Koenig & Russ Reprising Trek Roles For Indie Web Pilot ‘Star Trek Renegades’ – Watch The Trailer

The team behind the 2008 independent mini-series Star Trek Of Gods And Men are back with plans for a new web series, again to be directed by Star Trek Voyager’s Tim Russ. Just in time for Star Trek’s anniversary they have released a new trailer featuring Walter Koenig reprising his role of Chekov and Russ as returning as Tuvok. The series promises additional Trek vets as well. More info and the trailer below.

New Indie Web Series: Star Trek Renegades

Producer Sky Conway and director Tim Russ are teaming up again, following their 2008 collaboration with Star Trek: Of Gods And Men. This time they are planning a brand new web series called Star Trek: Renegades. The team have kicked off on production of a pilot which they hope will result in a new ongoing web series.

In addition to Walter Koenig and Tim Russ, many of those who were on board for Of Gods and Men are back for Renegades including Gary Graham (Alien Nation; Soval, Enterprise), Garrett Wang (Harry Kim, Voyager). Joining them will be Manu Intiraymi (Icheb, Voyager) and Richard Herd (Admiral Paris, Voyager). The team are also promising to add some "hot" and "rising" actors to the cast.

Here is the brand new trailer for Star Trek Renegades.

Not much as been revealed about the story except that it will be "bold, edgy and a little dark." The official announcement also states:

Renegades will be a departure from previous Treks – delving into the dark side of the human psyche, pushing our heroes to their limits, forcing them to carry out actions that they never would have as Starfleet officers. The rules have changed, and they realize they might be the last hope to save the Federation.

Star Trek: Renegades will be action oriented, filled with suspense and espionage; all while exploring new worlds, encountering both familiar and new alien species, and boldly going where no Trek has gone before.

There is also this intriguing image of a ship on the website which looks almost like a hybrid of a Klingon Bird of Prey and DS9’s USS Defiant.

The Renegade team have also just released a couple of videos from Walter and Tim discussing the project.

As the logos in the videos indicate, there will be a crowdsourced funding element to the project on KickStarter, but that has yet to be launched.

mmmm… not liking what I see. but then there’s barely any footage

It was interesting. I enjoy seeing the two actors in their roles… I’m gonna watch!

I loved Star Trek of Gods and Men. I hope that they can make this as well as the first. I can’t wait to see.what they do. A new series would be so cool to see.

Plenty of room for an original take on Star Trek. I’ll watch it.

Regards.

It’s hard to tell the production value from the short clip, but I like seeing Mr Koenig going ala Picard up top…maybe SHAT should boldly go as well!

“This is not your grandfather’s ‘Star Trek'”

GRANDFATHER’S?

Insulted. Not watching.

Looking awesome. This team has its finger on the pulse of what a lot of fans want in their indy trekking and I for one can’t wait to support.

#5 Krunch — I second the motion… Shat its time to try out the Bruce Willis look and shave it off man. Besides if it doesn’t look good you can always just wear a toupee… ;-) Love ya Shat.

“This is not your grandfather’s ‘Star Trek’”

GRANDFATHER’S?

Insulted. Not watching.

——————————————————————————

Yes believe it or not many of the people who watched TOS and even TNG are now well into grandfatherhood. There nothing insulting here unless you have a sensitivity about your own age already in which case I don’t know what to tell you.

Who mic’d the individual pitches? Yikes.

I’ll certainly check out this venture. Thought Of Gods and Men needed another edit or two, because it dragged, but it wasn’t terrible.

Lame.

I guess these actors don’t have a hope in hell of getting some actual non-Trek roles in Hollywood, and so they have to continually go back to the well time and again.

And these so called “hot and rising” actors that are purportedly joining the cast are probably not good enough for Hollywood films and shows.

A crew who must operate as renegades, be perceived as outlaws, sounds an awful like what JMS had planned for the crew of the Excalibur in CRUSADE and what actually happened to the Sheridan and company in BABYLON 5. Sounds a bit like B5 in ModTrek.

Wow Red Dead… That was pretty harsh.

As long as it’s not the awful crapfest that was “Of Gods and Men,” it has a shot. That was one of the worst fan films I’ve ever seen. Ineptly written, poorly directed and badly acted.

Getting over the impossible age of Chekov still on duty post-Voyager in the prime time-line and the horribly fitting uniform he’s wearing and the bad audio, cheesy effects, and hackneyed writing, this could be ok.

You know, getting over all that minor stuff.

It’s not a bad idea… Unless you’re entirely in head over heals for the humans can’t have conflict ideologue… I personally have never been. That’s why DS9 was so awesome… It’s also why TNG “Conspiracy” had so very much intrigue and potential that was never hashed out. I truly hope that’s what direction they take. I would love to see that unresolved loose thread tied up in dramatic fashion.

15. Captain Otter — Time travel perhaps???

Tim Russ rocks and he loves Star Trek. I will watch & support it.

Naysayers gonna nay…

I dig the design of the ship on the website… Defiant/BIrd of Prey

#7 – No, some of us want to see Star Trek’s roots. You remember – to see out new life, yatta yatta. What’s this crap?

