Watch Tendi’s Action-Packed Return In ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Season 5 Clip

Today, September 8, is Star Trek Day, which celebrates the 58th anniversary of the debut of The Original Series on NBC. The next Star Trek show debut is coming on October 24th with the fifth (and final) season of the animated adult comedy Lower Decks, and Paramount+ has just released a clip as a Star Trek Day present to the fans. They also released a poster for the season.

The Mistress of the Winter Constellations returns

Season 4 ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with Tendi leaving the USS Cerritos, called home to family duty on Orion. The new clip picks up on her story…

As fitting Lower Decks tradition, the new clip is full of Easter eggs, including what appears to be the return of Palor Toff, one of the Collectors from the classic TNG episode “The Most Toys.”

The above clip is likely part of the “Orion war” storyline noted in the official season 5 synopsis:

In season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes”—subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Junior Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford…if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all: their own career aspirations. This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

In a post Comic-Con interview, showrunner Mike McMahan teased this Orion story, saying “We pull in some Orion lore that’s been discarded over the decades.”

New poster

The fifth season of Lower Decks premieres on Paramount+ with two episodes on Thursday, October 24 in the U.S. and internationally. Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode long season will drop every Thursday on the service, leading up to the “gigantic” series finale on Thursday, December 19.

Paramount+ has also released a new poster for the season…

In keeping with the last three, there is inspiration from the poster for “The Final Frontier.” Marvelous!

Where do you see that?

It’s pretty clearly based on the reddish posted of Star Trek V with Kirk and Spock’s heads in front of the Enterprise, with the lines coming out at the viewer to form a V.

The previous posters were clearly inspired by the TOS originals, both in terms of layout and color scheme. By comparison I’m finding any connection here to be pretty tenuous.

Yeah, I want it to recall the Star Trek V release poster and it doesn’t.

agree. In black and white it would more closely resemble, but if you want to invoke Final Frontier’s poster, it needs a LOT of red

The placement and angle of the Cerritos looming over the main characters, with a secondary smaller depiction of the bridge crew underneath. It’s not as obvious as the others, but it was still the first thing I thought of.

I won’t deny that the similarities are there if you’re of a mind to go looking for them. But that’s the point — you’re only seeing them now because the previous seasons led you to expect to see them. Maybe I’m wrong, but I very much doubt that anyone looking at this poster would make an association with Trek 5 without being prompted. Posters for the previous seasons were instantly recognizable as riffs on the equivalent TOS posters from the movie era, which I thought was a lot of fun. But that just doesn’t seem to be the case here. Too bad.

I get the shuttle on the far left and Sulu’s line from V, “Actually, it’s my first attempt.”

I don’t understand why they are canceling a well received fan favorite show. It’s a bad call.

Probably for the same reason all these shows are getting canceled, lack of money and/or views.

Again I love LDS but it’s probably not hitting enough viewers to keep it going full time. But if it got this far then someone was watching it.

I think the biggest issue with all these shows are being on a service a lot of fans still refuse to pay for. I still see posts in places like Reddit or YouTube of fans haven’t seen these new shows because they refuse to pay or don’t have the money for another service. $5-10 a month don’t sound like a lot but a lot of people can’t justify even that if they have bigger priorities. And less so if you only get it to watch one show.

But if they moved it to Netflix or Amazon it would be a much bigger hit but also with more competition so there is always a plus or minus. But I do have a feeling that’s what McMahan is angling for and to try and sell the show to another service like Prodigy ended up doing.

It’s very clear the show is extremely popular for the people who actually watch it, but how many that is is the big question mark. I would love to know how it’s doing on Amazon since that’s where it is internationally.

Yuppers. Agreed. The only show Paramount will save is Yellowstone. Frankly the company is going under and only Skydance will decide what gets saved.

IMHO it’s because Paramount is going under

Legacy artwork. God forbid McMahan creates something original.

Good point. After all, there were already so many other zany rapid-fire cartoon comedies set in the Star Trek universe, so there’s really no excuse for McMahan creating yet another one. How boring!

It would be nice if more people realized that argument was lazier than they accuse this show of being.

