Dr. Randy Pausch is a highly respected and honored professor of Computer Science and co-founder of the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He is also a Trek fan. In November Dr. Pausch was offered a role to be in the new Star Trek movie, and it all started with a very special lecture he gave two months earlier.

On a number of occasions over 2007 TrekMovie.com had to debunk rumors that Tom Cruise would appear in the new Star Trek. At one point he was to be the villain, then Pike, then just a cameo (all not going to happen), but that doesn’t mean he can’t board the Enterprise. Cruise is currently finishing up reshoots for his newest outing, the WW2 film Valkyrie, but found time to visit his pal JJ Abrams on the set of Star Trek.

JJ Abrams called into the the Adam Carolla Show on Thursday morning to talk Cloverfield and Star Trek. In the interview Abrams joked you might need Dramamine to deal with Cloverfield’s shaky cam style. He also talked about the origin of the film title. Regarding Trek he discussed why Shatner has not been cast and how he is approaching the new Star Trek film. Details and audio below.

TrekMovie.com has learned of another actor appearing in the new Star Trek film. Newcomer Jeffery Hauser was cast in the film in early October and his scenes were shot the following month. Hauser tells TrekMovie.com his is a small speaking role consisting of just few lines. Star Trek is the 23 year-old actor’s first big break in a feature film and it has turned him into a bit of a Trekkie.

Although it was never officially announced, the new Star Trek movie was originally penciled in for summer of 2008. However, director/producer JJ Abrams wanted more time and got the film moved to Christmas 2008. Some fans have wondered if the move will hurt the film’s chances at the box office, but a look at recent history proves otherwise.
Star Trek The Tour (the 50,000 square foot traveling exhibit of Star Trek sets, costumes, props, motion rides, etc) kicks off next Friday in Long Beach, CA. William Shatner is the official ambassador for the event and has already started his publicity tour. In addition a number of Trek celebs are already lined up for signings. TV Guide has put up an extended version of their interview with Karl Urban about his upcoming roles in the CBS mini-series Comanche Moon as well as the new Star Trek movie. Urban repeated to TV Guide that he was a fan of Star Trek who actively persued the the role of McCoy and he feels that the characters are faithful and the designs are like ‘high definition’ versions of the original (more below…no spoilers).
In a new interview with Metro Weekly George Takei (TOS: Sulu) talks in depth about the diversity in Star Trek. Apparently playing Dr. McCoy in Star Trek isn’t just another high profile acting job for Karl Urban. In a new interview with IGN TV promoting his role in the CBS mini-series Comanche Moon, the actor also talked Trek. Urban said that he actively pursued the role and he didn’t need to review the old shows since he has been watching Star Trek since he was a kid. .
Next Friday January 18th the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek hits screens across the country in front of Cloverfield. And if you aren’t headed to a theater, then according to Paramount you will have to wait until Monday the 21st to see it online.
