Great episode! Love hearing you guys sharing all the SDCC news! One thing I noticed – I froze the Picard Season 3 trailer several times and it does look like Bev is in uniform. Her leather jacket has the same branch color band at the top, it’s just a deep shade of blue. So I think Bev is still in Starfleet :)

Ooh, I went and looked and you’re right. Good! Although I liked the Doctors Without Space Borders idea. Space Doctors Without Borders? Space Doctors Without Space Borders?

Hi,

It sounds like you two had a lot of fun. Thank you for bringing the news back to us.

I’m excited for a LD/SNW crossover. It’s a gamble, but I love that they are trying new things. I’m hoping it pays off.

I’m excited for S3 Picard. Worf looks amazing. He’s always been a favorite of mine and I can’t wait to hear what he has been up to since Nemesis.

As for Bill, people forget that he is entitled to his opinion. Whether or not it was taken out of context or not, all this hate is unnecessary and toxic. And he isn’t entirely wrong. From what I have learned about Gene from the fifty year mission books, he would have disliked LD, Disco, DS9 and SNW. So what? It doesn’t take away how much I enjoy all these new shows. Bill is allowed to give his opinion, just like what we all do on social media and this website.

It’s interesting to speculate on whether or not Gene would’ve liked the new shows. As someone who never met him and has no idea (ha!), I think he would’ve liked all the diversity, especially when it comes to sexuality and gender identity. I think he would’ve taken advantage of changing times to do sexier episodes for sure. (Oh, and Tony was at Comic-Con, but Matt and I were not. We will all be together in Vegas in August, though.)

Very True! And would have enjoyed the big pay checks. You’re right. It’s speculation and we only get pieces of the man through people who knew him and they never match up. I like your point on sexuality and gender identity. The DNA of trek is within these shows and maybe he would of appreciated that.

I suspect he would’ve wanted to go even further when it comes to stories about sexuality. It was something he couldn’t do back then. I know he had some dopey sexist ideas (like Troi having three breasts) but he would’ve probably gotten past such things and been interested in exploring ideas about sexuality and gender identity for sure. And in terms of sexism, it was 100% there, but he also made James Kirk a major sex object complete with shirtless/ripped shirts scenes, mood lighting, and using his masculine wiles in the same way Charlie’s Angels did on their show!

The fifty year mission books discussed how strict he was with the writers and with what he wanted. Piller called it Gene’s box and they operated under it for most of the run of nineties trek, much to the dismay of the writers. So, I when I read Bill said-or didn’t say-that, I was like, “he’s probably not wrong.” I bore no hostility to Bill and I am a S1/S2 Disco/SNW fan.

For me, as long as the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek is in these shows-diversity, morality, optimism, exploration (space or human emotions), science and gender identity- it is Star Trek to me.

Thanks for all the news from Comic-Con. There was certainly a lot to cover! The SNW/LDS crossover sounds intriguing just so long as it’s not a live action/animated mash up, which if they’re not careful, could resemble Roger Rabbit.

Yeah, I don’t think they’ll go that route, but I get it. It’s also possible Anson was just joking about being animated.

I certainly hope so but nevertheless, it’s an intriguing prospect.

It is really a shame that you don’t have more comments when there isn’t a contest to encourage everyone. :)

My wife and I really missed you guys the week you were at the con, so we were excited to have you back. Loved your thoughts and reactions to all of the SDCC news. I am so excited for everything that is coming up, ESPECIALLY the LD/SNW crossover. I have faith in both creative teams to do something awesome and fun. Star Trek should never be stuffy and afraid to have a laugh, so it’s been great that the new shows have embraced that.

Any thoughts on the apparent collapse of Eaglemoss?

I’ll go ahead and share two “bits of the week,” if you don’t mind.Or, I guess, if you do. :)

#1. We met John Billingsley at the Shore Leave con, and he was a fantastically nice guy, while also being absolutely hilarious. Fun times with Dr. Phlox, for sure!

#2. The TOMY Enterprise replica met their slightly revised pre-order goals, so the project is a go. We may have to wait for a year, but I am incredibly excited about the final product.

We are both high school English teachers, so we will need you guys and Lower Decks to help get us through August. Thanks again for a great podcast.

I love the idea of a couple enjoying our podcast together! My husband is not a Trek fan and can’t listen even though I’m the cohost (not that I blame him). As for Eaglemoss, we are waiting on the full, official story and then we’ll be able to talk about it. And yes, we didn’t have time to talk about the TOMY Enterprise, but TM covered it. And all hail English teachers! I’m a writer and copy editor, so I salute you both.
