‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ And ‘Lower Decks’ Nominated For Emmy Awards

This morning, the Television Academy announced its nominations for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards and there were two for Star Trek shows.

Star Trek sounds good to the Emmys

Star Trek picked up two nominations for sound editing, both of which are part of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour), for the episode “Hegemony.” It is competing with Avatar: The Last AirbenderFallout, Shogun, and 3 Body Problem.

Also being recognized for sound was Star Trek: Lower Decks, nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation, for the episode “The Inner Fight.” It is competing with Ahsoka, The Bear, Blue Eye Samurai, and Only Murders In The Building.

The following members of the Lower Decks team were nominated:

  • Drew Guy, Dialogue Editor
  • Mak Kellerman, Sound Effects Editor
  • John Wynn, Sound Effects Editor

Lower Decks season 4 episode “The Inner Fight” (Paramount+)

Both Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds have been nominated in these categories before. A total of two nominations for the franchise matches last year, when both were for Picard. Paramount+ and CBS Studios were hoping for more in 2024 and made a big “For Your Consideration” push, with emphasis on Strange New Worlds season 2 and Discovery season 5. From 2019-2022, Trek averaged around 5 Emmy nominations a year. While Discovery didn’t get any nominations this year, cast member Tig Notaro (Jett Reno) scored two, sort of: her variety special Hello Again got one for directing and one for editing.

The 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards take place at the Peacock Theater over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, with an edited presentation to air on Saturday, September 14, at 8:00 PM EDT/PDT on FXX.

Congratulations to the teams of both shows for their nominations.GOOD LUCK!

Congrats to all involved!

It’s a miracle to break through the crowd with there being so many shows in competition these days. TNG would routinely get 8-10 nominations, and DS9 and Voyager easily could get 5-7 some years, but not as many shows were occupying the same genre space and had as much attention. Or budget, really. Now everyone has superlative production values and there are lots of sci-fi and fantasy series.

CONGRATS!!! Both great shows and well deserved.

Its time for a Sci-Fi/Horror Category for the Emmy’s

Agreed, Worf, but that might be a bit tricky, as there’s been rumblings about folks wanting “comedy” and “drama” to be one category (I THINK this is a reaction to “The Bear” but I can’t recall for certain).

Why are they even bothering with Emmys this year? Because of the strikes, isn’t this about the least amount of new material in a broadcast year since the days of three networks?

Just why are comedy and drama combined into the same category? Would there be too many categories to separate them? They don’t seem like they belong together…

It’s criminal how Trek actors are bypassed in these awards. Stewart, Spiner, Brooks and now Mount all come to mind. Could make similar arguments for writers like Behr and Ronald D. Moore.
