Chris Pine To Receive CinemaCon Male Star Of The Year Award

2013 is a big year for Chris Pine with Star Trek Into Darkness in May and Jack Ryan in December. And heading these two franchises has earned Pine the Male Star of The Year award from the National Association of Theater Owners.

Pine Named CinemaCon Star Of The Year

The National Association of Theater Owners has announced that Star Trek Into Darkness star Chris Pine will receive the “CinemaCon® Male Star of the Year Award” at this year’s CinemaCon. The annual CinemaCon is the largest convention for the motion picture theatre industry, held this year from April 15-18, 2013 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Pine will be presented with this special honor at the “CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards” ceremony on Thursday evening, April 18, in The Coliseum at Caesars Palace.

“With this summer’s ‘Star Trek Into Darkness,’ the eagerly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s ‘Star Trek,’ and then at year-end, the release of ‘Jack Ryan,’ without a doubt, 2013 is going to be Chris Pine’s year,” said CinemaCon Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser in a statement. “Chris Pine has emerged as one of Hollywood’s hottest and most accomplished young actors and CinemaCon is thrilled to honor him as its 2013 ‘Male Star of the Year.’”

Past recipients of ‘Male of Star of the Year’ include Ryan Reynolds and Jeremy Renner. Other honorees this year include Harrison Ford (Lifetime Achievement), Armie Hammer (Male Star of Tomorrow), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Breakthrough Filmmaker) and Kathleen Kennedy (Pioneer of the Year).

Pine getting the Star of the Year award for 2013 almost seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy for the theater owners association who awarded Chris with the "Male Star of Tomorrow" award at their 2009 convention (called ShoWest at the time). 2009 was of course Pine’s breakout year, starring in JJ Abrams Star Trek.

Good choice

He is great and the right guy to carry Trek forward

Wow. That’s pretty big. Congrat’s Chris!

I agree, congrats to Chris..

It seems that he and Zoë saldana are the super models of the new trek universe.

They get all the press coverage and they are in the entertainment news most of the time.

I don’t think it was random that him and Zoë were picked to host the technical Oscars.

I guess it makes sense as both chris and zoe are the biggest stars in the cast.

I will also add that Into Darkness looks like a Kirk Movie so Chris is likely to get the most attention when the film is released.

Wow…winning awards before anyone actually saw the movies. Kinda like handing out the Nobel Peace Prize to someone who had not achieved peace yet…..

Hopefully he’ll live up to the honor. Pine and Reynolds can share stories at the awards show….

Ever thought how these pop culture roles perpetuate themselves over time? Chris certainly seems poised to be the next Brad Pitt, and Trek is very fortunate to have him. Congrats!

James Dean … Brad Pitt … Chris Pine
Diana Ross … Donna Summer … Whitney … Beyoncé
Charlie Chaplin … Jerry Lewis … Jim Carrey
Steve McQueen … Bruce Willis … Jason Statham
Osmonds … New Kids … Backstreet … N Sync … One Direction
Julie Andrews … Streisand … Celine Dion

Shouldn’t they give out these awards at the END of the year after everyone has seen the movies Chris Pine is starring in?

Talk about jumping the phaser….

Very cool. Star Trek made Chris Pine cool. Made me a nerd.

Keachick,

I know you have had a rough time of it here lately. Let me bestow the olive branch to you here by saying to Congrats to Chris Pine on this award, as I am sure this is bringing a smile to your face today.

I am being sincere here — no hidden meanings or sarcasm.

Best, MJ

Wow never heard of this award but good for young Mr. Pine! He deserves all the recognition he gets.

And @ 9. MJ-
GOOD ON YOU! Peace!

:-)

Congrats to Mr. Pine. I look forward to seeing you in both Star Trek and as Jack Ryan. I wish both films much success (… Star Trek especially, for reasons ;)).

#9 MJ:

That was lovely of you. :)

Congratulations to Captain Fine!!!

