This morning the Television Academy announced its nominations for the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards, and Star Trek: Picard picked up five of them for its first season. Short Treks also picked up an important nomination.
CBS had run a campaign promoting the work of Picard star Patrick Stewart along with other members of the creative team, but all five nominations were in the technical “Creative Arts” categories, which is typical for a Star Trek show. CBS was successful in garnering a short-form series nomination for Star Trek: Short Treks.
With five nods, Picard is now the most successful of the CBS All Access Star Trek series when it comes to Emmy nominations. Last year Star Trek: Discovery picked up four nominations, and it had two in 2018. The total of six nominations is the best showing for the franchise since 2001 when Star Trek: Voyager picked up 8 nominations for its final season.

Mandalorian gets nominated for best drama? wow… i mean it was perfectly ok but dammit jim that’s ridiculous. The stew man definitely deserved a nod but there are so many good shows right now. even tng in it’s heyday didn’t get acting writing or directing or anything. same with ds9. tng got a thanks for coming best series nod in it’s final season at least. it’s funny when you go over the emmy trek list… man they apparently really excel at sound editing… the voters love star trek sound editing. we should all be proud
Enjoyed the Mandalorian, but didn’t think it was amazing. I have a feeling its best days are ahead of it.
I thought Picard started well, but deteriorated, and ended with one of the worst hours of Trek in its entire history. Many of my Trekkie friends didn’t even get half way through. Next Gen and DS9’s first couple of series weren’t great though, so many they’ll get a better writing team in.
My thoughts on the Mandalorian are exactly the same thing. Mandalorian has a lot on its plate. So much potential and growth.
that’s not true… picard started great… middle was awesome… i was disappointed in the wrap up being so quick but the ending was amazing with data… all my friends loved it.

I thought the scene with Picard and Data was worth the price of the whole season.
For me the Data scene came from nowhere, and felt tacked-on, as did Picard’s “death”, which I doubt anyone bought for a moment, because Sirpat had been publicly inviting old cast members on for the second series before this one even started broadcast. They spunked these huge moments up the wall, and they felt meaningless. The series was all over the place.
Trying to be positive: The music was good.
Big time Picard started great but no it wasn’t. In TNG picard was a respected no mess kind of guy, who only at the very end decided to play poker with the main crew. Also hates the Borg for assimilating him but is totally fine being turning into a robot. It has nothing in common TNG except a few cameos.
Yeah, the characters of Picard and Seven were nothing like the people we knew. I’d accept that in 20 years people can change, but they were fully-matured adults back then, not children.
The Romulan evacuation was a crap idea. Why would the sprawling empire depend on their enemies to evacuate one planet? It would be like China expecting the US to evacuate Hong Kong.
The show was a generic space adventure. I really wish they’d put in a good writing team.
tom riker I’m surprised to see Mandalorian nominated as well. Star Trek needs to do more in order to be in the big leagues. It was perfectly okay and is fun but also ridiculous. Maybe makeup or visual effects.