A zany rapid-fire cartoon comedy where 90% of the material trades on nostalgia and legacy.

Never been done before and it’s fiercely original. Argument doesn’t hold weight, so sorry.

Feel free to express your distaste by not watching and discussing.

It’s called “literary criticism” for a reason; critical commentary is appropriate.

It’s funny to say this about the most original modern trek show

I have a William Shatner signed “The Final Frontier” poster!!!

This shouldn’t be the final season!

Totally agree!

5 seasons are enough for an animated comedy imo. Besides after S4 i feel the quality of the show has fallen imo.

I wanted 7 seasons…and a movie!

But 5 seasons is good. And I don’t think this is the very end of LDS. I do think they will try to do a streaming movie or even a special down the line. Fans and McMahan do seem to want more.

Who is saying 5 seasons are enough!? How many seasons of the The Simpsons are there!?

Season 36 starts this fall.

Different metrics in terms of ROI. In terms of quality, I certainly agree it could keep going.

Excellent point

We have Prodigy in Netflix. Lower Decks could easily move to a new home for Season 6!

Simpsons, family guy, American dad, South Park, futurama have all ran for decades

All true but the biggest difference is those shows never pass with time and LDS does so it would be hard to do the show that long and keep the premise of the show. They already got promoted last season so it’s hard to keep that going longer than a few more years.

I seen people suggest they can bring in new lower deck characters bit I think a lot of fans have gotten attached to these guys to just start over.

To be fair Family Guy got cancelled but then came back.

Yeah it sucks they cancelled it. Maybe if the seasons weren’t so short it might not feel as bad.

Not at all! Not at all. It’s sad but it is great to see how many fans are against it getting cancelled so hopefully they can at least try other options to continue the show. It may not work but I don’t think this is the end of seeing out lower deckers either!

Who knows? Maybe Skydance will bring it back???

Right? This is such a great show!

It looks cool!

Happy Star Trek Day! 🖖

Happy 58th anniversary of Star Trek day everybody!!

And now the one week anniversary of the Bell Riots! The revolution is happening people.

And I’ll happily take a clip of Lower Decks to celebrate the day. As usual it looks awesome and I can’t wait. Love the poster as well.

Wow, Trek is as old as I am. And looks much better! 😄. Cheers, Tiger.

I’m older than Trek…..by a bit over two years. Not sure how I should feel about that.

Lol yeah but Star Trek will out live us all. Always love talking to you Danpanie! 🖖

Damn I wish I could see a First Contact LD poster

From orion with love

Here is the international link to the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDiXthMIAUQ

I just spent time reading most of the comments and you see the outpouring of love fans have for this show. Star Trek fans are rarely that positive about anything lol. And I have to agree with them, if any show deserves to keep going longer it’s this one.

What makes this show so great for me is both its optimism and heart. I really hope they figure out a way to keep it going in some form.

It’d be great if this last season of Lower Decks was just a cover for next season’s new Star Trek: Middle Decks. Here’s hoping!

Not to bring up the Borg in the transwarp conduit but here we are literally two years away from the 60th anniversary and the movie side of the franchise is still total crickets.

Didn’t we get another useless press release from Paramount the Starfleet origin prequel movie was supposed to come out by 2026? It’s now September of 2024 and zero movement on anything.

This day would’ve been a great time to at least remind people another movie (for the 6th or 7th time) is in the works.

It’s very obvious we’re not getting a movie for the 60th anniversary which is not only sad for the franchise in itself it also means it will be over a decade since the last one came out. I don’t think even in my wildest cynicism it would be over 10 years before another movie is made.

But I guess it doesn’t mean a movie can’t premiere by the 60th if they decide to do a cheaper streaming movie on Paramount Plus. So one can still happen by then. Personally I would take a Legacy movie or even a LDS streaming movie 100 times over another prequel story, in theaters or not; but that’s just me.

Eitherway just make a movie already Paramount.

Optimism my dear Captain! Cannot be a 50th Anniversary Repeat! I bet Kurtzman will announce a “Legacy” production.

