Anthony and Laurie haven’t talked about Star Trek news in a while, so this week is a big news roundup. They talk about the plans for the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic-Con, a Strange New Worlds production update, the new Lower Decks clip, and the arrival of the show’s season 4 on YouTube & Pluto. They discuss comments from Michael Dorn about being offered a role on Discovery and why he said “yes” to Picard, Zachary Quinto’s thoughts on playing Spock again, James McAvoy’s revelation that he was offered a role in a J.J. Abrams Trek movie, and Scott Bakula’s opinion on the wo sides of Star Trek fandom. They round up the recent political efforts by Star Trek celebs and dig into some of the details from Laurie’s interview with Jonathan Del Arco. They lament the end of Star Trek Explorer magazine and sing the praises of Nana Visitor’s new book. The podcasters wrap up with Star Trek references in The Simpsons season premiere, a redacted section from a Jan. 6th court filing, and a Beverly Crusher cocktail.

This is Anthony Pascal and this is Laurie Elster…. ahhh.
I love listening to your podcast. I missed this intro.
For me, it’s very cathartic.
Thank you
Lovely to hear (read). Thank you so much!
Kevin Universe Mirror Spock’s new TV show is good. I enjoy it.
Huh?
Dennis is referring to Brilliant Minds, Zachary Quinto’s new show. He has a beard on it, so looks like “mirror Spock”.
Oh! OK, now I get it. :)
Ahh yes, Kevin Universe, Steven’s distant cousin!
I’ve got some film nerd-esque questions for Aaron.
Is Prodigy finished in 4K? I would guess not, but I remember the Hagemans sharing a photo from a sound-mixing session and the monitor said it was UHD.
Also, Prodigy is the only Trek animated series in 2.35 widescreen. Was this done for parity with the recent live-action shows and the movies, or was it simply to give it a more cinematic feel?
Great podcast as always!
I’m pretty sure the discarded Orion lore is what they were hinting at at some point (it was a panel, was it Star Trek Day?) a while back when they made sure to point out that there are Orions and ORE-ee-ons, the blue-skinned Orions from TAS: The Pirates of Orion. It was a mispronunciation combined with a coloring error in the animation, but I think Lower Decks is about to introduce them as the identically-spelled-but-otherwise-different ORE-ee-ons. Maybe the green and blue Orion sects have a long history of civil war or other rivalry.
That makes perfect sense! And sounds very Lower Decks-y.
Why no embedded player like before? I don’t have (nor want) a Spotify account.
We couldn’t get the Apple player to embed, but whatever was broken has been fixed. (You also don’t need a Spotify account to listen.)
@Laurie Ulster Has enough time passed that you can divulge what set piece you saw being built for Discovery that was never used? That was an intriguing tidbit.
I can’t really.. I signed an NDA!
Some day there will be a wave of cascading NDA expirations, and I live for that day.
Lets see….
Scott Bakula is a fine actor, but really didn’t have much to work with on Enterprise. The character as written was both emotionally and intellectually constipated.
Has anyone researched if there’s actually a Trekkers for Trump group? Even a fake one? I can only imagine how depressing that get out the vote rally would be.
Speaking of attractions – four or five years ago we were at my BIL’s (Boulder City, near Vegas) for the holidays. I got to talking to his (now ex) GF, Trek came up, and she mentioned her late husband was one of the demolition contractors for ST: The Experience. The hotel and Paramount both got what they wanted out of there and told the contractors to dispose of whatever was left as they saw fit. She had a storage locker full of Trek memorabilia. I got to talking to her last year and asked if she still had the locker. She was “oh, god no. A friend of mine does auctions and offered me an ungodly amount of money for it”….
So close, but yet so far.
