Why would anybody buy this given the resolution and quality is so much better on Blu-Ray?

What’s next, remastered on VHS? Laserdisc?

LOL

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for such a set to appear in the US. We’ve had similar boxsets over here in the UK/Europe for years now.

Too bad, X-Files in HD could be that price NOW!

Oh well, long live Trek! :D

Markus

DVD?!?!?! uuhhhhhhhhhhh no. It’s about to be 2016 before long, how bout we try Blu Ray at the least and try to get some 4k projects going.

@ 1. Prodigal Son. No doubt, however I feel the complete blu-ray set is coming soon after. Like anything else, they will release the individual seasons, then the box sets.

I am wondering though, is it new packaging, or is this just a fancy sleeve for the individual seasons.

One thing I do like, is the font for the lettering is correct. Drives me fucking nuts when they can’t get it right. The individual TOS blu-ray seasons use a generic font, not the classic TOS font. Same with the TOS blu-ray movie box set, individual movies and the new Wrath of Khan blu-ray all use TOS lettering when they should use the TOS movie font. But the TNG blu-ray box set and individual movies use the correct TNG movie font! WHY!!!!!

With regards to TWOK steelbook font. My only guess is the new movies use the TOS font, so all the old movies should have the TOS font so that new fan can recognize it, marking pure and simple.

I would also like all the movies released in steelbook WITH PROPER TEXT FONT as well as movie poster box art. Why is it so hard to use the movie poster for the box art.

I am so anal about this shit.

I am really surprised that the link to Amazon goes directly to their page that credits Leonard Nimoy and James Doohan FIRST as the cast…

Where’s the Blu Ray Directors Edition of Star Trek, TMP? Where’s the Directors Editions of Wrath of Khan and the Undiscovered Country in Blu? Who care about this release? DVD: been there done that.

Thomas Jensen –

The reason we haven’t seen any of those on blu is because they were all mastered in standard definition. Doing DE’s of TWOK and TUC in HD is not a big deal, but TMP, unfortunately, would require a great deal of money and time because all the new FX and the recut itself were done in standard def.

Hopefully we’ll see new, remastered versions of all the films next year for the 50th Anniversary. Wouldn’t hold my breath for the TMP DE, though.

Typical Trek offerings… we Trek fans seem to always get the short end of the stick in regards to collectibles, and it’s looking like the Anniversary of Trek will be no different than any other milestone.

They still make DVDs?

Plain DVDs still exist? LOL

Hmm, it seems they are repackaging and clearing out old stock. I wonder what’s in store for the 50th anniversary? This silence is unbearable.

@9. Amazingly, DVDs are still massive business in some countries. The vast majority do not give a hoot about Blu-Ray picture clarity, lossless audio etc. I still buy the odd DVD now and again should there be no Blu Ray equivalent available.

How about a bluray of the original series Bloopers? Paramount/CBS surely has a 35mm or at least a 16mm print they could do a 4k scan and treat the loyal Trekkers for all their support for 50 years. And while you at it, throw in all the original series preview trailers and NBC promos….all in 4k as well.

Unless anyone who has the original series on bluray, no restoration or re-scanning the preview trailers had ever been done. They just put on the old dvd standard resolution trailers on the bluray set…and it looks awful.

Do they even make DVD players anymore?

DVD! How quaint.

Why am I not surprised CBS has been drinking Drano? (rhetorical)

” What’s next, remastered on VHS? Laserdisc?” — Prodigal Son

Next? During their heyday such remaster marketing was quite quite common as it was and is for DVD. Its even happening on blu-ray with “remastered in 4k” being hawked on BD disks that are only 2k.

Since I never purchased any of the remastered stuff I will most likely purchase this. The price is out of this world!

DVD’s? Who still watches DVD’s?… (rethorical question)

@13
Absolutely Bryan.

I have been trying for years to see if anyone has the 35 mm prints of the bloopers in order to restore them, instead of watching a 4th generation VHS copy of an 8mm print. They are painful to watch in their current condition. I think the show deserves better. :)

This set is a good deal for those who never got the TOS DVDs and are not on Blu-Ray (format is only about 1% of the home video market I believe).

I’m very happily on Blu, and of course have the TOS Blu sets, but most are not in that boat.

I WANT LASERDISC / BETAMAX COMBO!!!!!!!!

Not sure if the new Star Trek Beyond movie is going to be the only product for the 50th, but it looks like it. Now Doctor Who had a most excellent set of new product for its 50th anniversary. It had the 3D Show(which rocked BTW), and the TV Movie about the first Doctor Who(which also rocked). Now both of those shows, and a series of special’s were put out by the BBC in 2013. Now Paramount/CBS could make a ton of money, getting something like that going in time for next year, but no such luck. I bet we will see some quickly put together clip show with some snippet interviews with the original cast and the like. I would love to see a full budgeted TV movie about how Gene R. got Star Trek going. Didn’t they read Marc Cushman’s wonderful series of books showing that Star Trek was actually the number one and/or two show in America at the time, not the low rated show that NBC execs. said it was. Read these books people at CBS/Paramount, and look at the money you could make , getting more projects going other than the new Beyond movie. Well a fan can dream , ehh?

According to the Amazon description, this set has Spanish and French subtitles. As a hearing-impaired person, I would find the lack of English subtitles to be a deal-breaker.

I don’t own a Blu-Ray player because I simply don’t think it’s necessary yet. I’m perfectly happy with my upconverting DVD player…

“What’s next, remastered on VHS? Laserdisc?”

Sure, why not? Everyone seems to be buying vinyl 33 1/3 RPM phonograph records now, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if VHS becomes the next big thing in video media…

I’m a bit confused: TOS Remastered has been released already on DVD, 7 years ago:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DHXT6G

Is there anything new here, that wasn’t in the previous release?

YES REMASTER THE BLOOPERS PLEASE!

Vegetable! Vegetable!

What is the order of the episodes? Production or Broadcast? If in production order (as it should be), I would consider a re-purchase; otherwise this is the same as the 2009 release, just a new package.
