEE bit darker to match the movies?

What is actually wrong with Keenser? Frankly, I don’t get the hate of this character by some. Nor do I get the hate for ewoks etc either.
I am curious to know about the species Keenser comes from. He is as legitimate an alien species as anyone else (same goes for ewoks). I don’t understand the apparent closed-mindedness around here but it might shed a little light on why so many plant and animal species face extinction on this earth.`
I am tired of people trying to second-guess JJ Abrams and the writers’ motivations for writing a character and using an idea that seem similar to what was in the Star Wars movies. Seeing Keenser in the movie did not make me think of ewoks or anything else. He was just this unusual short, two legged furry creature with strange eyes, and clearly alien (as in not knowing of any animal on earth being like this creature, Keenser). Why can’t the Keensers just be who they are, in the same way chimpanzees are, well, chimpanzees?…
@42 I agree. Honestly never thought of Ewoks or JarJar until I saw some posts here. There are loads of threads online that will go into why there’s so much frustration with Ewoks and to be honest, I think if they had been in the expanded universe say in Star Wars comics and not in ROTJ then fans would have a different feeling towards them. I just dont think that they fit within that film. And I understand what they were going at -the small furry guys with sticks and stones going up against the imperial troops with their big bad machines- but I think a better use of that idea would’ve been to make the Ewoks something more of a tribal race like in Avatar. And it felt like so much forced cuteness after Empire Strikes Back. At least, that’s my oppinion of it.
Yeah, I don’t get the hate towards Keenser either. I think one legitimate criticism that can be made is that he wasn’t really fleshed out. Not that he has to have lines, but maybe he can be shown operating or repairing an engineering console or something.
As for the Ewoks, I think they’re neat. Yeah, they look like teddy bears, but so what? They actually had intelligence, and showed resourcefulness when they were able to defeat the Imperial Troops with sticks, stones, and battering rams.
Jar Jar Binks, though somewhat redeemed in the “The Clone Wars” animmated series, will always be remembered as a hipster doofus klutz clown.

He was a carefully and sparingly used character. Always thought Scotty could use a ‘little’ help in the engine room (hee hee). And at least (unlike the obnoxious, offensive Jar Jar or even the annoying Neelix) he didn’t talk much…. ;-)
