NYCC: ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ Streaming Movie To Debut In January 2025

The New York Comic Con Star Trek Universe panel is just wrapping up and it ended with news and a brand new poster for the Star Trek: Section 31 streaming movie.

Three months to S31

Paramount+ today announced Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere on Friday, January 24, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. The release date was announced during the Section 31 portion of the Star Trek panel at NYCC, featuring a conversation with cast members Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl and Robert Kazinsky, along with executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi. The panel also featured a video appearance from the film’s star, Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh.

In the movie, Yeoh reprises her Star Trek: Discovery role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou who joins Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet. According to the brief synopsis: “Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

Section 31 also stars Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Emmy® winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia) and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry). Miku Martineau (Kate) portrays a young Philippa Georgiou.

New teaser art for Section 31 was also unveiled during the panel.

I can’t wait

I know I’m in the minority but I can’t wait for this movie! That first trailer was diabolically bad, but I have faith that this film will be great. I just love Michelle in this role. She always looks like she’s having the time of her life!

Hopefully it will be worth it but I can’t stress how I have zero enthusiasm for this thing so far.

But I’m the hoping finished product will change my mind.

The trailer truly sucked, but if and only IF it’s written well, it will be good. I expect a lot of explosions and slow-motion walking away crap. I’ll watch from my couch, but not terribly optimistic.

I find zero reason to be optimistic about this. Both trailers were stupendously bad. To be fair the trailer for Beyond was awful and the film wasn’t that bad. But this is Secret Hideout we are dealing with so….

Oh yeah I expect this thing to be as formulaic as possible just looking at the trailer. I bet you there will be a scene by the end after the mayhem is over, someone makes a lame joke and they all laugh together.

Before the trailer I thought it would be cool they play this in a few theaters for the day so Star Trek fans can say they finally saw another Star Trek movie in theaters in under a decade.

Now, I wouldn’t waste the gas to see it in a theater.

(BTW how fcking depressing is it to know it will now literally be over a decade before another movie even comes to a theater again? The Kelvin movies that were supposed to ‘save’ Star Trek instead put the movie franchise into hibernation.)

Truly, truly disappointing. And I thought the 50th anniversary was a let down. The 60th is going to be even worse. The franchise is so underwater with regard to respect.

50th was so bad. Such a huge milestone and Paramount didn’t advertize it at all. As everyone else expects I think the 60th will be more of the same.

50th gave us the worst ‘anniversary trek’ movie by far (considering the rest were IV, VI, FC) , 60th doesn’t look like we even getting one!

I don’t think they care the 60th anniversary is coming. That’s how inept this new group feels making Star Trek. And if you can’t get another movie made 10 years after the last one failed says a lot about their lack of competence and/or motivation.

The current regime probably figures that beyond a retrospect doc and EW/Time magazine specials and a few social media posts its quite enough a celebration for all the old time fans, no need to release a butt clenching 2hr movie in outdated ‘movie theatres’ that ppl only go to check out the latest 300m superhero or Tom Cruise flick ..

Thing is if they had got a (kelvin cast) movie in production for 2026/anniversary it would actually have a chance at being at least an Into Darkness 500m hit as it’d be seen as a ‘legacy sequel’ since its been so long (10y since last one, and almost 20 since ST09), adults in their 20s now be like oh man they wuz my fave films back when I wuz a kidz along with Twilight! Chris Pine is da bomb!

Tagline for ST09 – this is not your father’s star trek

Tagline for ST4 (if even happens) – this is not your great grandfathers star trek

Haha! Good one.

The Kelvin movies are what destroyed the movie franchise in the first place. They were hoping if they sunk $200 million into these childish movies, they will become the next Transformers box office. Never got close. So instead of creating a foundation to build a solid movie franchise, it was a house of cards. They robbed us of a decade of films if they made cheaper but thoughtful movies for fans like the TOS and TNG films did (even with their flaws) instead of the overstuffed CGI popcorn fare even the teenagers stopped caring about after the second movie.

And I wouldn’t go beyond my living room to watch this Section 31 movie.

Back in the later TNG film days I used to imagine a no expense spared mega budget Trek movie (maybe going back to the TOS era maybe even Pike on the Enterprise) with all new movie cast consisting of various A list and genre stars and a hot new cool director like Bryan Singer. Basically like those 90s big budget remakes of 60s shows (Fugitive, Mission Impossible, Lost in Space, Avengers). But it didn’t seem ever likely that would or could happen, too much canon/lore to consider, and Trek being seen as primarily for nerds to risk a huge budget on a big ‘for the masses’ movie. But it did happen. So at least I got 3 of those..

