In between Star Trek: Mission Chicago panels, the band Five Year Mission kept the crowd entertained with their Star Trek: The Original Series-themed music. But after the Lower Decks panel, they performed something a bit different with a little help from show star Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner) joining in to sing the classic Talking Heads song “Psycho Killer.”
UPDATE: It turns out Tawny used to be in a Talking Heads cover band, check out the tweet below:
She used to be in a Talking Heads tribute band called This Must Be The Band and they would recreate the Stop Making Sense concert film

And by popular demand, the band has released the performance on YouTube. Check it out…
Bonus video: Mike and Tawny rally crowd with “Lower Decks” chants
Video of the opening of the earlier Lower Decks panel is now online via Mike Bogel. You can see creator Mike McMahan and Tawny Newsome each lead the capacity crowd in chants of “Lower Decks!”
More to come from Chicago
There is still more coverage from the convention, including reports from other Star Trek Universe panels. Stay tuned to TrekMovie in the coming days for more Star Trek: Mission Chicago. And CLICK HERE for all our Mission Chicago coverage so far.
Tawny has some serious pipes! That’s a perfect anthem for Mariner. They should bring in Five Year Mission on to LOWER DECKS to do a musical episode with the cast. Shaxs can sing “I Will Survive,” Rutherford could sing “Safety Dance,” and the crew could all song ABBA’s “I Have a Dream,” etc. One can hope!
The LOWER DECKS MUSICAL is a wonderful idea but not with well-known songs. I want some all-new compositions just like they did on Buffy, Xena and Supergirl back in the day… Make it a 50 minutes special and release the soundtrack :-) I swear I’m gonna learn all the lyrics by heart…
Why not have them meet a Q who is into weird singing like DC’s Music Meister… Let’s do a Q-sical… We could take a Q from Buffy, Xena and Supergirl… Take a Q… as in cue… music cue.. I’m having these weird visions… Mr McMahon, please make it happen…:-)
Great idea, plus add in Max Headroom and The Highlander.
Have Bart Simpson and Bugs Bunny guest star as well and go full Holiday Special.
Rutherford, Rutherford, Rutherford, Rutherford….
Glad to see the animated LDs cast get some face time and convention love! Great job Tawny!!!! LDs musical? Bring it on!
I guess people know this, but Tawny is also in a group with Jon Langford of The Mekons. Their group is called Four Lost Souls. And if you don’t know The Mekons, there is a lot to check out, it took me a while, and I love them.
