Happy New Year from TrekMovie

Happy New Year! Because of holiday travel and vacation plans over this next week we’ll be checking on the site intermittently, so have some patience if your comment doesn’t show up right away. Our review of the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise will also be a bit later than hoped, due to the timing of the release being right after the new year, review copies were sent the week of Christmas, right in the middle of visiting with family. So don’t forget that Enterprise Season 3 comes out on Blu-ray on January 7th in North America.

Star Trek: Renegades new 2 minute teaser video

Fan production Star Trek: Renegades has released a new 2 minute preview video. Renegades is from the same group that made the incredibly popular TOS-era fan film Of Gods and Men. The production has multiple Trek alums involved as well as other familiar names from Sci-Fi TV and movies. Walter Koenig, Tim Russ (also directing), Robert Picardo, Gary Graham (Soval in ENT), Sean Young (Blade Runner), Manu Intiraymi (Icheb in VOY) and quite a few more. It is expected to be completed by Summer 2014. It is ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation’s main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s normal jurisdiction. For this, Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s former security officer and current head of the newly reorganized Section 31. Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew – mostly outcasts and rogues – even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what is causing the folding of time and space, and stopping it – at all costs. But will they be able to put aside their differences and stop trying to kill one another in time to accomplish their mission? Click on to see the new trailer

Rest in Peace, Tom Deishley

It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of Thomas Deishley, known to Trek fans as General Motog from Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. Deishley was found dead in his home in Las Vegas from an apparent gun shot wound. He was found during a welfare check after friends reported that they had not been able to get a hold of him for several days. Police say there was evidence of a break-in. Friend of Deishley and Star Trek: The Experience historian Vernon Wilmer recently posted a video tribute to Tom. Click more to see it, but have your tissues ready.

New writers added to Trek 3 UPDATE: Variety says Cornish is out

While this isn’t 100% official, The Hollywood Reporter just broke a story that says two new writers will be joining Roberto Orci in writing the 3rd Star Trek movie script. Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are out. The new blood comes in the form of J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. These relatively unknowns do have a relationship with Bad Robot. The pair were tapped to write the script adapting the graphic novel Boilerplate in 2011 (as yet unreleased) for Bad Robot. That’s it though, there’s no other news on Trek 3 in the article, other than the common assumption that it’s supposed to be out in 2016 to coincide the 50th anniversary of the franchise. The next Star Trek film is untitled and unscheduled, but Paramount and Skydance are hoping to have a film in time for the franchise to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016 Source: THR UPDATE: In a throw-away line in Variety’s coverage about Payne and McKay they buried a pretty big detail. Variety now reports Joe Cornish will NOT be the next director. Paramount and Skydance were at one point in talks with “Attack the Block” helmer Joe Cornish, but he is no longer involved. Abrams admits Koncealing Khan was Mistake, hopes Joe Cornish is next director

In a recent interview with MTV, J.J. Abrams reflects on Into Darkness and now admits that it “probably would have been smarter just to say upfront” that Khan was in the movie.   On Khan: “The truth is I think it probably would have been smarter just to say upfront ‘This is who it is.’ It was only trying to preserve the fun of it, and it might have given more time to acclimate and accept that’s what the thing was,” he said. The idea to keep Khan on the D.L. apparently came from the studio, which, according to Abrams, didn’t want to give the impression that a comprehensive knowledge of “Star Trek” cannon was required in order to enjoy the latest installment. On Joe Cornish: “I don’t know if Joe Cornish is the guy. My guess is that’s up in the air. I adore him and love him and can’t wait to see what he does next. Hopefully it will be ‘Star Trek.’ Whatever it is, he’s brilliant. ‘Attack the Block’ was one of my favorite movies of the year when it came out.” Read the full article and see the video of the interview over at MTV.com
