This week’s ramp-up promoting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues with a fourth character introduction video, following Tuesday’s videos for Cadet Uhura and Security Chief La’an and this morning’s video for Lt. Ortegas. The new video is all about a different kind of engineer.
Meet Hemmer… he is a genius
Joining Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) for the new series will be a collection of new and familiar characters onboard the USS Enterprise. Another new character is Hemmer, played by Bruce Horak. He is playing an Aenar engineer, and he is Star Trek’s first blind actor. A new social media video introduces Hemmer.

It looks like they’re paying homage to the TOS style engineering room with the long power transfer conduits (?) and all.
I dig.
Me too!
Me 3!
Yeah, it looks great!
I really like how they’ve done the sets and the ship for SNW. I recall how many folks complained online about the Enterprise in JJ Abrams ST films as being too far a departure from TOS. This version seems so much closer, a real fusion of the old and the new. Very nice job by the production designers. I honestly don’t think they could’ve done better!
This looks like it is going to be great can not wait to see more information coming out in the next few days/ weeks.
It’s going to be great.
Why do they always have to try and change the looks of aliens that we’ve already seen in other shows?
Let’s see, because they looked like crappy make-up jobs on the older shows and didn’t really look alien? Could that possibly be it?
LOL
I think Enterprise did a great job with them.
Rather it weill be because they want to show how makeup and prosthetics have progressed and what they are capable of doing nowadays. Also, they might just want to have a different aesthetic involved.
So I don’t think its because the previous aliens looked crappy.
Yeah, bring back the smooth-skin and gold lamé Klingons. 🙄 He looks fine.
The best Andorian update was what they did on Enterprise. I promise you, they can’t do better than that. Especially if what we saw on Star Trek Discovery is any indication.
They’ve been doing this since The Motion Picture. It’s nothing new.
They’ve been doing it since TOS. The Klingons changed from one episode to the next.
Yeah, it was actually a topic of discussion among Trekkies in the 70’s. They even made up fanon to explain it. (The Klingons Errand of Mercy are very Asian-looking. The ones of The Trouble With Tribbles are simply white people with goatees. And the ones of The Day of the Dove have this bronze color. And in each case it’s *all* the Klingons, so you can’t say “different races” unless their crews are racially segregated. Anyway, there were a pair of fan stories in the 70’s in which the actors switch universes with their characters. Shatner sees two types of Klingons on the Klingon bridge and goes, “Well, that explains that.”) And then TMP came along and everyone forgot about it.
He’s not an Andorian. He’s an Aenar, which is a related but slightly different species first appearing in Star Trek Enterprise.
Yeah, I miss the days when Klingons were portrayed by white actors in blackface.
I WANT MY STRANGE NEW WORLDS!!
Me too! :)
Me 3!
[sarcasm] Pfft, Their Delta insignias aren’t stickers on their shirts like the ones in The Original Series. They’ve already off to a terrible start…[/sarcasm]
Perhaps Kirk really likes stickers and institutes a sticker only policy when he becomes Captain.
This guy looks like he’s going to be a lot of fun! He seems to be the Odo or Phlox of this crew but only with a Starfleet uniform on.
Well said!
Hemmer looks cool. Give us a live-action Arex too please.
Something tells me that as much as I would geek out to see it I’m thinking it would be a difficult thing to pull off live.
Perhaps it would be as a regular character. They could have him guest for an episode or two. I would be happy with a cameo.
CGI can work wonders at least. And to my non-expert mind it doesn’t even sound like a big deal, especially if he doesn’t use the middle arm too much.
Hemmer has the most interesting promo. I’m looking forward to getting to know him.
The Aenar were presented as SUPER pacifists. I’m wondering how he found himself in the Star Fleet. Hoping his antenna move…
It probably helps that he’s an engineer, not a security officer. That, and a century for them to spend more tome with the Andorians and aliens and for their culture to evolve.
He’s an engineer aboard a Federation ship that does fire phasers from time to time.
But it is true. It has been more than a century since Archer’s encounter with them. Societies do change. Just look at the Enterprise era Vulcans. Another good point I did not consider.
Also, Star Trek has a tradition of aliens who are outsiders to their own culture…
The Jackets are BACK! :)
Which?
The away Team jackets, I presume.
Now that’s what I’m talking about. So far, I think Hemmer will be the show’s standout character.
Looks like we finally get to see the Enterprise’s bowling alley!
In which scene?
I forgot all about the Aenar! What a cool choice!
I thought so, too.
This looked awesome!!! They had a TOS inspired alien (reminds me of when Andorians used to be described as “good” Klingons), had some humor and loved the engineering set!!
Of course the original Klingons were not evil meanies. They were a warrior race that was the moral equivalent of the Federation. That’s it.
Technological equivalent maybe but not moral.
See, this is awesome and I’d have liked it more if the show had introduced more cool new characters like this than resorting to going back to legacy or legacy adjacent characters. Get some more cool aliens in there, maybe a horta, a tholian or a totally new alien that is a first for starfleet. This is how creativity, imagination and originality work. Otherwise you end up recycling what came before.
Same here, I really wish they’d left legacy characters alone, but we all know where the showrunners are headed here, “TOS 2.0.” Couldn’t (shouldn’t) have a Horta involved – they were an unknown species until “Devil In The Dark,” I believe, but I dig what you’re saying.
Decades ago I heard from a friend that there was a novel or something where there was a Horta crewmember. Never confirmed that myself but I had no reason to doubt him at the time.
I mean they can still head for TOS 2.0 but in my opinion they should just take their time with it. Re-introduce the characters gradually when the time is right and when they feel the most natural to introduce. The producers just seem impatient with legacy characters.
This guy is going to be my favourite character, I can already tell!
First teaser that has got me excited and I’m full onboard to see how this plays out! Fingers crossed!
Shouldn’t he have a hood that allows for antennae? :-)
A blind actor playing a not-really-blind character is actually pretty impressive.
The Aenar are blind though.
I meant that they “see” in ways that blind humans don’t.
I get what you’re saying but you don’t have to be able to fly and have X-Ray vision to play Superman so it shouldn’t really be a big surprise that a blind actor could effectively portray a gifted blind character.
Indeed got. Looking up his resume, he’s pretty impressive one way or the other.
Indeed *not*. :-)
“What is your purpose?”
“To fix what is broken.”
I can already tell who my new favorite character is going to be!
Just seen the Dr M’benga one as well, amazing!
hope we get some Andorran women appearing on the show….they were fun from star trek enterprise
this looks so COOL. and hemmer – i think i’ll like him.
I think I’m gonna really like this dude.
