‘Star Trek: Discovery’ And ‘Picard’ Pick Up 3 Saturn Awards

On Tuesday night, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror finally got around to handing out the 46th annual Saturn Awards, with nominees honoring the best in genre film and television announced in March. Star Trek went into the evening with a total of seven nominations and came away with three total awards for Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.

Discovery beats out Picard for Best Series

The third season of Star Trek: Discovery picked up the award for Best Science Fiction Television Series. It beat the first season of Picard along with Doctor Who, Lost in Space, Pandora, Raised by Wolves, and Westworld. Discovery has won a Best Series Saturn Award for each of its three seasons, although in previous years the Saturns separated streaming/new media shows from cable and network series.

Executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise was on hand at the Los Angeles ceremony, and she also offered her thanks on social media, showing off the statue.

Doug Jones and Patrick Stewart win for acting

Also winning for Discovery was Doug Jones, picking up the award for Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series. Jones beat competition from Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul), Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul), Michael Emerson (Evil), Richard Rankin (Outlander), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), and Luke Wilson (Stargirl). This was Jones’ third nomination and second win for his portrayal of Saru.

Jones was also at the event to pick up his award.

Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) was nominated for Best Actress on a Television Series, but lost to Caitriona Balfe (Outlander). Martin-Green has won the Saturn for her work in the first two seasons.

Sir Patrick Stewart came away a winner for his work on the first season of Star Trek: Picard, beating Henry Cavill (The Witcher), Mike Colter (Evil), Grant Gustin (The Flash), Sam Heughan (Outlander), Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country), and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul). This is Stewart’s third Saturn win (which includes one for Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Picard’s Isa Briones (Soji) was nominated for Best Performance by a Younger Actor on a Television Series, but the award went to Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), and Jeri Ryan (Seven) was nominated Best Guest Star Performance on Television, but the award went to Jon Cryer (Supergirl). Previously, Ryan won a Saturn for her final season as Seven on Voyager in 2001.

Matching franchise record

2021 is the fifth time in franchise history Star Trek has picked up three Saturn Awards. (The previous four trophy years were: 1977, 1997, 2018, and 2019.)

Doug Jones and Michelle Paradise showed off two of the awards on Instagram.

Congratulations are in order.

Interesting, I had wondered about when the Saturns would be awarded.

So many of the award ceremonies are still off their usual schedules due to COVID.

It’s interesting to see how well and consistently the Star Trek series do at the Saturns. It’s so different than the recognition at the Emmys.

The actors and shows are up against some very popular and high profile series on other streamers. It really suggests that the critics and guild members who don’t regularly work in scientific fiction and fantasy still have a very different idea of quality than those within the genre.

And the award goes to … Doug Jones for his portrayal of “Drum Major at an Awards Show”!

I’m happy for the Disco team, and it’s always lovely to see Sir Patrick Stewart get properly recognized for his work.

Awesome news, well earned. :)

Best series? 🤣🤣🤣🤦‍♂️ No please don’t encourage these writers to continue their lazy, cartoonish science and shock value ways. Instead, give it to the makeup artists and the wonderful actors, who unfortunately are given atrocious writing and dialogue to work with.

I have to agree, and had to read that twice to make sure I read it right. Plus, I watched Raised By Wolves and imo it was far and away better than any Trek show put out by Kutrzman & Co. But, to each their own.

Don’t you two get tired being wrong all the time?

Yeah I watched Raised by Wolves too and it was a fantastic and unique show. But man…that ending lol.

Will watch season 2 for sure though.

There really is no need to be so offensive and rude.

If only they won proper, more esteemed awards – Lower Decks should have won something as it is better than both shows (DIS & PIC) combined.

👏

Wow congratulations! Neither of these shows are my favorite by far but I’m happy to see them get recognized just the same. I want them to stay on and improve. And yeah, to see Trek in the 25th and 32nd centuries are fun so I hope both Picard and Discovery stay on for years to come…just hopefully better years.

Better Years? What Star Trek series have you been watching? I think there is a reason why ST: Discovery has won the Best SciFi TV Series (I think) the past three consecutive years/seasons.

It seems very odd to me that actors for Better Call Saul are considered for Saturn Awards. Maybe as a ‘fantasy’ show? Anyway, congratulations to Sir Patrick and Doug Jones, but Bob Odenkirk and especially Jonathan Banks operate on an entirely higher level. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I was wondering how that show ended up as a Saturn category, too.

I read the nominees in various categories last year and was wondering what their definitions were for for sci-if and fantasy. Because there were shows in there where all the mental gymnastics in the world couldn’t squeeze them into that category. So your point is well taken.

Congratulations to all the winners.

Congratulations to both, Discovery and Picard!

Some good productions get none, some get nominations. But I have strong feeling, in the next 1-2 years, they will double the amount of awards, for Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds.

The upcoming Kurtzman Star Trek shows look very promising! I am so looking forward to watch Prodigy and Strange New Worlds!

Congratulations, Doug Jones and Sir Patrick!

Congrats to both Discovery and Picard on their Saturn Awards wins.

Sorry the Saturns are a bit of a joke, not exactly too much competition in the sci-fi world right? And going by the pictures it looks like it’s being hosted in a hotel conference room. Tacky.

Wake me up when a Trek actor wins an Emmy…

Gotta love the Saturn awards. Trek will never get love at the Emmys but there is no shortage here.

I’m going to assume that The Expanse and For All Mankind didn’t meet the eligibility window because the nominees didn’t even come close to either of these series in quality.

100% – there’s far better sci-fi than current Trek (bar Lower Decks, which is the only show to feel Trek like since 2005)

This…. No nomination for the expanse…. Impossible.

Best series for discovery…. No way.

Wow, here’s to well-deserved wins for the very best in science fiction– Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Star Trek: Discovery. It was 20 years ago that JJ Abrams began mentoring the phenom Alex Kurtzman and now the apprentice has equaled the master– giving us the very best in science fiction as proven by these Saturn Awards. The Force will surely be with these two as they live long and prosper for decades and decades to come. Well done!

Wow…. If Star Trek Discovery won then one must wonder about how bad a year it was for sci-if…
