The Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 continues with the second big reveal, this time for the upcoming fifth (and final) season of Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Season 5 teaser
At the panel, which featured cast members Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Jerry O’Connell alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Mike McMahan, it was revealed the fifth and final season of the animated comedy will premiere on Paramount+ with two episodes on Thursday, October 24 in the U.S. and internationally. Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode long season will drop every Thursday on the service leading up to the series finale on Thursday, December 19.
Also revealed during the panel was our first look at the season with a teaser trailer which you can see below.
Space potholes in season 5
Here is the official synopsis for the new season:
In season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes” – subspace rifts which are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford…if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all: their own career aspirations. This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.
And they also provided us with three first look images…
Inspired by a classic
The above trailer is paying homage to the original teaser trailer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (below), which was also about a crew’s final journey.

Love this show! Hopefully they get more seasons! If not what they have given us has been truly fantastic! Can’t wait to see their multiverse counterparts, undercover mission and the growth they will give them as they move beyond being just lower deckers.
“Hopefully they get more seasons!”
The show’s cancelation was announced last year. This is the last season.
That doesn’t mean they can’t be picked up by someone else. It’s not likely though.
The show is over Jim.
I wouldn’t object to a Paramount+ movie, though.
I guess it’s probably just wishful thinking but I feel like the “final season” is a scam. Some of the cast said they don’t want it to end, and I seem to remember MacMahan (or maybe one the actors) hinting that’s not the last we see of these characters. And then the last line of the synopses “This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.”
It seems like maybe they are gearing up for a spin-off with some of these characters that will no longer be lower decks (they already aren’t anymore anyway). Maybe even some of them leaving Starfleet to work at the new Tandy Newsome work-place show?
Ok, it IS just wishful thinking. I am just not ready to say goodbye to those characters.
Dude that trailer was fantastic!!
It looks like we’re getting another amazing season and still so sad it’s the final one but it looks like it’s going to be awesome.
Oh and staring out with that teaser trailer was genius. Mike McMahan is truly a fan in every way.
I love this show too much!
I IMMEDIATELY recognized and appreciated and LOVED the homage to the teaser trailer for St6:TUC — love it, love it!
Watched three episodes (again) of season 4 today.
Cannot wait for season 5!
Totally geeking out about the homage right away, too! I love that LD is the only kind of show that will do these deep cuts.
Hope Mariner doesn’t go back with Jennifer (im assuming she’ll be in the 3rd episode) wasn’t a fan of that character
But it would be nice to at least get some closure on her turning her back on Mariner along with everybody else, after being absent a whole season. I wasn’t a big fan of the character, either, but that did feel like a character beat that needed some closure.
I’ll truly miss this show.
Oh how I love this show.
Bittersweet. It looks great, but I don’t want it to end.
At least Tawny is developing a new Trek comedy show with Justin Simien. The more Trek she is involved in the better.
Brilliant trailer!
Looks great!
Thank you, Lower Decks, for a great run.
Lower Decks is the first animated series to go 5 seasons.
NGL, this has been the best Trek in decades. It’ll be missed.
Fully agree!
