For the second time this year, Saturday Night Live has returned to the final frontier for a Star Trek skit. This time it was all about billionaires in space, focusing on an actual Star Trek vet.
Space is awesome in “Billionaire Star Trek”
This summer saw billionaires Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos launch into space on rockets from their own companies. And for their season opener, NBC’s venerable sketch show Saturday Night Live was inspired by these space feats for the pre-filmed sketch “Billionaire Star Trek,” starring host Owen Wilson as Bezos in Star Trek: Ego Quest, the latest show from Paramount+
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is a Star Trek fan and has actually appeared in a cameo in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond, playing an alien Starfleet official on Yorktown Station.

It is hard to like any of those guys (Musk, Branson and Bezos in particular) but it is amazing that we are now watching SNL skits about rich people going into space. Twenty years ago the idea of rich guys building their own spacecraft would have been laughed at as ridiculous. Now we’re laughing at them being skewered on SNL.

More like a Star Trek character. Star Wars actually gave us such exotic names like “Tobias Beckett” (sounds like an accountant in Schenectady.)

I started skipping out on SNL last season. It has been bad for over a decade now but the last 5 or 6 years have been excruciatingly bad. I’ve mainly been watching it out of respect for what it once was. Started again this season hoping there would be some improvement. Not this episode. I feel it is only a matter of time before I decide to just stop watching. When the funniest part of the show was the WU tribute to Norm Macdonald… It just points out how good the show WAS and how bad it is now. What the show needs is a complete restart. I mean a 100% new cast and writing staff. It feels like it has been the same people for years.
They should do what they did at the end of the 1984-85 season and replace the entire cast. Though, that time, they actually asked the audience at the end of the season finale to vote on whether to fire the entire cast or not.
