Some great photos here. Love the exposed pipes in the corridors like the TOS Enterprise. Tilly’s work station has switches and Tyler’s uniform seems to have black detail instead of the Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Tyler is wearing the the less gaudy tactical uniform shirt, the collar is shorter and symmetrical, the vest goes over it.

I like how in this show it looks like we may be getting different uniforms to fit the different occasions. I never liked how in the other series, they mostly used one uniform for everything. Then again, in defense of the other shows, they may not have been able to do that budget wise.

Not feeling those uniforms, but other than that it’s hard for me to understand how any fan of TOS wouldn’t be enthusiastic about the look of this show, at least.

Discovery has a lot of potential to evolve over the run of the series, the uniforms will change to a updated cage look and in the final episode the original series uniforms.

Dream on! 😂

^

Have no idea where you’re coming up with that? Especially since everything looks different minus the phasers. You’re also seem to be forgetting this already takes place around the time Cage did. So there is nothing to change because we are ALREADY in that time period.

Its a visual reboot. Its not going to suddenly look like TOS at the end with mini skirts and big buttons. Its like the KT films it simply looks different because it is.

True, but the news this week was that the look will “evolve” towards that of TOS, and though I agree we probably won’t be seeing minis (more’s the pity) and resin buttons, I can see other ways it might.

Exactly that’s what I mean it has potential to change, it’s just visually updated, we might even see the cage uniforms on other ships in season 2 (and it’s official season 2 is happening) and it’s obviously going to tie in to TOS at end of the series just remodernised.
Kind regards :)

@martin,

“and it’s official season 2 is happening”

Relevant tweet from Jason Isaacs in response to a simialr statement:

“Whoever’s feeding you information must be giving Trump his climate change data.”

‘Discovery’ will most likely get a second season. However, other than the two unknown sites that reported a renewal, there is nothing official or even a rumor on reputable news sites yet.

Thanks, just realised Not found an official source just rumours

CBS has stated that no decision about a second season has been made. Pretty reasonable, given that the premiere is still weeks away.

Correct. I would think CBS has a decision already. They extended the first season and they know the quality of what they’re seeing (good or bad). Since they arent subject to usual ratings, that wont really matter.

They likely are already seeing increased subs for All Access. So unless subs really flatline around Discovery’s premiere, I’d imagine they have already made a decision. But they will announce it an the appropriate time.

Probably similar to the Good Fight – after the first couple of episodes so they can tout the success of the series with a renewal.

The creative team is mapping out a 2nd and 3rd season, that we know.

I can live with the look of the ship in Discovery not being identical to NCC-1701, provided that, as time goes on it gets close enough that the comparison is not jarring, so that the two fit visually in the same universe. Right now based on the trailer and other photos of the Discovery bridge, they do not fit visually. But to be fair, in The Cage NCC-1701 did not have a colorful interior. It was drab. Also, the Discovery designers announced the look will change over time to fit in with the look of NCC-1701 (as we know NCC-1701 from episodes after The Cage) as Discovery draws closer to the appropriate time. We have no knowledge of when the interior of NCC-1701 adopted the look it had when Kirk took command, other than it had that look as of 10 years after Discovery but did not have it as of the time of The Cage. So Discovery has time. And there’s nothing to say each ship adopted the same look at the exact same moment.

Rogue One did an excellent job of looking cutting edge while being true to the look of A New Hope. I’m hoping Discovery will evolve in the right direction visually, and in terms of bridge sounds, and resist the touch screens and other more current touches seen in the Kelvin universe. Knobs and buttons and switches are essential.

At the same time that I want to seem them achieve the right look ultimately, t I think we should cut them a little slack (not a lot) to be fair. There are differences between the look of the ship in certain TOS episodes – like when a food replicator magically appeared in the transporter room that had never been there before (and was never there again) because it was needed for the plot of one episode, or like when Majel Barrett was one character in The Cage and another character for the whole rest of the series.