No. 13 – Red Dead Ryan should have been permanently banned from posting on this site (his apology be damned) for the completely inappropriate and disgraceful things he said a month or so ago about the young woman featured in William Shatner’s “Get a Life” documentary.

They were truly ugly words that define what it means to be a pathetic Internet troll.

Dark?!?!?!?! Star Trek is not dark!! Where is the bright and hopeful future??? And that horrible title?! Renegades?! Seriously?! And I don’t see a colon in that logo at all?!?! What a slap in the face to Gene!!!

I’m so done!!!!!

#13.

Just pointing out the obvious. If you really take the time to think about it, what I said is true.

#22.

Yeah, you aren’t so high and mighty yourself for bringing that up. We all moved on.

Remember kids.

Everything has to be dark and edgy.

Hope and optimisim? NAY!

I’d love to be wrong and have this be a fantastic new indie Trek series, and that ship looks really cool, but the rest looks pretty bad. I still wish it the best, and I might watch it if I hear good things about it, but that’s all.

We’ve seen bright and cheery Trek… A lot of it… I am ready for more BSG style Trek with a dark, gritty, “are we gonna?” survive feel. I love all Trek don’t get me wrong but to all those making Treks right now I say this… I am ready to take a Trek Into Darkness…

Hehehehe See how I did that. ;-)

26. njdss4 — You won’t hear more good than negative if you are only reading online because 9/10 of the posters are the negative troller, whiny, complaining type. The positive people who like the stuff the naysayers whine about usually don’t post or even try to debate with them because a) its not worth the effort and energy and b) it usually doesn’t make any sort of difference anyway.

I’m holding out hope for:
.
Star Trek: Bright and Cheery
.
get the redshirts out…. and have no fear!

Tim Russ has the Vulcan voice. Love the suit.

I’ll definitely watch Renegades… ;-)

I thought Tim Russ’ “Of Gods And Men” was pretty entertaining.
I don’t hold fan made films and projects to the same level of scrutiny of the big budget features. I take into account the mostly donated budgets and the other constraints and I just watch them as I would new corners of a bigger, all-inclusive Star Trek canvas. They’re entertaining passion projects; like audiobooks with video cameras. And occasionally they can REALLY surprise you (Phase II’s “World Enough And Time” for example; it’s George Takei’s best outing as Hikaru Sulu, IMO).

Besides, it’s new ST and you can watch it free of charge in your home whenever (and if ever) you choose.
Who’s complaining?

;-D

point 1 – it’s the only way we’ll ever get to see anything set in the prime universe.

point 2 – now we know why they chose Star Trek to Darkness – because Star Trek Renegades was already taken. ;)

High five to these two (and the other Trek alumni) who devote their time to projects like these to give us more of the franchise we love.

These guys rock.

Have Koenig and Russ been doing any Non Trek work lately?

Never saw Of Gods & Men, didn’t have a fast enough connection when it came out then forgot about it.

I’d be digging it if it were set in the lost period between TUC and TNG. Voyager is easily the worst of Trek, I really have no interest in seeing Voyager trying to be DS9. I’d like to be more positive, but I’d rather tell the truth.

This looks awful. Why can’t Tim Russ and co. get real jobs? They just seem pathetic now.

I like Tim Russ, but sadly he was part of the unfortunate trend in later Treks to play Vulcans not as emotionally restrained but as permanently irritated.

This is great! Everyone’s been clamoring for original Trek content. And here we have two great actors reprising their original roles! Man, imagine if they can rope in some of the original TNG actors–something we’ve also been asking for, especially with their weak Nemesis sendoff. I, for one, am thrilled with this project and can’t wait!

I appreciate that these guys are essentially paying to play characters I like and provide new Trek content, but how do they avoid getting shut down by Paramount? It’s one thing for an organization like “New Voyages” with its troop of “let’s put on a show in the barn” amateurs to get away with potential copyright infringement, but these guys are the real deal doing unauthorized versions of “Star Trek”.

@27, We haven’t seen much happy Trek in a long time.

Last two seasons of Enterprise were dark. The three last TNG films were dark. DS9 was an entire series about grimdark. Voyager was rather meh.

Besides all of that, and the silliness of the remark itself. Star Trek was never EVER supposed to be “battlestar galactica grimdark.” The very essence of what STAR TREK is, is optimism and hope. Saying you want that to be dark is like asking for chocolate to come out of a dogs butt.

I don’t get it. Why is Ed Asner playing Chekov?

#34 – Russ has appeared on one or two Disney Channel tween shows since Voyager ended. I think one of them was Hanna Montana, but darn if I remember.

So, is this set in classic Trek movie era? And Tuvok is supposed to much younger than the Voyager/NG time frame? I guess that will work…unless it doesn’t contradict his age if so established in Voyager…

But it does look like Chekov is wearing an NG era uniform… so how could still be alive?

#42 lol
Love Walter though. What a lovely guy he seems to be.

Mmmm chocolate from a dogs but…….

My dogs name is literally Q… Now about that chocolate… ;)

If Chekov is still alive in the NG time era, shouldn’t he look ancient as Deforest Kelley did in “Encounter at Farpoint”?

ok I could get into this