I agree. I loved the quasi-episodic nature of the show, the visual effects, and virtually all of the supporting and lead performances. Werner Herzog, Carl Weathers, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, and Gina Carano were all spectacular, and Pedro Pascal did tons of great work without being able to show his face. All that physical acting is not easy to do. As well, the stories were so varied with their genre influences, everything from Fistful of Dollars to Outlaw Josey Wales to Oceans Eleven. And yet it oozed Star Wars with all the set and creature design, etc. I seriously cannot wait for season two.
By direct comparison I’d put it ahead of both Picard and Discovery, even though I’m a huge fan of both of those shows. A friend of mine who also liked both of the most recent Trek shows remarked to me that he felt Patrick Stewart was the worst actor in Picard, essentially playing himself for most of the season. I tend to agree.
I felt as though Mandalorian hit virtually every mark, while Discovery and Picard both stumbled a bit more, even though all three are pretty great shows. Short Treks has mostly been a lot of fun, and like Mandalorian so far-reaching in its style and tone from one episode to the next. I certainly hope they keep making more mini-seasons of those.
LOL! Mandalorian is an excellent show that the current Trek showrunners could learn a thing or two from, especially how it manages to juggle largely standalone stories within the framework of an overarching narrative. The writing is tight and focused, the show is mercifully free of the cringe inducing bad acting that plagues so much of the new Trek shows and it doesn’t wallow in gratuitous gore or needless profanity. It’s also far truer to the tone and spirit of its source material than anything Kurtzmann and company have ever put forth.
None of the nu-Trek shows are even remotely deserving of any consideration when it comes to acting or especially writing as the shows are rife with sloppy storytelling, full of subplots that go nowhere, characters that serve no purpose and improbable magic box solutions like the nonsensical magic Ocarina.
Nailed it!! NuTrek is crammed with lousy acting and writing, it reeks. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Mandalorian, and unlike Trek it knows how to appeal to the zeitgeist by creating the utterly memeable Baby Yoda.
I detect a lot of sour grapes on this talkback. Mandalorian is a fairly simple, visual show, almost a live-action cartoon or graphic novel (which probably best explains Dave Filoni’s involvement). But it is extremely well written, cast and directed for what it is. It is stronger than anything to come out of ST following the first Kelvin movie (with the possible exception of maybe one or two Short Treks).
Dave Filoni is the king of Star Wars canon. He knows his street knowledge of the force.
Mandalorian is so good. Best of Star Wars since the original trilogy. You should see it for yourself.

Were I in Secret Hideout senior management, I would sincerely sit down with the core team and take the lesson from this. It’s not just non-Trek bias in the Emmy nomination voters.
The prosthetic makeup nomination is for a different episode so it’s not for the eyeball as suggested by the original poster.
I agree with you that management at Secret Hideout and CBS will probably not be too thrilled about the turnout. I mean, any nomination is a nice recognition for the teams that are nominated but these categories aren’t exactly something that reflects back positively on the whole show.
Go back and look at the Emmy nominations for pretty much any of the Trek shows. rarely if ever do they get anything other than the technical/art stuff even nominated.
I’m aware that Trek has never been very successful in the major categories. However, the current shows are trying to be part of peak TV so the ambition is higher than when they were churning out 50 episodes per year in the 90s. But I’m sure producers were hoping for more back then, too.
A lot has changed since the days of TNG. Take a quick look at winners in the acting categories over the past few years and you will see that the sci-fi and fantasy genres have been represented more frequently in the past few years.
The Trek shows were passed over for the more meaningful awards because, quite frankly, they were not good enough. They couldn’t even muster a best visual effects nomination.
Best Visual effects? Forgive me for being blunt but Picard had Vfx and ship shots that looked like they were made in the mid 2000s and I think many people are not forgiving them for the copy-paste job they did in the finale.
Picard also used stock/generic VFX shots which anyone can buy for a handful of sequences so…
That was my point, the visual effects, like so much else in the show were mediocre and not deserving of recognition.
Can we acknowledge that Frakes directed that episode (and also some of the badder episodes of Discovery).
Short Treks might actually win.
Short Treks is where they are innovating.
Even if season 2 was uneven, it was pushing the envelope and is worthy of a nod.
I do hope that Short Treks joins TAS with a series level win.

Stewart really deserved it for 1992’s The Inner Light. Strangely, Christopher Lloyd won the Emmy that year for a Canadian TV show (“Road to Avonlea”). Scott Bakula was nominated for Quantum Leap that year. Stewart wasn’t even nominated, which is outrageous.

Hey, he’s young and enthusiastic. Not gonna punish him for that, the fan base needs that.
The fanbase, like all things, needs clarity. He says one thing, then says something completely opposite moments later. He may as well be saying nothing, more often than not. Enthusiasm is awesome, but when it can’t be trusted, what good is it?
I read virtually everything here as opinion pieces. Some folks suffer from a raging case of paralysis of analysis, others just react to everything. Trek is a creative endeavor, any given effort is likely to speak to me differently then it would to someone else, and that’s okay. To paraphrase Lily Slone a bit, yeah, I’d expect comments to make sense. If they don’t, there’s little harm in sharing someone’s enthusiasm.
Hoping for a Short Treks surprise win at the Emmys.
Picard had a strong start but slowly deteriorated and burned itself out in the end. The Picard finale was a incoherent mess.
Hopefully season 2 can fix those mistake and grow on its own.

