Justin Lin, director of Star Trek 3 took to Twitter today saying, “Let the next Starfleet voyage begin! #StarTrekBeyond #LLAP” confirming suspicions many had held since TrekMovie broke the news about the title back in April. Attached to the tweet is an image of what appears to be the shoulder of a Starfleet uniform featuring a familiar patch.

Star Trek Beyond — it’s (almost) official!
Director Justin Lin appears to have just confirmed the title for the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Except for a press release or announcement from Paramount, pretty much everything points towards ‘Star Trek Beyond’ as the official title. TrekMovie was the first to report back in April that the title ‘Star Trek Beyond’ had been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America. Shortly thereafter, Simon Pegg used the title in a post on his blog. Just last week, Paramount acquired StarTrekBeyond.com, and now the director is using the monicker publicly on Twitter. Although Paramount has made no official announcement, they haven’t made many waves about the production on the whole, leaving some to wonder — when will they start advertising for this film?
With a new director taking the conn, we are not sure what to expect from Beyond. Lin is a master of action set pieces, having directed the third through sixth installments of the Fast and Furious franchise. He’s no stranger to comedy either, having directed several episodes of the NBC series Community.
Our First Glimpse at Beyond!
Even more exciting than the film’s title (which has been floating around for months now) is the photo that Lin attached to his tweet, giving us our first ever glimpse of something we might get to see on the big screen next summer. The patch, which appears to be on the shoulder of a new Starfleet uniform, features the Starfleet insignia interposed with the UFP emblem. The same patch was seen briefly in Star Trek Into Darkness (see the screen grab below) on the shoulder of the crew’s flight suits. Of course, this may not even be from a uniform and could be from a seat cushion, duffel bag, or who knows what else. It might not even be something used on screen. But, the fact that we are getting a little taste of something, anything, from the new film is exciting!
The patch tweeted by Lin was also seen on uniforms in Into Darkness.
It’s clearly high-quality. As the first visual proof that this movie is in production (aside from the photos of the cast in Vancouver and of NuSpock), this is a welcome sign. Even more so is Justin Lin’s use of social media.
meh
Best of luck with the new film!
I like the fact that Justin Lin is a social media savvy.
“Although Paramount has made an official announcement, they haven’t made many waves about the production on the whole, leaving some to wonder — when will they start advertising for this film?”
An excellent question, Kayla.
PS: I think you forget put “not” here:
“Paramount has made an official announcement”
No, I think the sentence makes sense the way it is, since it would be inconsistent with the “although” if Paramount had in fact not made an official announcement.
“Although Paramount has not made an official announcement, they haven’t made many waves” would imply that not making an official announcement is contrary to not making any waves.
The patch closeup is clearly of a knee patch.
Hey Ahmed. Thanks for the copy edit. I did mean to say that they have NOT made an announcement!
Star Trek Be Yawned
I like this ship. ‘Tis exciting!
I think uber fans should shut up and be thankful we are even getting a 3rd Trek film…. Too much griping the last 5 years about this franchise… The first 2 of the new films were fresh, fun, exciting, and a different iteration than what we’d seen in previous incarnations.
If you’re that upset a 3rd film is coming out and it’s being directed by Justin Lin, of Fast and Furious lore, then don’t go and see it!!!
Be nice to see some more gratefulness on Trek boards in general though. Nuff said.
Darn, Ahmed wins this round. Oh well.
Back to admiring the patch….
@12. Hat Rick,
” Darn, Ahmed wins this round. Oh well.
Back to admiring the patch….”
LOL
With the movie underway, I think we can expect Beyond’s production values to be at least as good as the last film. Given Lin’s experience with action sequences, I suspect Beyond will have some clever action sequences hopefully better than what we have seen before. Not to say the ones we’ve had in the last two films were bad. Not at all.
What would be fun are some decent starship action scenes. Kirk outwitting his opponents; i.e. the Elayaan of Troyus episode where he lures the Romulan ship by having the Enterprise playing ‘dead’; of course the famous prefix code trick used in Wrath of Khan. And, please, since the Enterprise is the Federation flagship, no more scenes of the ship being crippled with just one or two shots from an enemy vessel’s weaponry. The ship should be able to engage in and survive a sustained fight, imho. Maybe a saucer separation sequence in combat ala the Prometheus seen in Voyager?
