Paramount has a Christmas present for the fans with the announcement of a release date for the next Star Trek feature film, which is now set for July 8th, 2016.

The announcement comes soon after word that Bob Orci, co-writer of JJ-Trek 1 & 2, stepped down from his directorial debut of the third installment of the franchise, which he also penned.

Ever since news broke last week that Roberto Orci would no longer be directing the next Star Trek film, there has been a great deal of confusion, speculation, and misinformation regarding Orci’s continuing role as well as the future of the feature film franchise. BREAKING: Deadline Hollywood’s Mike Fleming is reporting that Roberto Orci will no longer be at the helm of the next Star Trek film: Roberto Orci is beaming off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek 3. Rampant rumors are swirling and I’ve confirmed there is fire behind the smoke that he won’t be directing. I even hear that Edgar Wright and others are on a short list to take the job. Orci stays on the project as producer, I’ve heard. The film is intended to be Orci’s debut as a film director, as well as his first solo project after parting with long-time writing and producing partner Alex Kurtzman. This story is very fluid at the moment, and TrekMovie will bring you more details as we get them. UPDATE: Variety is also reporting that Orci is no longer directing.

One of the most ubiquitous pieces of technology in the Star Trek universe is the communicator, be it the “flipper” from The Original Series, the wrist communicator from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, or the combadge from The Next Generation. These devices allow the characters an immediate and easy way to communicate(when they’re not being jammed by a mysterious force), and allow the show’s writers an easy way to relate relevant plot information. The folks over at tech site The Verge, using Star Trek’s communicators as a starting point, have produced a fun and thought-provoking video about how we use technology to relate to each other and how advances might further change the way we communicate, both good and bad.
