For this special podcast, Anthony and Laurie are joined by TrekMovie’s Matt Wright and Aaron Bossig (also of the Hungry Trilobyte podcast), plus Tamia Harper of the SyFy Sistas podcast. Together, the group goes through their favorite episodes of the year from Discovery, Prodigy and Lower Decks and discusses the Roddenberry Archive “Unification” short film and what it could mean for the future. They also discuss their favorite 2024 Star Trek books, merchandise, and events as well as their own personal memorable Star Trek moments from the year. The group wraps up with a preview of Star Trek coming in 2025, like the Section 31 movie, season 3 of Strange New Worlds, the 30th anniversary of Voyager (along with the To The Journey documentary), and few other assorted highlights. There are also questions and speculation about how the pending Skydance takeover of Paramount could impact Star Trek.

Great Podcast! I do love these “Year in Review” pods. I agree with many of the highlights of 2024, as I do think 2024 was a good year for Trek overall.
I think the only think I think that could be added is calling out specific elements of the previous year that really stood out to you. You do talk about favorite episodes, but are there specific things that stood out? Acting, writing, directing, music, etc. I thought that Robert Beltran’s performance and Brent Spiner’s performance both stood out for excellence. I thought the writing of the LD finale was a high point of the series. I think someone on the pod mentioned the music that accompanied the opening minutes of “The Last Flight of the Protostar” part I was beautifully done.
Please keep up the great work! Cheers!
We got into the details a little more in the best of 2024 article for sure. And yes, that was me talking about the music in that Prodigy episode. A work of art, that opening sequence!
Happy New Year 2025, TrekMovie!
Just want to say, really appreciate you as a go-to source for all things Trek related.
Yes, even Laurie’s 1000 mentions of the soundtrack and the Delta Flyers! 🤪😀
Keep up the good work! 🖖
Thanks so much! Happy New Year! I hope you never tire of “Subspace Rhapsody” and Delta Flyers mentions, because there will always be more. Cheers! :)
Great podcast as usual. I agree 2024 was a year of ups and downs. 40 new episodes of Trek was great, but the fact that all three shows are likely done is sad.
Tony, I agree there’s potential for more Trek video games, but Paramount/Skydance should avoid trying for something “AAA”. Those budget-busting games are dragging down even successful developers, and the number of copies they’d have to sell for it to be a success would likely be unattainable.
How about partnering with an indie studio like Tribute, WayForward, DotEMU, Lizardcube or Yacht Club? I’d love a Lower Decks game done in the style of a 90s arcade brawler like TMNT.
Here’s another idea, get the developer of Balatro to do a Trek-themed update…game is a massive hit and we all know poker’s connection to TNG.
Or…a Dynasty Wariors-style musou game…with Klingons. Set it during the time of Kahless, mowing through hoards of enemies with a bat’leth; it fits so well!
Extremely enjoyable podcast!
Thank you! We had great guests!
For some weird digital reason, Shatner’s ‘Rocket Man’ popped up on the YouTube feed…
So, yeah, he’s sitting there, smoking a….. cigarette. Yeah, a cigarette. Not a joint.
And he does seem to be tripping at one point.
And he got a healthy round of applause at the end for something that was remarkably bad.
A classic!
So bad, it’s good…
Chris Elliot’s parody from Letterman is worth seeing as well!
As usual great podcast and nice to hear a lot of different voices this week.
All I will say is I thought last year was pretty good for Star Trek, if not amazing. I loved Prodigy so much (and yes have also accepted we may not get a third season) and truly symbolized the best of the show at times. Of course LDS is truly one of my favorites too although I didn’t love season 5 as I hoped but it went out amazingly. It’s also sad the show is ending too but I think there will be more at some point and it also proved most Trek fans can have a sense of humor and really gravitated to this show. It just works when it should’ve failed. McMahan should really be proud of what he made.
Discovery is a show I sometimes been very up but also very down throughout its entire five seasons. I always wanted to like it more than I did but always credited it for trying to be something different than the others. And while people are still very divided on it, it being the first new show out of the gate after over a decade did accomplish a lot and took the franchise in new directions like the far future. That alone will always seal its place in history to me.
And while I didn’t think I would like the last season (since I didn’t really like the last four that much lol) I did end up liking it even if I was once again very up and down with it. But it was probably my favorite season overall. And I really loved the finale. But I think what Tamia said about Burnham and Book being together and showing positive black love was something I didn’t think about until she said it. I’m black myself and while I don’t try to look at race much in Star Trek it obviously is a very important factor and I do think that is still important to see and acknowledge, even today.
So overall, a good year. Maybe not as strong as 2023 which for me had some of the best Trek since the 90s but still good.
As far as looking to this year, of course excited about SNW season 3 and (trying to be) cautiously optimistic about Section 31, but I ranted enough about that. And maybe Anthony is right and they will actually put the Starfleet movie in production this year. Still have my doubts (gee I wonder why?) but yeah it would be great. Also very excited for To The Journey is finally coming. That’s probably what I’m most excited about this year.
It is a little depressing we are not getting that much Star Trek as before now but as people said we did get spoiled lol. I’m always happy to have anything new. Hopefully it will be good.
When I feel like we’re about to hit a Star Trek dry spell, I remember how I fell in love with the Original Series as a kid and then there was NOTHING! It had long been canceled (and the Animated Series wasn’t on where I lived) and I had no idea movies were coming. So this is still WAY BETTER!
Just wanted to say how much I love the podcast! You two bring so much to it and really deepen my appreciation of Star Trek. No one else in my family is a fan (my biggest failure as a parent is my children are not into it, lol) so I rely on the podcast to help me process it all. This end of year wrap up with guests was particularly wonderful!
Aw, thank you! I feel your pain… my kids & husband are not into it either. And yes, we had fantastic guests for the year-end wrap-up!
Finally got around to listening… this was great.. and I love the Unification discussion. Like you guys, I did not find it an emotional hit for me, but I still loved it. This is about the limit for ‘digital acting’ for me. A digital short of sorts. One thought that I didn’t hear explicitly stated (although, I think you’d agree) that I’d like to bring up, is just how much love and care was put into this. That makes up for any ‘shortcomings’. I love how this story is told. I love the silent nature of it.. the story is evident and there is so much to interpret along with it. This feels like the technology at its best, and being used to give us a story that couldn’t otherwise be shared. That’s the kind of experimentation I like. Doing this for a series, or a movie would not work for me. But here? Absolutely.
Look at that, it’s January!! Nothing but crickets on the Trek big screen production.
Great episode, friends! Gotta ask: What made Marina Sirtis yell at Anthony? Sounds like there’s an interesting story there.
We told it (and played it!) on the podcast. It was the one where Tony did interviews at the Saturn Awards. https://trekmovie.com/2024/02/09/podcast-all-access-star-trek-goes-to-the-saturn-awards/