I think Short Trek deserves the win and should win in normal circumstances. It is a good idea that is executed quite well. Were they really expecting any serious acting nominations though? I mean this is the Emmy’s we are talking about. Us Trekkies and the mainstream unfortunately have different viewpoints on Trek so getting an acting nominations was always gonna be wishful thinking. If they can improve Picard a bit more and listen to some of the more sensible criticisms I think the upcoming seasons might have a better chance of getting some more awards, but again I don’t think we should keep our hopes up. I also don’t get all the negativity here for The Mandalorian. I mean both franchises can and should be respectful of each other.

I think if they want Picard nominated for acting they should write some compelling scenes for the actors to act in…because what I saw was an embarrassment for almost all the actors, especially Sir Pat..wasn’t a fan of Jeri either. Maybe it’s the characters as written, but it had acting worse than Disco.

Well, Picard has got what it deserves: nominations in make up and sound mixing rather than writing or performances in front of the camera.
It was mediocre sci fi at best and poor to very poor Star Trek. I love Sir Patrick and he can only work with the script provided to him, but he wasn’t at his best here (anyone who disagrees, please think of TNG: Sarek or TNG: The Chains of Command before getting back to me 🖖).

Very well put and my feelings exactly. Honestly could not make it past 4 episodes. Even bad TNG is more watchable than Picard, which is a sad thing to say. Looking forward to Strange New Worlds, and hopefully back to good episodic storytelling.
I wish Trek was crafted with the love and quality Mandalorian is. Everything from the visuals, editing and theme tune, to story-telling and pacing, made by people who care about Star Wars and who respect the legacy. New Trek does none of that.
Exactly, I mean even creating the baby Yoda as a model instead of full CGI shows the care and effort put into the making the show. They could have easily went the cheaper CGI options but they wanted to have a real, physical model to interact with. Also Mandalorian had some interesting and unusual guest stars, I mean getting Werner Herzog as a guest star, or Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito.
How baby Yoda was put together was so interesting. It’s basically a puppet not CGI.
The Mandalorian was a valentine to Star Wars. Every frame of that show felt as if it was crafted by fans of the franchise who had a thorough understanding of it.
It even improves upon some of the ideas in the original trilogy. But it also works as a standalone show.
At it’s core, though, it’s a solid, good old fashioned Western.
The Mandalorian was a love letter to Star Wars. The show was made by fans for the fans. Baby Yoda is so cute and adorable. They really care about Star Wars and I appreciate it.

Picard was very boring and the plot made no sense. It did not feel like Trek. I cancelled my All Access subscription because of it. I would rather see a Trek show based on Pike.
Unlike Picard or Discovery, The Mandalorian respects its origins, and stays faithful to the core whilst offering something new and keeps you hooked and coming back for more. It doesn’t feel the need to be ‘edgy’ by suddenly throwing in F-bombs out of nowhere, or gratuitous gore in an utterly lame and immature attempt to be more ‘adult’, but really just added as a cynical way to generate gossip and attention… Nothing clever about that at all. It respects the fact Star Wars is for everyone, every age group and doesn’t wrestle it away from the younger fans, yet nor does it insult the grown-ups who want to watch and get immersed in the world either. It tells solid stories each week, it’s economical with the telling – no flab – and isn’t a meandering mess trying oh so very hard to be ‘intelligent sci-fi’. It knows what it is and is proud of that. IT’S FUN! Picard and Discovery almost seem embarrassed by the optimism and light of prior Trek… they’re vague echoes of greatness thrown into a blender with no real feel for the heart and soul of the franchise. But they look terrific due to modern day effects and sets and filming and handsome budgets. Some are taken in by that surface veneer, but strip it away and there’s very little to get enthused by. It almost all feels like the mirror universe still… It is my fervent hope Trek gets a new overseer who actually understands and LOVES the previous shows, and far better and tighter writers, as all the pieces are otherwise in place with superb casting and crews and composers. Strange New Worlds is the last chance I’m going to give NuTrek, it’s on life support at the moment…..