Yeah I think most fans would prefer something ‘Legacy’ based versus the Starfleet origin movie or even another Kelvin movie. Solely my opinion of course but sadly Paramount doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make any of them happen.

Actually I went back to the original Starfleet movie article and the Paramount CEO literally said the plan was to start shooting that by the end of this year. They haven’t even bothered to cast anyone yet or start any pre-production from what I can tell so clearly it’s not happening this year.

But I do think we could get another streaming movie, regardless what it is, before a theatrical movie happens. But that will prpbably depend on how successful Section 31 ends up being.

Fans quite obviously, and quite sadly, would prefer legacy characters, reference, nostalgia and memberberries yes.

But Kurtzman and the various showrunners should be better than that, and push the franchise forward instead of this constant, endless, looking to the past to prop up almost every show.

Thank you for repeating this for the thousandth time now. Very very helpful.

But do you have anything to say about if a movie would get made before the 60th or not? Hence, my actual topic? Instead of the same song and dance you been saying here for over a year already?

And another origin story or prequel is the very opposite of taking a franchise ‘forward’ which is what the Starfleet movie is not by every definition of that word.

“Forward” doesn’t just mean literally moving forwards in time.

If it’s just a story filling in stuff to things we already know about then it’s not moving forward either. It’s why so many people hated the Khan show idea. (ugh)

And look at that even though it starred a famous legacy character and everything. No one is begging for more Khan precisely because it wouldn’t push the character forward and why most people are shrugging over the Starfleet movie. It’s more proof people still want to see NEW stories with them, not just regurgitate stuff we known about for decades now as much as you accuse fans just want more nostalgia and memberberries.

And you didn’t bother to actually discuss my main point again. I really really wish I can not see your boring tedious posts here.🙄

I really really wish I can not see your boring tedious posts here.”

Yeah, Prophets forbid you simply scroll past them.

It doesn’t matter when he/she spams the boards with the same nonsense every time. He’s been doing this for over a year now and it’s gotten beyond annoying because it always derails conversation.

I mean, a conversation requires two or more participants.

Of course people can ignore trolls but they are trolls for a reason. Someone will always take the bait for no other reason to defend themselves when they are feeling like they they are being attacked by them. I just get too easily annoyed as you can see lol. He’s such a troll he changed his name from Emily because he KNOWS people got tired of it…only to just do the same thing. I don’t get people like this.

He’s harmless enough where he hasn’t done anything to get banned…unfortunately. But that’s why ignore buttons work better because if you don’t see it, it’s easier to ignore completely.

He’s just a waste of time here and people have become very tired of it.

This guy is definitely trolling (or just have a mental condition of some kind which probably most trolls actually have). His shtick has become very tiresome now. But you’re right he probably won’t get banned because he’s harmless enough and he doesn’t come off like a bully or psycho like AP and the Upper-decks crazies did who tormented people and these boards for far too long. People like that shouldn’t be on ANY boards.

This guy just have this very odd obsession and when ignore buttons really do come in handy.

They know they are trolling because why would you change your handle? And from a different gender? Because people got sick of their crap and they probably thought if they show up with a different handle they can start over or something lol.

Not when you still stick to the same diatribe and keep having the exact same arguments. This isn’t Reddit, You can’t hide here for very long. And it’s always funny to see these people try to be someone else but it rarely lasts longer than a few days or weeks because they just eventually revert back to their same crazy selves and everyone sees it.

Harry or Emily isn’t as bad as the ones you mentioned but when you’re constantly derailing threads just to spam the same thing in every article that is indeed trolling. And they seem to know that but can’t help themselves.

Of course people can ignore trolls but they are trolls for a reason.

Even in the silly season of political campaigns, “I disagree with something” doesn’t mean that something is “misinformation” or a “troll” — however much as some partisans would try to characterize it as such.

That has absolutely nothing to do what I’m talking about. Nothing.

It doesn’t matter when he/she spams the boards with the same nonsense every time.

I mean, you also post the boards with comments about how much you like LOWER DECKS. Why is it illegitimate to hammer criticism home, but legitimate to continually repeat praise? Fawning and flattery is a recipe for groupthink, for the emperor’s new clothes, not for a vibrant and healthy artistic work.

