This is going to be a comprehensive episode written entirely from the Vulcan perspective.
I loved Deanna Troi but hated Lwaxana Troi.
The entire “joke” surrounding Lwaxana seemed to be “Middle-aged women still want to have sex, even though they aren’t pretty anymore. Isn’t that HILARIOUS?!” Um, no, actually. Disrespecting an entire segment of the population seems mean-spirited and unTrekkian to me. So I hope this episode of LD finds its humor in something else!
Agreed. A rehash of “Fascination” (DS9) would be a little disappointing.
” even though they aren’t pretty anymore.” – I don’t think that was part of the joke at all, at least not in TNG. I don’t recall much of her DS9 outings other than the sweet moment with Odo in the trapped elevator.
And I doubt Gene would have let his
mistresswife be cast as unattractive. The ‘joke’ was that she was so off-putting because she was so far over the top in her behaviors and speech.
I don’t even think the joke is that she’s off-putting, at least not in general. I think it’s that she’s maybe off-putting specifically to Jean-Luc Picard, because she’s so extroverted and flamboyant and he’s so internal and reserved. It’s just a conflict of personality. I don’t think she was ever meant to be off-putting to viewers, and certainly not the butt of a joke for being sexual. I don’t think the famously sex-driven, Barrett-smitten Roddenberry would have wanted that, and if he’d had any inkling anyone would ever interpret Lwaxana episodes that way he’d have mandated a rewrite to make it clearer that wasn’t at all the intended message.
I figured the joke was being telepathic, Betazoids don’t have the same boundaries the humans consider norms, and that makes her a good foil for a character like Picard who likes to keep it inside.
Most full Betazoids probably don’t get those stuffy humans who like to keep their clothes on.
I think she was pretty just over-the-top made up and clothed, and her interactions with Picard made me cringe as a teenager :D
Outside of Manhunt, I don’t think that was really a thing with Lwaxana. Plenty of men were attracted to her including Odo, that dude who was going to be euthanized at 60, and that creepy Ferengi. Most of her episodes weren’t really about her seeking a man.
I thought the joke was mothers/mothers-inlaw were unbearable, even in space
That’s what I thought too: the slightly mortifying mother-in-law who is a force of nature and old enough not to care what others think :-)
That was never ever the joke. At all. Nowhere even close.
OPE: I apologize! I saw your comment over on TrekCore and the phrasing over there sank in diff., so wanted to come over here and apologize for misreading!
I’m giggling to myself already just from these pictures…
Same! 😆👍
When is the next Short Treks. Daddy needs his fix.
I’m sorry the writer’s strike is over. Because whoever came up with that drek deserved to be out of a job.
Get a sense of humor. Humor is great for your health also.
What’s truly hilarious is the way people on here that have spent the last five years bashing every Trek thing has come out are drooling over the liquid poo Very Short Treks, though!
Sounds like fun!
We barely got any betazoid stories in old Trek outside of the Troi characters and none with NuTrek until now, so extremely excited for it. LDS bringing it yet again!
My interest in this cartoon wanes with each new episode.
Stop watching it then. No one is forcing you to watch. The overwhelming majority of comments on YouTube loves it. Face it, you just don’t get it.
“I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!”― Abe Simpson
Easy guy, he’s just expressing his opinion over a TV show. No need to be so angry over it.
Yes, sure, but the thing is, just saying you like it or don’t like it, without giving ANY reason at all, is nothing but egoizing. Give a reason, the way the people talking about Lwaxana did.
Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that. So far I’m having the opposite view, but hopefully it will improve for you.
The party people have arrived. Will Mariner be out-partied?
This sounds like this is going to be chaos in all the best ways possible! :D
