‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Episode Titles For The Rest Of 2017 Revealed

In a tweet this morning, CBS revealed the titles for episodes 5 through 9 of Star Trek: Discovery, which take us up to the season hiatus in November. A couple of these were previously revealed, but episodes 7 through 9 are new.

Episode Titles

Episode 5:  “Choose Your Pain” (coming this Sunday, October 15)

While reminiscent of Sybok’s Star Trek V catchphrase “share your pain,” the title likely refers to pain inflicted by the Klingons through torture as the episode will deal with Captain Lorca who gets captured.

Episode 6: “Lethe” (October 22)

Lethe is the river of forgetfulness in underworld of Hades in Greek mythology. Lethe can also mean “oblivion.”

Episode 7:  “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” (October 29)

Continuing the Greek theme, this title is part of a line from The Iliad by Homer. “…There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest man go mad.”

Episode 8: “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” (November 5)

Switching to Latin, this old adage translates as “If you want peace, prepare for war.” The adage is used as the motto for a number of military units around the world, as well as professional wrestler Triple H.

Episode 9″ “Into the Forest I Go” (November 12)

This title is likely from author and naturalist John Muir’s writing: “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.”

Following episode 9 Discovery will go on hiatus until January 2018 when the rest of the 15-episode first season will pick up again with episode 10.

Episode 5 preview

CBS has also released a preview for episode 5 (the same one shown on CBS All Access following episode 4 on Sunday)

Star Trek: Discovery is available exclusive in the US on CBS All Access with new episodes released Sundays at 8:30 pm ET. In Canada Star Trek: Discovery airs on the Space Channel at the same time. Discovery is available on Netflix outside the USA and Canada with new episodes made available Monday at 8 am BST.

Keep up with all the Star Trek: Discovery news at TrekMovie.

I couldn’t help but notice your pain…

It runs deep… All the way to deck 78

Not that deep then, Deck 78 is right at the top of the turbo shaft… 😏

Which Deck 78?

Kirk: Damn it, Bones, you’re a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can’t be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They’re the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don’t want my pain taken away! I need my pain!

Great titles

Nice shout-out to John Muir. Classy.

Nice titles, but I’d be more interested in knowing who the writers are. Wonder when Nick Meyer’s episode is coming up?

I think I remember hearing he didn’t have an episode, but was a consultant on the show. Could be wrong.

Nick Meyer wrote a draft of episode two, but apparently it was rejected and rewritten.

Where did you read this?

Rejected and rewritten are two different things, TV episodes frequently pass through several writers hands. That doesn’t mean that earlier drafts were rejected. Just not finished.

I’m curious if Meyer has an episode, as well as Joe Menosky.

He was just there for PR to look like they were going to do Real Star Trek. They havent.

Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mudd

I was thinking that the title is likely a Mudd-heavy episode.

I’m betting it’s going to be an episode where L’Rell manipulates Voq’s feelings to get him to do something for her and her house, that he probably wouldn’t do on his own.

Are we going to get this region locked shit on everything that shuts out the vast majority of viewers for 7 years?

Here… stop panicking… it’s on youtube..

Give a man a fish and they eat for a day. Teach a man a fish and they eat for a lifetime.

Build a man a fire and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he’ll be warm the rest of his life!

Give a man a targ and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to stalk it and gore it with his own Bat’leth and he’ll dine on honor for a lifetime.

Give a man a fish and he eats a meal. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

lol. “vast majority of viewers”

I’m waiting for you to quantify that statement with verifiable facts.

I suppose they meant that there’s more people outside the US collectively than in it?

@CaptJWAmick,

CBS All Access (US Only) = 1.5-2.0 million subscribers.

Netflix (Outside North America) = 50 million subscribers.

The majority of ‘Discovery’ viewers are located outside the United States, therefore OP’s comment is accurate that region-locking is shutting out the majority of viewers.

Its funny how Americans still think they are the center of the world.

“Choose your pain” sounds more like Pinhead from Hellraiser….

Alternative titles…

A Taste of Mushrooms.

Bear in the Fold.

Bread and Mushrooms.

The Savage Bear.

The Bear Trap.

The Bear Trap! LMAO

I have to say these titles are vastly better than the first one “The Vulcan Hello”, which was a tonal rift with 50 years of Star Trek and depiction of Vulcans in favor of the “cool”, informal, low brow speech of the Kelvin movies (with villains conversing with the captain on a first name basis). Vulcan’s don’t say hello, they greet, period. The correct title therefore should have been “The Vulcan Greeting”, which would have been nicely in line with the above mentioned sophisticated titles from Greek and Roman lore.

I thought a lot of the early criticisms I read of that title were pretty overwrought. Still, you make a pretty good point. “Greeting” would have been better, yes.

Nah, nah, nah. The Vulcan hello was fine. Burnham was adapting her speech to the people around her – humans. Just as violence is a language Klingons understand, so is casual vernacular with humans.

Okay, you both have good points! :-)

Curious that the episode titles don’t appear in the episodes themselves …

I guess they don’t feel the need to superimpose the titles on the opening credits or beginning of the first act as these shows are exclusively being played from online catalogues that have the titles displayed in the episode listings…

It was already a dying tradition when ENT premiered.

I would have liked on-screen titles, and they’d fit perfectly when they change the text on the opening titles each episode.

I miss that, and Captain’s Log entries.

Burnham had one in the pilot. Since the series is told from her POV we might not see one again unless/until she’s officially part of Starfleet again.

Obviously the big question on everyone’s mind is when and how Sybok will become part of “Discovery.” ;-)

Can’t wait for the Mirror Universe Episodes and there will be Multiple episodes.

Sadly this Weinstein mess touches Star Trek as Mia Kirshner has come out to derail harassment at his hands.