I suspect that the writers and producers do monitor the major Trek sites, at least sporadically, and I think it’s beneficial for the franchise, even in its lackluster condition today, for them to see that the obsession with prequels, comedy, cartoon, legacy characters, and nostalgia isn’t universally beloved. I for one therefore applaud Harry’s comments.

SUPERMAN (at least under Christopher Reeve and the Salkinds) never recovered from its foray into slapstick comedy. The Bond franchise did — indeed it did arguably twice — but only after a few long-ish hiatuses and a commitment to retooling, and perhaps some informal pressure to live up to Ian Fleming’s literary heritage.

Spamming is TROLLING! When you turn every post about how much fans want legacy characters and 99% of the posts you’re responding to has NOTHING to do with that, then it’s trolling.

And what does me saying I like a show has to do with that? Are you suggesting I am spamming the boards telling everyone how much I love LDS? I do this on every board? I starts fight with people who doesn’t like the show? In the five years I been discussing this show can you tell me one person I argued about it? Or if I have ever baited people into useless arguments about it? And to some of the same posters over and again? Really dude? This is what you are saying what I do because that’s what HE does and what I’m talking about here.

Do you know why I mentioned how how much I like LDS on this thread? Because ITS ABOUT LDS!

If he wants to talk about legacy characters in every thread, fine, LEAVE ME OUT OF IT! Which btw I have asked him to do in the past. You don’t want me to get on his case about trolling then stop baiting me with the same useless discussion over and over and over again and you’ll never hear a peep out of me about it.

He’s trolling. It’s against the rules.

Bro, you know there is no movie happening lol. These clowns are not making another movie. I have said this before, they probably announced another one to show their new overlords who bought the studio that they had projects in the wing but probably never had any intention of actually make it. It could happen but my guess is they will let Skydance decide if they want to make it or not, so there will probably be no movement on it until they officially take over. Love to be proven wrong, but…

TBH, I don’t care if they cancelled the Starfleet movie and the JJ verse movie (which will probably never happen anyway) and just come up with something completely new and forward thinking that fans can get excited about again. Something post-Nemesis. Not Legacy, something brand new with new characters I mean, but in the 25th or 26th century.

It’s amazing though how much damage Beyond bombing ended up doing. When Nemesis tanked I thought at the time we wouldn’t see another movie for at least ten years. But now, crazy enough it looks like it will be over ten years before another movie arrives. Remember when we were told the ‘new regime’ was going to take it more seriously and actually get a movie out? That turned out to be an utter joke because they all know it’s not a sure thing anymore…but they can’t stop announcing them lol.

JJ verse was originally meant to bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness…

Lol yeah I know. And I only brought it up because it hit me they now have less than 18 months if they wanted to get the movie out by summer of 2026 which is obviously not happening now.

They could push it back to winter 2026 and still come out during the anniversary but I’m not holding my breath on that anymore either. That is now basically just two years away.

You’re probably right they will just wait for Skydance to take over and decide where to go next with them. And they could scrap those and come up with something completely different.

I would also prefer something post Nemesis but with a new group of characters as well. Don’t see it happening but regaredless what ultimately happens we are probably several more years away unless something dramatic changes. If they stick with the Starfleet movie I’ll stay open minded about it. I do like we will get a new cast of characters if nothing else. But I have a feeling Zefram Cochrane will probably be there.

Regardless, hopefully it won’t be a complete shitshow as it’s been for the last 8 years now and they come up with a real game plan. If they have to take a few more years to start over and go in a new direction so be it.

Oops meant less than 2 years and not 18 months. Not sure what I was thinking .

I was going to ask if summer starts in March for you ;-)

You mentioned earlier that “the Paramount CEO literally said the plan was to start shooting that by the end of this year”.

This could still happen. Just because they haven’t made any casting announcements does not mean that they aren’t looking or haven’t signed on any people. If this is supposed to be a smaller movie chances are the cast won’t consist of a long list of A-listers. Casting could happen under the radar.
Do I think it’s likely they will actually start production by the end of this year? No. But is it impossible that they will start production? Probably “No” again.

