All Access Podcast Connects The Dots Between The Star Trek Universe On TV And The Next Star Trek Movie

All Access Star Trek episode 37 - TrekMovie podcast

This week Tony is joined by Shuttle Pod’s Matt Wright, stepping in for a busy Laurie. The podcasters talk about the news of the Star Trek week including Discovery’s GLAAD Award and Season 3 soundtrack and Blu-ray releases. We also cover Gates McFadden’s new podcast and how LeVar Burton really wants to be the new Jeopardy! host.

The rest of the pod focuses on all the latest Star Trek Universe TV news including Star Trek: Prodigy and how it is apparently a big deal with ViacomCBS, how Q fits in with season two of Star Trek: Picard, and how Strange New Worlds is shaping up to be a TOS nostalgia machine. We finish with a dive into what we know (and think is true) about the new Star Trek movie Paramount has scheduled for June 2023… and we try to tie all of this together with a little help from Alex Kurtzman’s latest comments about the state of things.

I think Prodigy is coming sooner than you think. For the audience they’re targeting, the Nickelodeon debut is way more important than Paramount+. If the show comes out on Paramount+ before Lower Decks as a “preview” for fans, it will build interest ahead of a possible fall premiere on Nickelodeon. That way, toys could be out in time for the all-important Christmas shopping season.

A fall Nickelodeon premiere would also explain the lack of a trailer. They could be holding it for May upfronts.

agreed.
Also back in March, there was a leak of the Nickelodeon schedule for the summer and Prodigy was mentioned to arrive on Nickelodeon in August:

And if it comes to Paramount+ first…

We checked on that. It was a guess from fansite, not a leak. The only official thing that’s been said so far is the president of Nickelodeon said the show will show up on Nickelodeon at the end of the year. That implies it will wrap up before the end of the year on Paramount±.

Before first contact day we were assuming Prodigy would proceed Lower Decks. But they gave lower decks a date and a trailer.

That was just a fan deduction, not a leak.

I can see Katee Sackhoff in Trek. She could be a new captain with a new crew or she could be Captain Garrett of the Enterprise C.

Great idea!

I agree this would be awesome. I’m imagining first contact with the Cardassians and the Ferengi. Hopefully they dedicate a season to each and do it right.

Great discussion! Maybe you could comment further on one topic you mentioned, namely Picard’s current nature? Is he not still a thoroughly organic being without mechanical or electronic components like Data? In which case, he has an organic brain, not a positronic one. It’s just his body was artificially produced, like a clone, into which his mentation has been transferred. Therefore, I’m not sure there’s that much of an adaptation issue for him to work through. Your thoughts? (I think Data should always been called a robot.)

So a couple of thoughts. It’s never really clear what the Golem is. In a deleted scene, Altan Soong says he had originally planned to transfer himself into it, so he could survive the forthcoming evil artificial life forms that were going to purge all biological life. So that kind of implies it’s not just cloned/grown human tissue. If the Golem was effectively just another meatbag, he would be killed anyway, no?

I also think there still would be some adapting to even a biological new body, like Culber went through when his body was reformed fresh from the mycelial network.

Thanks! I take your point about Culber. But that deleted line is curious. Perhaps it was deleted because the producers didn’t want Picard to end up with a positronic brain. This means that Picard/Golem is not an “android” of the same type as Soji, who was fashioned from a positronic neuron from Data or B4. On the other hand, the Golem apparently could have been equipped with “superpowers” (and wouldn’t there have been two of them if the result of fractal neuronic cloning?). It all seems confused and inconsistent. Oh, well. Thanks again!

That’s a good shout about a S31 mini-series. As quite a bit of time has passed since the idea for the show was originally announced, and as it may be even longer again before it ever goes into production, a short ‘sample’ of what could be might be the best way to gauge interest.

Seems a sensible way of testing the market to see whether there is still any appetite for it, or whether fans have since moved on from the idea.
