The next two shows coming from the Star Trek Universe are the live-action Strange New Worlds and the kids animated series Prodigy. Both will debut exclusively in the USA on Paramount+ and today we learned where Canadian fans can find these new shows.
CTV Sci-Fi adds two more Star Trek shows
CTV Sci-Fi Channel is the Canadian home to Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. So it comes as no big surprise that the channel will feature the next two shows in the franchise and today Canada’s Bell Media made it official, announcing both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy will be added to the lineup.
The announcement was made ahead of Bell’s Upfront event a week from today, announcing their 2021/2022 line-up of shows for CTV and their specialty channels like CTV Sci-Fi. No dates were provided for the premiers of either Star Trek show, but it is likely they will arrive at the same time as their USA premieres. Paramount+ has confirmed that Prodigy will debut on the streaming service this year. With Lower Decks arriving on August 12th and Discovery’s fourth season coming later this year, Strange New Worlds is expected to arrive in 2022.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new live-action series set on the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike, set in the decade before James T. Kirk took command. It stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike, with Ethan Peck as Mr. Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their performances from Star Trek: Discovery and Short Treks. All three characters first appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series and the new show is being developed to hearken back to the style and tone of the original Star Trek, with an episodic structure.
Star Trek: Prodigy is a new animated series aimed at kids, originally developed for Nickelodeon, which will now air the show after the first season concludes on Paramount+. The series follows a “motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future.” The show is set in the Delta Quadrant in the year 2383, five years after Star Trek: Voyager. The show’s premise follows these alien kids after they commandeer a derelict Starfleet ship, where they are guided by the “Emergency Training Hologram” modeled after Captain Janeway, with Kate Mulgrew returning to voice the role she originated on Voyager.
While not mentioned in today’s announcement, it is likely both Strange New Worlds and Prodigy will also be available on Crave, Bell Media’s streaming service, which is also home to Discovery, Lower Decks, and Picard.
There is no word yet on where fans outside of the USA and Canada will be able to see Strange New Worlds or Prodigy. Currently, Discovery is available on Netflix, with Amazon Prime Video carrying Lower Decks internationally.