First of all I hope you’re completely right and I’m completely wrong! And I’m usually am wrong EXCEPT when it comes to discussing the fate of these movies lol.

And yeah it’s just not looking good. For starters this movie actually has a writer and director which we have not heard from about anything literally since they been hired. It’s been SO long I bet you most people reading this don’t even remember their names. I can tell you I certainly didn’t lol. I looked them up and it’s Toby Haynes who is the director and Seth Grahame-Smith as the writer.

Now here is another crazy thing, they announced their hiring the day they announced the movie exactly 9 months to the day. That was on January 10th. It’s now September 11th and we have not heard one single update about this movie in all this time from either one of them. Not one peep. And that was actually my point, it seem like for a movie you announced 9 months ago, it would’ve been nice if we got one actual update by now since nearly a year has passed.

But here is the other funny thing. The last movie they announced was happening followed the exact same pattern. The Kelvin movie was announced on February 15th 2022 and they had already announced both the director, Matt Shakman and the writer (whose name is escaping me right now) before hand.. and we never heard from either one of them in that entire year.. Again not one single statement about the status of the film. Now this is where it gets really funny, because they also announced a starting date , wait for it, at the end of that year in 2022.

Here was the headline TM made for it:

“Star Trek 2023 Movie To Reunite Kelvin Crew, Production Set To Start By End Of Year”

You can not make this up lol.

Now here we are TWO YEARS LATER having the exact same conversation about a different movie that’sf ollowing the same pattern. And of course the difference was they already had a cast and yet none of them knew nothing in all that time either.

This movie doesn’t even have a freaking cast yet. The director and writer seems to be just as much out of the conversation the last guys before they dropped out to do other things.

Again maybe this time will be different and AFAIK at least the director and writer are still there and hasn’t been snatched up by Marvel yet. But it does feel like it’s going the same way. If so, I think most of us will never understand why does this keep happening over and over again? It boggles the mind. I just do not understand it?

I agree with you that it doesn’t seem likely to happen (like I said at the end of my previous comment).
Yet, some people have suggested that it’s impossible for a movie to come out by 2026. However, they haven’t passed the timeline they announced for the prequel movie yet which is why I think it’s still possible, even if unlikely.
Maybe they’ll do something like what CBS Studios/Secret Hideout pulled off with Picard season 3 where nobody had any idea they were shooting a full TNG reunion until they had the whole season in the can. Again: Not likely, I know.

At least we know we’ll get season 5 of Lower Decks soon.

Again you could be right but it’s all just feeling very familiar at this point. Fans have been doing this literally since 2016. “There is a good chance the next one can come out by 2019 ” “Maybe 2020 is doable now that Hawley is onboard.” “I think 2022 may happen. Pegg said once they clear the actors schedule it could happen by early Spring.”

And on and on and on. Speculation and years go by but never any movie. They keep announcing them, hire writers and directors and seem, at that moment, things are in play. And then….nothing.

And the thing about waiting this late is Hollywood basically shuts down production from Thanksgiving through New Years My guess is at this point IF there is nothing being done now it will probably happen early next year the soonest

Now all that said the movie could still happen and just delayed awhile considering Paramount’s woes. I’m more inclined to TG1701 theory they may just wait until Skydance takes over and they decide to make it or not.

And if they miss the anniversary then what’s the rush? There clearly isn’t any rush now for the last 8 years.

I suppose the easiest thing for them to do would be to get the Abrams cast back together (not that easy, I know, especially with at least two of them becoming huge stars) with a good story (definitely not that easy). Far more straightforward than all these origin etc. clever ideas. Kirk and Co. on the Enterprise, end of story. But they keep getting distracted.

Actually the Kelvin movie is still supposed to be happening too lol. They have ANOTHER writer for it and said it’s supposed to come out after this movie is released. Yeah, OK.

goin’ to miss that show.

Same bro…same!

Well I’m not going to miss that show… because I’m going to re-watch it from S1 multiple times, like I’ve been doing with Enterprise (after doing it with DS9).

