Tomorrow is the Oscars and of course there is a lot of media attention. It looks like William Shatner isn’t the only Star Trek regular who has landed a role this pilot season (see previous story). It has just been reported that Star Trek Voyager’s Seven of Nine Jeri Ryan and been cast in a ABC procedural drama Body of Evidence.
On Thursday night Star Trek producer/director JJ Abrams was named an ‘honorary Irishman’ by the US-Ireland Alliance at their annual Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film pre-Oscar party in Los Angeles. Patrick Stewart’s Jean Luc Picard was one of Starfleet Academy’s most distinguished alumni, and now the actor has been named as the head of another Academy, this one even closer to his heart. Details on that below, plus the latest updates from Sir Patrick, including some video clips.
Around the release of the Star Trek movie last May there were so many interviews with the cast and crew that it was hard to keep up. Today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences updated its list of presenters for the Academy Awards, and Star Trek’s Chris Pine is on the list (along with a Trek movie cameo actor).
It looks like we have one more set of awards to announce before the Oscars coming up this weekend, and this time it is some good news. Today the International Film Music Critics Association announced the winners of their 2009 Awards and Star Trek’s Michael Giacchino was the big winner with awards for both Up and Star Trek. Veteran makeup artist Barney Burman lead the team creating the aliens on the Star Trek movie, which were mostly done with traditional makeup and not CGI. The work garnered Burman and (two other Star Trek makeup artists) an Academy Award nomination. Burman spoke to the LA Times about the challenges of the work, excerpts below.
Star Trek Online has been out just a few weeks, but the game continues to evolve and expand. The search for Walter Koenig’s son Andrew continues. Yesterday, Walter and his wife flew to Vancouver, Canada to work on the search effort. This morning they appeared on the NBC Today show and made an emotional appeal for help. In addition, Andrew’s sister appeared on CNN and CBS. Watch all three videos below. A month ago Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences TV Hall of Fame. Video from the gala event is now online, where you can see uber-Trek fan (and Family Guy creator) Seth MacFarlane giving a loving tribute to Roddenberry. Check out the video and photos below.
Yesterday we reported that Star Trek’s Walter Koenig’s son Andrew has been missing for a week, last seen visiting friends in Vancouver, Canada. This missing person story has had a lot of coverage over the last day, including Walter going on TV, but so far there is no word on where Andrew is. Last week was Simon Pegg’s 40th birthday, and today another Trek alum can do him two better. Jeri Ryan, aka Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One aka Annika Hansen, of Star Trek Voyager, is turning 42 years young today. So TrekMovie wishes her a happy birthday, and catches up on what the former Borg babe is up to these days.

Taking a break for Trek news, there is something serious to report. Walter Koenig’s son Andrew (who also appeared in an episode of DS9) has been missing since February 14th. Friends have been trying to track him down through Facebook and Twitter, but so far he has not been spotted. He was last seen in Vancouver a week ago, details below and info on how you can help.
CBS hit show Big Bang Theory is firmly established as the nerdiest comedy on TV. The show about a group of Cal Tech scientists is rife with sci-fi references, and early this season they hit an apex when Star Trek The Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton appeared (playing a rather evil version himself) taking on the shows breakout character Sheldon. Now comes news that Sheldon’s nemesis is coming back.
Species 8472 is back. Now called the ‘Undine’, the Borg butt-kicking tripods from from fluidic space have stepped from Star Trek: Voyager to the Star Trek Online massive multiplayer game. Atari have provided us with video, images and intel reports below.
