On Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary, What Does The Franchise Mean To You?

Tomorrow marks 50 years since the first episode of Star Trek hit the television air waves. The TrekMovie staff take this opportunity to talk about how some of us came to love the franchise. If you’re reading this, it’s probably safe to assume that Star Trek means something special to you. Whether you’re a super fan, a new fan, a Trekkie, or a Trekker, we want you to tell us: what does the franchise mean to you?



RETROSPECTIVE: The Original Series Remastered Project

10 years ago, the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek was fast approaching. HDTV was the future. CBS knew they needed to do something to be sure the “one that started it all”, The Original Series, was ready for that future. Produced from 2006-2008, The Original Series – Remastered (TOS-R) was a huge undertaking that came with a variety of challenges and fan controversies. Keep reading for an in-depth look back at the project.



Round-up: Star Trek 50th Anniversary Merch

With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek finally here, we thought we’d show you some of the more interesting anniversary products you can pick up to commemorate the event. We know there are some great books out there, including The Fifty Year Mission (in two parts, reviews to come), The Star Trek Book (review also coming soon), and National Geographic’s Star Trek The Official Guide to Our Universe: The True Science Behind the Starship Voyages, and of course the new 50th anniversary Blu-ray set. There’s also IDW’s Star Trek 50th Anniversary Cover Celebration. But if you’re looking for something a little quirkier, check out some of the items in our round-up, many of which were announced as partnerships earlier this year.



Mission: New York Day Two – The Next Generation, Discovery, Feminist Fandom, and Trek’s Film Stars

The second day of Mission: New York kicked off on the main stage with a reunion of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast including LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, and Marina Sirtis. Kelvin Timeline-stars Peter Weller and Bruce Greenwood The most-anticipated panel of the convention was on Star Trek: Discovery with series consulting producer and writer Nicholas Meyer along with writer Kirsten Beyer. Beyer revealed that DSC would be a cross-media production involving television, novels, and comics.



Mission: New York Day One – Nicholas Meyer, DS9, Enterprise

The first day of Mission: New York kicked off on the main stage with a wonderful Deep Space Nine cast reunion. The boys of Enterprise had the crowd bursting with laughter over their antics and stories from the set. However, the highlight of the day was a short question and answer session with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan writer/director Nicholas Meyer, who shared stories of the film’s production before debuting his director’s cut in 4K UHD.

On September 8th, 1966, television changed forever. 50 years later we find ourselves looking for new ways to celebrate the Star Trek franchise. EDITORIAL: The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Voices of the Few

Vocal minorities tend to lead perception. It’s not necessarily because they are right, but because they are loud, consistent in message and sometimes the only mouthpiece. Lately however, that vox populi has taken its gripes and issues to an entirely new level; one that ridicules, mocks and bullies creators online, as well as posting critical and negative comments to anything and everything covering something that supposedly brings these fans great joy. All of these behaviors can easily be attached to countless fandoms currently occupying the zeitgeist, yet sadly it seems to have taken a firm hold on Star Trek, which is disappointing considering what the franchise represents.
