All Access Drinks In All The Star Trek Day News And Toasts “An Embarrassment of Dooplers”

All Access Star Trek episode 56 - TrekMovie

[Lower Decks review starts at 59:27]

Tony was doing interviews on the red carpet on Star Trek Day while Laurie was watching the livestream, so they compare notes, covering the event as a whole, plus Alex Kurtzman’s new plans for the next Star Trek show. Then they go over all the new trailers, release dates, and news from the panels on Prodigy, Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks, discussing new characters, season storylines, and more. And after that, they review episode 205 of Lower Decks, “An Embarrassment of Dooplers,” which they both enjoyed a great deal.

My theory is that the Michelle Yeoh series has been changed to a movie—specifically the Kalinda Vazquez movie announced a few months ago—and it will be direct-to-streaming.

Interesting! I don’t think it will be direct-to-streaming, but it WOULD make sense to put Yeoh in it, especially if they want a global audience. She’s a global star. The question is, can they do a story with her that will make sense for non-Star Trek fans? They are always trying to capture that audience, and I think her story needs a LOT of contexting. Intriguing idea to ponder…

I thought exactly the same thing. The debate was whether to leave the project as originally intended or make it a movie. This is why has been taking so long to decide what to do with Section 31.

I would love to see a movie interacting with a new crew, legacy characters, actors from all series would be fascinating.

I’d wondered the same, but the interviews that Yeoh has done about her experience on Discovery really underscore the value she places in the community that comes from doing television over a number of seasons.

So my working theory is that the Vasquez movie may be a bridging piece that has Georgiou visit the 23rd century Kelvin universe but the long term setting for the streaming series will be elsewhere. That is, the movie will be a vehicle to attract a broader audience to the streaming series.

Why don’t you consider getting the shuttle pod crew cover one of the shows when Prodigy and Discovery air at the same time?

The big questions I have about SNW are” Where is Dr. Boyce?” and “are they holding back announcing who will play him for a reason”?

Dr, Boyce was already in the verge of retirement in The Cage, so there is no expectation that he would stiibe on board.

This is several years AFTER The Cage. The character could just be retired or even killed. Either way my guess is they will reference him and explain his absence on the show if he’s not there at all. And he could still be there of course.

You guys didn’t mention Blu’s ‘Star Trek Day’ post on Instagram???

I looked… what is it you wanted us to comment about? Not sure what you are referring to.

Well, a blood-spattered Blu (surely make-up) giving a Vulcan salute with two ‘bloody’ fingers is a ‘tad’ out of the ordinary and worthy of comment, don’t you think? LOL.

If I had any insight to offer, I would offer it. But I do not. If you have thoughts on what it’s about, please share them!

I’ve been following her on Instagram for awhile. Blu is very much a ‘push the envelope’ kind of person, including many creative self portraits such as the one in question. So I don’t think she was ‘commenting’ on Trek by doing what she did (not certain, though) but it certainly was an attention grabber. Blu is likely going to be a very interesting presence in the Trek world for years to come.

Don’t disagree that Blu is an interesting person, and I think they’re an excellent actor. But we don’t generally bring up social posts unless we have something to say about them. (We brought up the one from Annie Wersching because of the implication that Jonathan Del Arco might turn up on Picard again.)

I’m can’t believe with all the Animated Series and The Cage references in Lower Decks that iTunes still doesn’t offer that series or the pilot episode. They have a box set of the original series advertised as “complete”, but it’s not because it’s missing The Cage. Thought they might have added it as a bonus feature on Disco: S2, but nope. How do we get these added for purchase? Especially TAS because on P+ the audio is all jacked up and the vocals are in one ear/speaker and the effects and music in the other.🙄

Here in Europe, on DVD zone 2, we had “the cage” on bonus of TOS Season one, and TAS was available as one box for both seasons

During the car race there were two sightings of Morn-looking people.

I had the same initial reservations as you Laurie when I heard so many TOS characters would be in Strange New Worlds. However the more I think of it the more it kinda makes sense. I can’t imagine once Pike’s five year mission is up the majority crew would have left the ship. It kinda makes it more realistic that this is the ship and crew before Kirk took command. Cosmetics aside.

About ST:Picard, I’m not surprised Picard ended up being a major player in altered universe. We have already seen through Shinzon that given the right environment and opportunity Picard can be really ruthless. Glad the Picard we know and love isn’t like that though. No one can deny season 2 has huge potential both good and bad.

This was a great episode. I know the bartender “remembers” Kirk and Spock being in her bar in the 2260’s but I think it would be better if it was the 2290’s after they both retired. We know from Picard that Starfleet can be very harsh when you become yesterday’s news 😝

I think it does make sense to have some carryover (re: SNW), but it does tread into tricky territory, like Uhura being more familiar with Spock’s past than Kirk. It’s a delicate dance for sure.

Thanks again for covering all the news and there was a lot to cover this week. The latest LDS was my favourite of the season so far and in my top 3 LDS episodes. A perfect blend of humour, action and nods to nostalgia; loved the Doomsday Machine hanging above the bar.

I’m also really looking forward to SNW and as that show develops, I wonder if you might be able to hold some interviews with the writers who presumably are treading a similar tightrope to LDS namely, doing there own thing while respecting cannon.

Voyager-D? I’m sure someone in the comments will clue me up but would it not be more like Voyager-A in this time period?

Hi Scott. We always want to talk with writers when we can.

Great Podcast!

I was very excited to have M’Benga as a doctor on SNW.

I watched Star Trek Day and the orchestra was the highlight for me. Hearing the themes live was beautiful. I love Russo’s work. My Star Trek Into Music playlist is mainly Russo and Giachinno.

What I love about LD, is they show us parts of starfleet we don’t see. I loved the starbase on the episode. I wandered what these stations look like inside and the merchandising of the big names like the D or ds9. I love the idea of capital ships and lesser ships. Luna class and above! Very aristocratic. Even the senior bridge crew taking credit for things lower deckers may have done. I love these small things that show us the bigger picture of starfleet. I love the view from the Lower Decks!

Totally agree about M’Benga, so memorable after only two episodes and worthy of being further developed. And yes, the orchestra was a huge highlight! Would’ve loved to have heard it live.

I think the reason Boimler is loosening up a bit is to distance himself from the “other” Boimler on the Titan. “That guy” is obviously a stickler for the rules, so “our Boimler” is intentionally relaxing to carve out a separate identity.