Please make better use of the supporting cast. We had some good Uhura scenes in Into Darkness. Beyond should have some strong Chekhov and McCoy scenes since they were short changed in the last movie.
It would be cool to see how maybe surgery is performed in the 23rd century. Have McCoy performing some kind of emergency procedure in sickbay on a surgical biobed. A 3D holographic projection is shown above the patient, with McCoy doing his thing. As blood spurts out (CGI, of course) it is held in place in some kind of gravitational containment. Medical dialogue is exchanged among McCoy and Nurse Chapel as the scene continues to its end.
Not sure what to do with Chekov. Its established he’s a whiz kid. What stretches believability is that he looks like he’s 19 or 20 and by the start of Into Darkness, he’s made Chief Engineer?? Then the movie has shots of people say 2x as old or older just pushing buttons. Can’t believe they couldn’t have found more seasoned personnel to have taken that position.
Since we know nothing about the storyline for Beyond, one would hope it returns to make a statement on some contemporary issue or situation. The really decent episodes had some social commentary..today its race relations (the recent killings at the SC church) or the rise of ISIS an global terrorism..global warming?
I like it! I hope he keeps dropping nuggets like this throughout the production.
Star Trek Lives!!
Me thinks it’s time for the “Beyond” tab to be inserted at the top of trekmovie.com. :-)
I sincerely wish Justin Lin, Simon Pegg, and the film’s cast and crew a bon voyage. I fervently hope they manage to bring home something truly special. That said, my expectations at this point could hardly be lower. Maybe that’s for the best.
Let’s hope this is a Great Star Trek Story.
From Screen Rant:
“The sequel will see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as James T. Kirk and Spock, respectively. Other returning cast members include Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana, and Idris Elba (Pacific Rim) will star as the new villain. With all the pieces in place, we can confirm that production on Star Trek 3 has now begun.”
My post here on Trekmovie on April 23rd:
“Elba will be in the film. You can take that to the bank.”
And I nailed it once again !!!
Like me or dislike me, but I am seldom wrong on judging/postulating/predicting all things related to the nuTrek movies.
#11: Saying “I think uber fans should shut up” just makes you look like an idiot. This is a discussion board. Telling people to shut up here is like going to the supermarket and telling people not to buy food.
@20. BatlethInTheGroin – June 29, 2015
“Telling people to shut up here is like going to the supermarket and telling people not to buy food.” And unlike someplace like Whole Foods, you won’t have to take out a loan to do it.
@ BattleinTheGroin
True, but the opposing idiot viewpoint is usually from Romper Room, so at least this dude bring some balance in the war of the toddler-talk between morons. LOL
Are those patches for sale somewhere?
I like the more open attitude JL has to the fans and his tweet has now been picked up by so many sites including news sites.
Talk about free publicity.
@24. photon70,
Yep, I like that about Lin.
#MysteryBoxNoMore
ryan – My thoughts exactly! But then,I do love the new movies as well as all the old cra…..stuff….lol!
And that patch should totally be given away at Comic Con,if Paramount were there.
J-R!
I hope Mr. Lin uses social media regarding this movie the way Bryan Singer (someone I’d love to see make a Trek movie, BTW, hopefully after he’s done with the next X-Men) has with the X-Men movies!
JoeTrekFan: “t would be cool to see how maybe surgery is performed in the 23rd century. Have McCoy performing some kind of emergency procedure in sickbay on a surgical biobed. Like it. Should be gory too. Let the good doctor demonstrate his legendary talents finally and chew up some serious scenery while doing it. Something on the level of alien. Go ahead: scare us. Trek could do with a little more adult content.
That patch IS cool. Wouldn’t mine snagging one. That’s the kind of stuff they should market. Not everyone builds models.
wonder if any of @boborci ‘s story is in this, or if it’s 100% Simon Pegg’s?
Grateful? We should be grateful that some self-professed Trekkies got their dream job and delivered uninspired, convoluted, lazy plots? We should be grateful they cashed in and made millions while crapping on the legacy of the franchise?
Yeah grateful.
What don’t the ignorant aBoblogists understand? Being critical of something does not mean you don’t want it. Just the opposite. You want it. You just want it to be good.
@ 30. Giez – June 29, 2015
“wonder if any of @boborci ‘s story is in this, or if it’s 100% Simon Pegg’s?”
According to Pegg it’s completely new.
