‘Star Trek: Discovery’ And ‘Lower Decks’ Nominated For 5 Emmys

This morning the Television Academy announced its nominations for the 73nd Annual Emmy Awards, and Star Trek: Discovery picked up four of them with Lower Decks nominated for one.

Star Trek shows nominated for 5 Emmys

For its third season Star Trek: Discovery was nominated in four categories:

• Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
• Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
• Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour)
• Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode

And for its first season the Star Trek: Lower Decks picked up one nomination:

• Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And

Paramount+ had campaigned for more high-profile Emmys, however, all of Trek nominations are in the Creative Arts categories, which is typical for the franchise. Jeff Russo’s season three score did pick up some industry buzz, but he ended up being nominated for Fargo and not Discovery. Almost all of the nominations picked up by Paramount+ were for the Star Trek shows, with only a single other nomination.

Discovery has been nominated in the same categories before, with four total nominations in season two and two in season one. Last year Star Trek: Picard was nominated for five Emmys, and Short Treks was nominated as well. Other genre shows brought in more nominations, including The Mandalorian which tied The Crown for the top spot with a total of 24, followed closely by WandaVision with 23, The Handmaid’s Tale with 21, and Lovecraft Country with 18.

For Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Discovery is nominated for the episode “Terra Firma, Part 2.” Discovery is going up against episodes from Halston, The Queen’s Gambit, Ratched, and WandaVision.
