‘Star Trek: Picard’ And ‘Strange New Worlds’ Nominated For 8 Critics Choice Super Awards

The Critics Choice Association announced the nominees for the 4th Annual Critics Choice Super Awards, honoring the year’s finest in genre fiction (which includes categories like Superhero, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, and Action). The Star Trek franchise came in strong, totaling eight nominations, with five for Picard and three for Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek is Super for 2024

The third season of Star Trek: Picard and the second season of Strange New Worlds were both nominated Best Science Fiction / Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie. The have some tough competition from Ahsoka, American Born Chinese, Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful, Doctor Who: 60th Anniversary Specials, For All Mankind, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

There were also several acting nominations. For Best Actor in a Science Fiction / Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie, Todd Stashwick and Sir Patrick Stewart are nominated for Picard along with Anson Mount for Strange New Worlds. They are competing with Neuti Gatwa (Dr. Who: 60th Anniversary Specials), Jharrel Jerome (I’m a Virgo), and Kurt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters).

Picard’s Jeri Ryan was nominated for for Best Actress in a Science Fiction / Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie as was Celia Rose Gooding for Strange New Worlds. They are facing Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh (for American Born Chinese) as well as Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka), Betty Gilpin (Mrs. Davis), and Annie Murphy (Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful).

Finally, Picards’s Amanda Plummer was nominated for Best Villain in a Science Fiction / Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-for-TV Movie. She is going up against Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher), Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. Who: 60th Anniversary Specials), Melanie Lynskey (The Last of Us), Mary McDonnell (The Fall of the House of Usher), and Lars Mikkelsen (Ahsoka).

This is the second year in a row for Strange New Worlds getting nominated in the Best Series category, as well as the second year Anson Mount’s up for Best Actor. Both Star Trek: Picard and Sir Patrick Stewart were nominated at the 1st Annual Critics Choice Super Awards, with Stewart taking the award home.

Other Star Trek stars with nominations include:

  • Chris Pine for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves)
  • Zoe Saldaña for Best Actress in a Superhero Movie (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Best Actress in an Action Series (Special Ops: Lioness)
  • Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress in a Science Fiction / Fantasy Series and Best Actress in a Superhero Series (American Born Chinese for both)

The winners of the 4th Annual Critics Choice Super Award will be announced on Thursday, April 4th, 2024.

What even was the time period for these? I’m guessing December 2023 is after the cutoff date?

Because Percy Jackson and the Olympians got snubbed otherwise.

Award shows are the weirdest racket. Not saying it’s not nice to get them sometimes, but I’d feel a little funny to be crowing about winning a Critics Choice (no, not the main one) Super Award. The clout is debatable, and the monetary impact for a show from winning one is dubious. It feels like it’s just a ploy to boost the CCA by pandering to the genre industry it often overlooks.

Can someone please correct the typo above. The actor’s name is Ncuti Gatwa. In the text it’s Neuti Gatwa. Thanks. 😀
