So we’re just….not gonna do a post memorializing Patti Yasutake? That’s disappointing.
We did social posts. We are a small team and do our best to cover as much as we can, but we don’t always have enough bandwidth to do all the articles we’d like.
Perhaps, but Patti Yasutake was an important recurring character in TNG and deserves a post – certainly more so than all the ruminations about Lower Decks and live-action comedies. She is also a prominent Asian-American actress.
If you search the site archives, TrekMovie has even written articles about people passing away who appeared in Trek fan films. But nothing for Nurse Ogawa??
eh..it’s also a choice. I don’t follow social channels, so, while I now know about a Galaxy Quest / Star Trek crossover for a game maybe 100 people play, I didn’t know about this until I saw this thread. I get that it’s hard to make those choices on what will drive traffic though.
No disrespect, but her passing was mentioned on the social media page. If you’re feeling the need, pop over to the chat page and put something up.
The panel went so fast, but you sure got through all the shows, as well as the current streaming situation. That was a lot to get to in under an hour as well as taking questions.
It went fast for us too!
Thanks gang! It was an excellent review of Trek. I still feel that there are MANY ways to Trek and I am excited to see what the creatives do. Lower Decks and Prodigy prove that there are many flavors of Trek…I want to keep tasting.
And, it was great to see you all in person. Keep up the GREAT work. LLAP
So glad you came to the panel! Thanks!
RE: Trek movie. Am I the only one who’s noticed the cone of silence has descended on this ‘current’ production. For a 2026 release (still TBD on Box Office Mojo) you’d need to be in principle photography (likely) no later than Q1 (maybe early Q2) 2025.
I’m not holding my breath….
Thanks team, listened this morning on the drive to work.
Stood out that the audience still want Legacy.
Section 31 cheer for Michelle Yeoh but not the promo
I’m more in for Acadamy due mostly to the recent casting.
Yeah I don’t think you are the only one. I stated a month ago this movie seems to be heading down the same stalemate as the last 8 or whatever the count is now. Just complete silence for a movie that’s supposed to be out in two years time and the clock is really ticking now.
I watched some of the D23 events on YouTube yesterday (for some people who may not know it’s Disney’s version of Comic Con basically) and I was shocked to hear they already started shooting the new Mandalorian movie and that’s scheduled to come out May 2026.
Unless they are targeting the movie for winter of 2026, I highly doubt it will be out that year, certainly not by that summer because NOTHING has been done so far. It’s very obvious though they aren’t exactly worried a movie won’t be made by the 60th anniversary. If we hear nothing starting by the end of the year expect it by 2027, especially as the 2026 calendar only gets more full by the big boys.
And it was surprising to hear Anthony thinks the next Kelvin movie is 4-5 years away now, but yeah shouldn’t be too surprising lol. I still doubt it will ever happen at this point. I just don’t think enough people cares one way or the other anymore.
Great panel, guys!
I felt like a lot of the pre-airing skepticism about Prodigy stemmed from folks not having watched any modern animation and assuming it was all garbage, and now we’re seeing the same thing with “YA” series and Academy. There’s plenty of YA dreck to be sure, but that’s also true of action and drama series for adults and, let’s be honest, sci-fi shows in general. I think it’s good to watch things outside of your “demo”—you might be pleasantly surprised!
But I just recently finished Interview with the Vampire and then watched a couple episodes of Bluey, so I suppose I’m an edge case.
I agree with you. I think a lot of people were very surprised by how great Prodigy is, and for those thrown by the YA label, Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti might change things.
Good Pod. How many people were in attendance, in your estimate of course. I was surprised by the noticeable lack of applause when you asked who watched Discovery, Prodigy, and even SNW. What did you think about the lack of enthusiastic applause?
Not too surprised about Prodigy or Discovery but was a little surprising SNW didn’t get more either.
But maybe it sounded bigger in the room itself or there wasn’t a huge audience.
I can’t remember how many people were there; I was surprised we got a decent crowd given that we were up at the same time as two back-to-back DS9 panels we all wanted to go to! A lot of times people raised their hands instead of clapping, but I do remember being surprised SNW didn’t got a big roar as it seems to be really popular!
I quite liked SNW season 1, but with the ‘bit swings’ still apparent in the rather silly clip from Season 3, I really hope the series hasn’t jumped the shark.
Thanks Laurie!
One other thing. Star Trek is always better when it has antagonists, not villians (see Disco Season4). I’m hoping the Academy show manages to make this course correction.
Great panel guys. My quick and random thoughts about futureprojects discussed.
A. It’s very obvious most of the crowd is still pushing for the Legacy show. Not a shock, but yeah. I also agree with Anthony if it happens it may not be until SNW is done.
B. It was a little surprising more people seem to like the Section 31 trailer given the thrashing its getting online, so that’s hopeful at least.
C. Not surprising is the skeptical view of SFA and most seem to think it will be a lackluster YA show even though they have big stars attached and bringing back the Doctor. But it sounds like nearly everyone will give it a chance regardless.
D. Everyone seems very ho hum about another movie. Again Paramount has only themselved to blame at this point and jerking people around for 8 years now. And while it wasn’t specially stated I just don’t think knowing it’s another prequel or it taking place mostly on Earth helps much. At the moment it does sound something closer to the original ideas of Enterprise season one.
E. I’m not sure how well the new comedy show went over in that room either. I’m personally intrigued by it but it’s probably as welcoming as the S 31 movie and SFA which means not a whole lot right now.
Maybe I’m just reading the room wrong and since I’m only hearing the audio and wasn’t there I could be off in my assessment but it just doesn’t sound like there is a lot of excitement about any of these announced future projects. Certainly nothing close to Picard or SNW when those were announced at least. Of course most of it is still very far from the finished product with only Section 31 that’s even complete so minds can change quickly.
If LDS can win over so many fans today, then anything can lol
The upcoming project Star Trek project I am most excited for is actually the First Contact reboot movie. I think it is because it is hopefully a reboot, and will involve elements we have not seen before that interests me. My only hope is that it does involve the Vulcans somehow, but I am ok with a total Star Trek reboot. Why not?
Of course, if Matalas came back to do a Legacy show, then that would be my most anticipated project, but that will not happen. So, here’s hoping for a good Star Trek reboot movie!
Because flushing 50+ years of content down the toilet is a stoopid idea?
I couldn’t make it to San Diego but the Galaxy Con is this Friday!
Nice! Be sure to give us a mini trip report! :)
Talking at STLV, heard there were some Covid-19 cases…
Wouldn’t surprise me. There were also reported Covid-19 cases at the Olympics. Apparently, some athletes even competed while being sick.
Covid-19 is not going to go away completely. There is simply much less reporting on it, and Covid-specific health regulations have probably run out. Luckily, because many people hare been vaccinated and/or have gone through at least one infection by now, the number of severe cases is much lower than it used to be.
Yeah, one of the hosts from Trekculture, Ellie, said she caught covid at the convention too.