And now pine-nuts begin the ritual “fingers crossed” … because if the movies are not a “big box office hit” … we have to prepare ourselves to face the poisonous vitamin that loves annoy us… lol

btw … apparently someone saw a screening, and it looks like this person was disappointed because it was not about STID but about Jack Ryan … unfortunately it was more important to make a “cool” comment than to be objective on the subject … so I do not know!

;-) :-)

Rise of the Guardians did a $100m domestically, and Star Trek into Darkness will easily do that… If Jack Ryan is good, it can do it too. Three $100m movies in a row would officially make Chris Pine an A-lister in Hollywood’s eyes.

He looks like Chris Hemsworth in that awards picture.

MJ, that is a wonderful gesture of goodwill.

#14. Well he should, Hemsworth is his dad.

Thank you, MJ. I think we tend to feel strongly about various subjects at times and take each other the wrong way. I don’t mean to be a pain and I really don’t think you do either. Bless you.

Thatta boy, Chris Pine. Wonderful news and not before time. Bryan Singer and William Shatner describe Chris as being a lovely person, which is also kinda cool to read. Clearly, Hollywood is recognizing this man’s talent as well.

I am very happy right now.

May 9 can’t come soon enough!

#13. Chris Pine’s Agent

knock knock knock …

Are you kidding me?… We need much more than $100m … unfortunately ROTG was considered a failure domestically … I do not know what happened … the movie is great!

Make no mistake the eyes of hollywood are tough! … and my fingers are crossed… coz I wish the best for CP! ;-) :-)

Rise of the Guardians was also an ensemble cast, as is Trek, CP doesn’t come into his own until he’s a headliner, so Jack Ryan will be the first test of his star power…

Enjoy it, Chris!!

(And don’t marry some stuck-up actress.)

Keachick and MJ — get a room.

Totally kidding!

It’s nice to see people getting along despite big disagreements — it’s something I need to do to better in my real-life relationships.

Hey, at the end of the day, all of us old-timers here need to love each other.

“We got history”

“Rise of the Guardians was also an ensemble cast, as is Trek, CP doesn’t come into his own until he’s a headliner, so Jack Ryan will be the first test of his star power…”

I agree. This movie (Jack Ryan) is where he either moves up to “A-lister territory, or remains a very desirable actor, but not A-list material.

He’d be the first Trek actor to achive A-lister status. I have mixed feelings on this — if he doesn’t get to that level, he would likely sign on for more Trek movies, but it he does, he will be looking for more complex roles and will be eyeing Oscars, etc.

He’s so fine, what a guy. I hope it doesn’t go to his head

I wonder if Mr Pine is going to be his generation’s Harrison Ford …!

Both are great actors who are believable and likeable action heroes.

Congratulations Chris!

Fingers crossed that this means that they will be screening Into darkness :) hehe even more excited now.

He is a fine American Actor. Star Trek ID is gonna create debates between Pine and Cuberbatch’s performance.

Congrats, Chris! I love him, but I feel like Hollywood keeps trying to make him ‘happen’ (“Gretchen, stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen!”) by putting him these glossy high-profile movies, but he hasn’t quite stuck yet, like somebody like Channing Tatum has. Hopefully this year.

Chris eyeing more complex roles? Kirk is a fairly complex character, especially if he is not just confined to the bridge and battling John Harrison types.

@29. Nony

I agree with you about Chris Pine. He’s good, but I really don’t think the role of Kirk propelled him as much. I think with trek being out of the spotlight since the 2009 film, I can’t recall him being in any other big blockbusters. He’ll definately get there eventually.

He was in that ‘out-of-control-train’ thing with Denzel, directed by Jerry Bruckheimer, a few years ago.

#32. AJ

Unstoppable was directed by Tony Scott… btw, a great movie according to critics!

Awesome! I’m so happy for Chris :) I didn’t know Jack Ryan was coming out this year. That is fantastic! Man, I am really behind on my Capt Fine news…

Thank you to whoever extended the olive branch to Keachick.

Congrats Chris!! So glad you are involved in Trek!
