Thank you Anthony and Gloria. I enjoy your podcast each week.
The Kate Mulgrew interview was Gloria-ous.
We tease you because we love, you Laurie (or is it now GLauriea?).
Can’t wait to listen!
Great podcast! Thank you Anthony and ‘Gloria’ as usual. A few thoughts.
I agree with both of you about the Section 31 trailer. Utter crap! And the fact both of you said you wouldn’t watch it if it wasn’t called Star Trek in the title really says it all. Thats a BIG problem IMO. It just felt so off. And it’s funny you guys brought up it was supposed to be a GOTG vibe and Laurie brought up the awful Beyond trailer because that was the vibe that trailer was ALSO going for at the time. And we saw how well that was received and I think a reason why the movie bombed.
It just bothers me because only Star Trek do they try to market it to look like other properties and to usually negative results. No one has to market a Star Wars, Batman or Harry Potter movie or show differently but I digress. Hopefully the next trailer will actually look like Star Trek.
As for the Tawny Newsome comedy show, I’m actually a bit hopeful about it as well. If you like LDS at least then I think people should be open minded. And as said both of them sounds like huge Trek nerds. I never seen Dear White People, the movie or show but thinking of having a look now.
And I also agree it’s probably happening and not Legacy because it’s far cheaper to do. But people keep saying making Legacy will only bring in old fans but I don’t remotely see how this will be different? Especially when it’s a comedy and like LDS it will probably be a lot of inside jokes only long term fans knows.
But it’s also proof Paramount isn’t obsessed with getting new fans as we assume they do. But it’s probably a long way off to really knows how it will play.
Looking forward to SFA and I lol when one of you said Paul Giamati cried when he got the role. Guy really happy to be there. But so far love all the casting choices, especially the Doctor and really looking ro hearing more about the show. But it’s funny how many more people are at least more interested about this show now since his announcement. There are quite a few YouTube videos on it now.
Lastly loved the Mulgrew interview. Could listen to her all day. And I agree with you guys they are probably serious about bringing Janeway back to live action, just a matter of when and how. Its what so many fans want and after the taste we got on Prodigy I really want more. I be open to anything, a movie or an actual show of some kind. It still sucks she didn’t appear in Picard. That would’ve been amazing even as just a cameo but yeah money.
So lots of good stuff (minus the S31 trailer) and looking forward to seeing what’s next. And yes hopefully we get some news about season 3 for Prodigy and I’m glad McMahan is fighting to do more with the LDS characters. I still think they could do streaming movies. I just want more of both.
That is excellent point about the S31 trailer. It is one thing to put a different spin on it, but to market Star Trek in such an un-Trek way does not make sense. You mentioned Batman: whether it’s Tim Burton, Christopher Nolan, or Matt Reeves, Batman is still Batman. There is no question. Why spin Star Trek into something that is not Star Trek? I get trying to expand into other demographics or even to tell a different story in the Trek sandbox, but this shows that the filmmakers are almost embarrassed to make a Star Trek production.
Now the Lower Decks Season 5 trailer with the TUC trailer homage leans heavily into the Trek-ness.
I disagree with this claim that Trek should not be made into something that is not Trek, or be marketed in a way that is not Trek, including with the understanding that it is to capture new demographics. Reasonable marketing simply reflects the nature of what is being sold. More importantly, it is perfectly fine and even the very cause for celebration in recent years that the new Trek shows have deviated from classic patterns despite being seen as uncertain or risky ventures. That shows creative life is still coursing through the artistic veins of a franchise. It is inevitable that in a series of vigorously experimental projects some will fail to be popular or even be judged of high quality. Given that such projects come out so slowly but are preceded by so much discussion and advanced teasers, one may feel they must satisfy old tastes or else represent foolish hubris. But as long as one is thinking in terms of conceptual richness rather than financial profit, experimentation for a franchise like Star Trek that pushes the boundaries of acceptable taste at the cost of some disappointments should be welcomed. Nothing we have seen so far with respect to the S31 movie or other new Trek projects warrants disregarding this cardinal rule of artistic creativity.
Hi, Laurie! I was excited to hear that you haven’t forgotten about Doctor Who. I’m really interested to find out what you think. I hope you love it!
Have a great time at STLV. I wish my wife and I could be there, but we’re teachers and we start back to school on Monday. Boo!
I hope you get to check out some Roddenberries live performances. I love those guys!
I have not forgotten! It’s on my list… just need time to get ot it. Sorry you guys couldn’t be here but being teachers is pretty damned awesome.
Aww, thank you! It is pretty awesome…most of the time, anyway! :)
Quick story that makes me happy: I teach high school English, and share all my “nerdy” passions with my students. I think it’s pretty important for young people to see that it’s healthy to have interests that you love and that it is okay to share those with the world, to fully embrace who you are without worrying what other people might think. (Not an easy thing for most of us at that age!)
I had a student who graduated last year with a fascination for space science and mathematics. With a little prompting, she decided to try out some Star Trek. She watched Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, and then she decided to go back to the beginning. She is almost done with TOS now, and absolutely loves it. My favorite thing is that she’s been keeping a journal filled with all of her favorite quotes from the show! We took her and her dad to their first Star Trek convention at Farpoint where she was able to speak to Dr. Erin McDonald. It was so cool!
I won’t be at all surprised if she ends up being the one to discover how to make a real warp drive.
I hope everyone in Vegas is still having a fantastic time there!
With Mike McMahan now emphasizing Lower Decks S5 is the last on Paramount+ (backed up by Tawny Newsome), I now suspect the studio told him he’ll eventually be able to shop the show around.
Mike’s been saying on Bluesky that big S5 viewership numbers will help them push for more seasons. My guess, it’s not to get P+ to reverse the cancellation, but to convince other networks/streamers that there’s still an audience.
I would think that turning a human into a Vulcan might make them smarter, but wouldn’t make them logical or racist. If anything, they would become more emotional after turning into Vulcans.
It seems inaccurate to describe the trailer as reflecting a Guardians of the Galaxy type movie. That type of movie feels much more campy and goofy, for which neither the content of the trailer nor the Emperor (even in her ‘reformed’ condition) seems a good fit. The hope is that the movie deviates from most Trek by capitalizing exactly in those elements of the story we know about it – Section 31 and the Emperor and an unconventional team of Starfleet operatives. Thus a spy thriller with an element of sass from Georgiou and some interesting background filler for a time period and character we would like to know more of. I do not see goofiness or light-heartedness in this.
I tend to agree. Guardians of the Galaxy has a lot of fun in it, there’s a joy and playfulness despite the peril. This feels more like a spy thriller than a romp.