True! 👍

LOWER DECKS SEASON 5 BABY!!!! I’m so hyped for this. Seeing my girl Tendi stomping major ass is how you do it! I wish this could come out sooner. But this show is what I’m excited to watch the most this year.

Loved it!

LOVE, LOVE the tradition of calling back the original movie posters — surprised to say I honestly didn’t notice it until the third season, then went back to seasons one and two and there it was. Season 5 art is a very clever callback to Star Trek V.

LOVE lower decks and grateful for another season. For me these are ‘keepers’ and the DVDs will be played frequently.

Plus, this show gave me the best line ever spoken in canon Star Trek: “Oh [bleep] the Moopsie is free!”

Can’t wait for season 5!

I hope this website’s team is OK. It’s been silent here for almost a week, which is atypical of TrekMovie.

They have been known to disappear for extended periods occasionally.

I fail to understand why they’re ending it now. Typically seven seasons is what these shows get unless they’re a hot mess. They even let Voyager go a full seven, and I haven’t stopped yawning since January 16th, 1995. It’s not even like any of these shows is a proper season anymore, anyway. Ten episodes a year? What is this, the BBC?

The seven season model was for broadcast television. You are right that streaming is much closer to the BBC model than to the American broadcast model, which explains fewer episodes and fewer seasons.

I don’t think anyone expects 22-24 episodes anymore. It’s pretty universally known to be grueling. But 13-15 seems reasonable. When P+ trotted out Frasier “season” 12, it was over before it begun. I don’t know how they expect to develop these characters or relationships such that anyone gives nearly as much of hoot as the ensembles that came before. I think the compressed season definitely hurt Discovery. “No time for exposition, lingering shots, contemplation, or plugging plotholes. Only enough time for Burnham, so she’s the messiah and will do all the heavy lifting. There’s another apocalypse to defuse and screen time is latinum, so chop, chop.”

I hear you but it could be worse, the Marvel and Star Wars shows only get 6-8 episodes a season on Disney+ and they get much more views. This is just the new reality. Streaming doesn’t make as much money as network anymore cable shows do and there is just no mandate to make more And the episodes cost a lot more than those.

If Lower Decks was on FOX it would probably be 18-22 episodes a season and run 7+ years like most of their animated shows.

But it’s on P+ where no show ever gets more than 10 episodes and lucky to last longer than 3 seasons. That’s the streaming way.

You really think Fox, notorious for canceling shows way too soon, would have given Lower Decks 7+ seasons? You’re delusional. I’m sure you’re using The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy/American Dad, and Bob’s Burgers as your template… but…

Those are literally the only animated shows Fox has ever given more than four seasons (most get even fewer), and remember that Family Guy was originally canceled in 2002. You’re also talking about the most popular animated shows of the last 40 years.

Let’s face it: Fox would never have greenlit Lower Decks, and if they’d been somehow coerced, they’d have canned it after a few episodes.

Remember also that Star Trek never would have come back to “television” without streaming. No network wanted it. Netflix and maybe Amazon were the only interested parties, and that’s exactly why CBS All Access was created.

Also recall that LDS was a MASSIVE risk — nothing like it had ever been done for a franchise like this (a dramatic live-action franchise veering into adult comedy animation). You really think FOX would have taken a big swing like that? Really?

Lastly, as cute as LDS is, I don’t think it’s nearly as good as any of the FOX shows I listed, and I’d be surprised if anyone but P+ would have kept it going this long.

Agree to disagree.

Star Trek hasn’t had seven seasons since the Voyager days. In fact, only three of the 12 shows have had seven seasons.

The Klingons, the Borg, the Dominion, the Xindi… the Gorn. Badgy, Section 31… The older I get the more I side with the villains.

@staff – Is everything okay? It’s a little worrying we haven’t had any updates in over a week now. As much as I like lower decks I don’t want to see Tendy indefinitely.

@admins same question – Anthony, the staff, you guys OK?

Bit of a slow news cycle though, so I understand. TrekC*re also hasn’t had much to post about beyond trailers, merch and obituaries.