I sadly expect lots of explosions and slow motion walking away crap. I’m not optimistic at all frankly.

Can’t disagree with you much dear. This looks and feels like a disaster. I too hope the movie will be better than I’m predicting at the moment, but I can’t say I’m enthused either way.

That really is an abominably awful trailer. But I’m still going to hold out hope the film is better.

I appreciate their going for a bold an unusual style with the poster. I may not love it or the bungled character arc of Emperor Georgiou, but there’s no way I miss Michelle Yeoh, let alone in anything Star Trek. Hope it’s good and appeals to a wider audience.

That’s very similar to my thoughts and feelings about it. I expect to not like it, but I‘m very happy to see them try new things and directions. And I hope it’ll be successful enough to pave the way for more experiments. I for one would love something like Indiana Jones in space. They’ve already had space archeology in TNG and LDS. I think that would have potential to be a lot of fun adventures. And I know lots of orthodox fans would hate it because it wouldn’t be “real Star Trek”. But I’m just interested in all the other stories going on in this universe. Give me some Romulan intrigue. Show me an alien society before and after first contact. Etc.

Roddenberry’s vision realized.

No that was DS9 lol

Let’s also remember that Gene didn’t really have a consistent vision.

His only vision was dollar signs $$$$$$$$$$$$

Looking forward to seeing this as i love Michelle Yeoh and i always wanted to see more of S31.

At least we getting Star Trek XIV next year

i wish alexander siddig would be in this

While I’m sure most of us who are looking forward to this are happy to get it sooner rather than later, I have to say it strikes me as a bit of a missed opportunity marketing-wise to release it on the 24th rather than exactly one week later, on the 31st.

Ha! So true

😂

I was thinking April 1st, but yours is better.

This movie looks like a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. I just hope it doesn’t kill other possible straight to streaming Star Trek movies we could get in the future. I’d LOVE a Lower Decks movie, for instance. How expensive could it be? Not much.

RT scores have largely become meaningless when it comes to actual consensus of fans and critics.

Well The Final Frontier is the lowest rated movie with a 23% rating. So finally after all these years it could have real competition. 😂

Out of all the new Trek stuff, this is the one I’m looking forward to the most. Don’t care about the promos, the time period itself, is a big draw for me. Also, Michelle Yeoh is awesome.

Krutzman and JJ running ST feels like the meathead jocks taking over the high school science club. i will give this a try, but i have low expectations. i loved how section 31 was depicted in DS9 and ENT, hell even STID. but how its been handled in DSC has been poor at best.

Not meathead jocks, more like the preppy trust-fund kids taking it over. They think what they know is cool is actually not, but only in boat shoes, pleated shorts, tucked in polo shirts, and a sweater tied around the shoulders.

Anyway, I am sure some people will like this.

What’s funny is I can imagine them actually wearing that in school. Well at least JJ Abrams lol.

I’m pretty much down with what you’re saying here, Sean. The current showrunners do not appreciate or even GET Trek. Just my opinion.

That opinion I think is shared among more people that you may realize.

I actually think that Tawny Newsome gets Trek, and Mike McMahan. And Terry Matalas did, but he left Trek for the MCU.

The rest, not so much.

I don’t consider him a showrunner, but I think Frakes gets it.

I can’t speak on Newsome or McMahan since I don’t watch Lower Decks, but Matalas completely does. People like Kurtzman and Abrams never did. Under their watch Star Trek sadly feels much less relevant today than it did in the 80s and especially 90s.

JJ has nothing to do with any Trek since Beyond. And even then it was just a producer credit.

But I can understand why one would think he was involved in it….

And thank God for that.

Yawn

It really looks like they are hoping Yeoh will carry this.

Again, she’s good but she’s not THAT good.

I’m excited to see Section 31: The Adolf Chronicles as much as I was excited to see the last JJ verse movie meaning none at all.

Like everyone else I’ll watch it but it just looks like a total disaster.

I been much more positive about NuTrek lately with Lower Decks, Prodigy and Picard season 3. But then stuff like this just brings me right back down again.

I still have no interest in this movie starring the Space Nazi. Out of all the limited resources they could’ve made, they created this instead. I really hope this isn’t a complete embarrassment; but not holding my breath. If it’s at least better than Discovery, that would be a small win I guess.
