Syncing ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Trailer With ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Is Downright Eerie

The biggest thing to hit the web in the last week is definitely the teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Our friends over at Screen Rant noticed something interesting: it seems to sync up rather closely with the audio on the trailer for the Superman movie Man of Steel. There have been other trailer syncs as well.

We here at TrekMovie also noticed the trailer had a similar flow to one we’re pretty familiar with–the teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness. Watch the synced-up video below.

Full disclosure: we had to do a tiny bit of editing because the Last Jedi trailer is 16 seconds longer than the one for Into Darkness. So we left Star Trek’s audio unchanged and cut a bit of video off the beginning and the end of the Star Wars trailer, squeezing it just a wee bit to fit the length of the Into Darkness trailer. No audio was removed or changed from Into Darkness and no video was removed from The Last Jedi except for the first and last few seconds of mostly fading in and fading out to black.

Of course Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi have more in common than teaser trailers. Both are second movies in franchise reboots directed by J.J. Abrams, who also directed & produced Into Darkness. Last Jedi is directed by Rian Johnson, and Abrams is an executive producer on it.

So is this almost seamless fit just a coincidence, or does it have something to do with how modern trailers often fall into a pattern?  Tell us what you think of this sync below.

There is a formula that works for everything.

Formulaic, like most big budget crap.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was software that automatically made all trailers. I know that there are companies whose sole job is to compile trailers. So I’m not surprised at all to see this.

Good lord, I wish my job left me enough time in life to have sat there and even thought to research and edit a comparison video for movie trailers. Mama mia.

YES of course it’s all a formula and maybe even the same trailer editing team.

This has been a staple in entertainment since chord progressions in the music industry.

Bad Robot trailer template?

Seriously people, I did a video on this exact subject – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc71YvWG0GQ

Maybe you can send us some Pizza Rolls

@Harry P
Brilliant then, and brilliant now.

wait are you seriously Mr. Plinkett..

Also the Movie Authority should find out who in the hell is responsible for the Spoiler Trailer ?!!

I like it!

But did not Like it. Too lazy.

Well its only a teaser. Teaser are not meant to really reflect the film. Its an appetiser.

IN A WORLD…. WHERE ALL TRAILERS LOOK THE SAME….

Gotta admit, pretty damn cool.

Give me a break lol, it’s a teaser trailer. What is it supposed to do? Tease the film. It did that. Feels like too much of a stretch to connect with a trailer that caused a lot of noise on the internet. I’ll take these teasers over the teasers of the past. Anyone remember the teaser for Generations or First Contact that used footage FROM Generations of the Enterprise that was destroyed? ….yeah, I’ll stick with the teasers we’ve been getting. The problem comes when you’re getting dozens of full trailers and international trailers that end up telling and showing you the majority of the film.

Maybe the end up showing the majority of the film because the film itself is so simple that only a child could imagine any depth to the story.

And what the heck is up with this teaser trailer crap. I swear this is part of the dumbing-down of the western world.

I’m fine with teaser trailers (the first trailer for a film that is supposed to “tease” the coming for said film). What I cannot stand is the teaser for the teaser that’s been going on lately. The whole “in 3 days, see the first trailer for ____.” That is pure stupid.

It’s been clear for many years that trailers, and movies for that matter, have been come increasingly formulaic. Come on, A New Hope and The Force Awakens…hello. I think almost every horror movie trailer now opens with a “ping” from a piano. Although I didn’t realize how bad it was until I saw this video. Remember who the target audience is, Millennials. Millennials are not very bright.

I am one, and you are sadly correct.

Finally people are waking up to how pathetic, repetitive, and nauseatingly mind-numbing movie trailers, as well as the movies themselves, have become today.

Haven’t movie trailers always followed popular formulas?

“Being like everybody is like being nobody.”

Please show more care when using the word reboot in the future. My understanding is that a franchise reboot carries the connotation of starting again from the beginning while making significant changes to continuity, not to be confused with retcon which makes significant changes without necessarily starting from the beginning. Kelvin Timeline/JJVerse, while dancing around the concept of a beginning and end using time-travel tropes, ultimately feels like a reboot and perhaps is. Star Wars 789, however meant to revitalize the brand, are just sequels.

j4yn1ck5,

According to those marvelous people that publish the OED:

https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/reboot

It can mean either “restart” or “revive” for a series of films, so your understanding is partial, incomplete and wrong. Please show more care and check an authoritative source before attempting to explain proper usage.

How about posting the reverse – the video for Star Trek Into Darness & the audio for Last Jedi?