I mentioned Rogue One because I’m hoping Discovery can evolve to the point where the visual match of the two shows is as good as the visual match of those two Star Wars films.

With all due respect, it’ll never happen–the Trek universe can’t be as visually cohesive as that of STAR WARS, for any number of reasons. I’d still never trade franchises, though. :-)

I’m sorry, but you need to be more realistic. It’s 2017 and we are getting rid of buttons and switches. Discovery takes place in the 2250s. Do the math.

Yes, but our space ships and stations still use very primitive computer systems because they are guaranteed not to have system crashes. Systems that run customisable touch screens could crash, while knobs, buttons and switches won’t.

They are 3 years Into that Period.

Says Who- those Original Uniforms are too Star Trekky & They don’t want this to be Star Trek.

Because it’s supposed to be in the Prime universe and doesn’t look a thing like the 2250s aesthetic already canon to that time period.

There was some bad photoshopping going on in some of those pictures. But they were appreciated, nonetheless.

I really like the cadet badge for some reason.

Funny, that is my least favorite design element. Maybe it will grow on me.

Wondering if the three stripes mean she’s one year away from graduation [three out of four].

Thats the word. The stripes indicate years.

Lt. Tyler = Hottie. Damn. Is he the gay character? Please, please say yes ;) I wish Sarek’s ears were more like the original with the small curve around before the point. Is it really only 2.5 weeks until the premiere????!!!! #Amped

No. That would be Stamets and he’s spoken for by the ship’s doctor (not pictured).

The ship’s doctor is played by Wilson Cruz, Luke. So, we have that to look forward to, at least. :D

Heheh I think Lt. Tyler is going to be SQUEEE! for some fanboys and fangirls.

Ugh

What’s “ugh” for?

@Luke – I agree. Sarek’s ears look odd…

“Steven? It’s Clem Fandango, can you hear me?”

Can’t help but think that the ridiculous amount of detail for the sake of detail on many of the uniforms and sets, especially the Klingon ones (some would call it “clutter”), probably for the purpose of pushing 4K, will one day be looked at in the same way as the extreme colorfulness of TOS for the sake of pushing color TVs!

A lot of that detail will be noticeable if they release a 4K/HDR disc set. People with widescreen 4K TVs will appreciate that extra amount of detail. And don’t forget the sound format – a series like Star Trek begs for good sound too (Dolby Atmos or DTS-MA).

Oh sure. My point was that same as with the excessive color on TOS (I’m sure early color tv owners appreciated it!), even though you CAN have alot of detail in everything doesn’t mean you HAVE to – sometimes it doesn’t make sense or seems gratituous, like with the tiny 3d-printed delta pattern in the uniforms.

Nice. It’s definitely got a cinematic look – the uniforms are a believable evolution from the Franklin/Enterprise era and the Kelvin 2230s… touches of Forbidden Planet there, too. The Klingon ship and costumes look like a baroque opera set, and we know the Klingons are all about that big, widescreen dynastic drama. If nothing else it’ll be really gorgeous to look at.

What touches of FB do you see? That would be pretty awesome, if true.

Really, really like that shot of Isaacs on the Discovery bridge.

Shouldn’t Saru be a doctor? It makes sense if he can sniff out death. I bet he could save a lot of lives that way.

Probably couldn’t get his horse feet into the scrubs.

Think what a depressing bedside manner he might have … perhaps his people can’t be doctors because of a poor success rate ;^)

Good point. Pessimists.

Looks like cadet Tilly is using switches & control knobs!!

This is going to be awesome because we’re going back to super-serious, professional Starfleet. None of that immature teenagers-in-space, guardians of the galaxy lightheartedness crap of the JJ verse. Good riddance JJverse!

That’s certainly my hope, but we’ll have to see.

Super-serious professional Starfleet!
Gosh … OMG … too much thinking for my popcorn-addled brain!!

Signed, A Fan of BOTH Trek Timelines

And frankly, “super-serious professional” sounds totally humorless, and TOS was NOT humorless.