=============================
Den of Geek: Are you starting with your own fresh idea? You’re not working off the previous script?
Pegg: No. It’s completely new. I haven’t read Bob (Orci)’s script and they didn’t want us to. So we went back to the drawing board. We had creative meetings with Justin and there were things he wanted in there. I haven’t written like this before. I’ve never been a custodian of something, it’s usually mine what I’m writing. Whereas with this, you’re given a bunch of stuff — “Look we want this in it and this in it.” Or Justin will say — he’s got an amazing visual mind, Justin. He’s great at that kind of choreography. So he’ll say, “What if this happens?” So Doug and I go, “Okay, right, let’s try and get that into it.” So it’s an interesting process.

GAME ON!
Trek Movie announced it? Lol like you had the exclusive.
Feels a bit symbolic, ‘patch’ …
Well, considering if Orci had remained on to direct, he’d of been tweeting out pics of the feral cat on set, and naming it Popsicle Cumberbatch or something . Even if it is a photo of a patch, nice to see that Lin isn’t being oblique with his comments…..
Chalk it up to STiD being so desperately feeble, but I’m struggling to get overly interested at this point.
Also good news — the cast seems happy to be filming/ in Vancouver (well, at least according to instagram posts from a couple of them — Saldana was singing in her car in a video yesterday). I’m hoping that bodes well for the script etc.
19. “Like me or dislike me, but I am seldom wrong on judging/postulating/predicting all things related to the nuTrek movies.”
Are these just guesses/hunches (it’s fine if they are), or do you have some sort of secret intel?
—-
As for the social media, I’m happy with little glimpses (would be great, albeit entirely unlikely, to pull magic strings to get Trekmovie on the set for an hour) but I hope they focus on making a great movie — keep the marketing for later.
Just my view, I know we all have different opinions on this… but I think Singer has sometimes overdone it with the ‘making of” stuff during filming, to the point of spoiling/showing way too much of the movie (even if you’re trying to avoid it). Little teases/glimpses = great.
14. “Romulans”?
That patch doesn’t look to be standard embroidery. Any one familiar with whatever process was used to create it?
I’m actually excited for this. Lin has already confirmed he grew up a Star Trek fan, so he already has more going for him that JJ. Also, he directs action very well, which keeps the Paramount suits happy. But, his focus on family in the F&F films are what is missing in JJ Trek, so I hope we can see more of that.
Also, I hope that between Lin and Simon Pegg we get a more logical story this time. I know all movies have flaws, but there were some embarrassingly bad plot holes in the last two.
I’m also glad this one will be Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof free. So, here’s hoping!
@ 19. Prodigal Son – June 29, 2015
And I nailed it once again !!!
You didn’t read the article then MJ. If you actually followed the reference in the article you quoted (thanks for not posting the link BTW) they give Idris Elba’s casting, you’ll find they are using the same old March news article that hasn’t been officially confirmed:

Like me or dislike me, but I am seldom wrong on judging/postulating/predicting all things related to the nuTrek movies.
I suppose it’s easy to be deluded when you don’t actually read your sources.
@ 4. Ahmed – June 29, 2015
I like the fact that Justin Lin is a social media savvy.
Isn’t that pretty much a job requirement nowadays? :P
@ 36. Buzz Cagney – June 29, 2015
Chalk it up to STiD being so desperately feeble, but I’m struggling to get overly interested at this point.
I don’t blame you. After all the problems with this movie’s development over the past 2 years or so, Paramount should be working harder to convince audiences that this movie is actually worth it. Instead, they give no official announcements.
I love this!
After first being dismayed, I am now encouraged Star Trek Beyond is being directed by Jeremy Lin, a “Star Trek” guy as opposed to you-know-who a “Star Wars” guy.
Other than the core seven characters and possibly Idris Elba have there even been any rumors about who is in the new movie?
Is Alice Eve coming back as Carol Marcus?
@ Eric L
Elba’s in the movie. I guarantee it. Period.
@ Jack
I assess what information is available, apply logic and “horse sense” and then go with it. I am not one for waiting for “official announcements” as a crutch to avoid making predictions/postulations//judgements. I’ve been wrong a couple times, but that’s the price I am willing to pay for being out in front on topics like this.
@ Just Another Salt Vampire
My sense is Eve is NOT coming back. I am not as certain as with Elba, but I’d rate it an 80% chance that she will not be in this movie.