I agree with the poster. Too much of JJ’s fictional universe seemed unprofessional and illogical. Kirk going from cadet to captain being the most obvious but there were others. Pike was excellent though.

Bruce Greenwood is always awesome. He deserved a better movie.

On Trek, that trend of amateurism was actually started by “Enterprise”. TPTB thought it was actually a good idea and creating “relatability to contemporary audiences” to show the supposed best and brightest of Earth fooling around in space and sealing compression leaks with mashed potato… and Archer was the fittingly clueless head of amateur hour.
Fortunately, audiences are not as stupid as presumed and in broader science fiction this trend has been reversing for several years already, with notable, serious hard science fiction like “Interstellar” or “Gravity”. If only Trek could reach such heights!

Hmm, yeah… those are some nice images! Gets me more excited about the show. The level of detail is at or above the recent movies. I hope that attention to detail is happening with the scripts and character development too. It’d be interesting to see the uniforms make subtle changes over time as well, perhaps a cool/tailored version of Cage-era, but with more details/interesting seam-lines and fabrics, etc? (You have to admit the first pilot with Jeffrey Hunter had low-end tunics with sloppy-loose tailoring going on). The phasers on this show pretty-much hit the bulls-eye! So, if Captain Pike was 13 years before Kirk, and Discovery is 10 years before Kirk — these phaser designs hit the mark between Cage-era phasers and TOS-era. Nice.

It’s interesting yet puzzling that the new communicator antenna lid looks just like the ones from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan instead of TOS. I guess Starfleet went retro in TWOK — and none of of even new it! lol

TWOK communicator was an abomination. Maybe they were for special use for certain Away missions….or hiding Altoids.

I’d have preferred the original antenna grill myself, but it’s still a pretty awesome prop.

It looks more like a sequel to Enterprise than a prequel to TOS, if that makes sense. And I can live with that. Just tell a good story and I’ll watch.

I always thought that Enterprise felt more like a prequel to TNG than TOS, but I get your point.

You’re right, Enterprise did have that TNG feel. I was thinking about the look. Hopefully DISCO will have more of the verve associated with TOS.

The lack of a curve in Sarek’s ear is disappointing. That’s the difference between the Vulcan and elf ear.

He belongs in the circus, not a starship. Right next to the dog-faced boy.

@ gingerly and others that brought the look of the ears up – it’s yet ANOTHER detail that helps me view this show as merely being set in an ‘alternative universe’. ;)

Yesterday, I watched the worst movie I have ever seen. 1990’s “Syngenor”… Horrible, horrible genre rip-off. But I’m not talking about the movie’s lack of quality. The “Syngenor”, a genntically enhanced super soldier reminded me a lot about T’Kuvma and those new Klingons…Coincidence?

Love the phaser; some things do withstand the test of time.

And Stamets’ communicator cover looks like a dead ringer form the TWOK communicators in that picture.

I know I should know this James Frain dude from somewhere, but I can’t place him. That notwithstanding, I’m not sure I’m buying him as Sarek yet. I’m sure I’ll warm up to him.

True Blood? Gotham? Orphan Black? He’s played lots of recurring characters in genre TV over the past decade or so, mostly villains. If none of those ring a bell for you, IMDb is your friend.

Gotham! That’s it! Thanks. I guess I was too lazy to check IMDB. :)

Dumpster fire

Looks like Saru is a Lt. Cmdr.

What are you people ON?

The Klingon uniforms though a bit OTT are beautiful but the Space Track Suit Uniforms are Hidious, not Cannon, Look Uncomfortable The Crocked one sided flap collar & too tight (comments from the actors)
You can’t tell rank from a distance- the Rank going all the way down the legs like an Adidas tracksuit & that part where they try to continue the pattern onto the pants pocket area, looks bad- will never line up- either do a seperate jacket/top or a one piece.

The original Uniforms were so simple & comfortable & relatable & the JJ updates were great & it’s so embarrassing to see these actors running around in there little space cadet space track suits.
