Star Trek’s Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy, is helping promote the new Star Trek Online game (in which he does some voice work — see previous article). Last weekend Star Trek The Next Generation’s Patrick Stewart visited San Francisco for a Star Trek con and while there he gave an interview to the SF Chronicle. The actor discussed his knighthood and how Star Trek has influenced his life, noting how grateful he is for the opportunities Trek gave him. Excerpts below.
Zachary Quinto caused a bit of a tempest earlier in the week with his comments in one interview about taking a break from Star Trek. In some new interviews promoting Star Trek Online, the actor goes into more detail on his plans for the near future, and how he plans to return to Trek after doing some of his own projects. Star Trek Online has its official launch on Tuesday February 2nd, however the ‘head start’ for the game went live just minutes ago. That means that anyone who pre-ordered the game can start playing today. To help get you started, we are posting a number of tutorial videos made by our friends at the STOked podcast.
When you first launch Star Trek Online you will be treated to an introduction to game narrated by Leonard Nimoy which explains some of the back-story and ties it into the 2009 Star Trek movie. This intro was one of the last elements of the game added to the beta over last weekend, and so a few fans captured it and put it online. Check it out below.
Now the the beta test for Star Trek Online is over (see earlier report) the game is preparing for its official launch next Tuesday (and ‘head start’ this Friday). Today Cryptic posted a new ‘state of the game’, including comments dealing with bugs, some details on new content, and hints for for the first big update of the game. Atari also announced a new promotion with SyFy, including a 2-day Star Trek (TNG & ENT) marathon. Details on all that below.
The extended open beta for Star Trek Online ended Tuesday, but instead of just shutting it down, Cryptic made an event out of it. Early in the day they made an announcement of an end of beta event, then in the final moments for players found themselves facing a massive invasion of the Federation by the Klingons, and then the Borg. Last weekend Creation held an official Star Trek Convention in San Francisco. The event was headlined by Patrick Stewart and William Shatner who delighted the crowd with talk of Shakespeare, the new Star Trek movie and even pantyhose. The con also featured Trek stars such as Gary Lockwood, Armin Shimerman, Max Grodenchik, Vaughan Armstrong, and even some Klingons Chancellors (J.G. Hertzler and Robert O’Reilly). Recently the Tech Museum announced it was extended its engagement of Star Trek: The Exhibition, and today they have announced a contest where a lucky couple will get a Star Trek wedding packing to get married on the bridge of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701, no A, B, C, or D). Details below.
One of the biggest action highlights of the 2009 Star Trek movie was the ‘space jump’ sequence. This sequence actually took up a third of the effects work for ILM. A new video feature at ILM breaks down the space jump.
The open beta test for Star Trek online has proven very popular and Cryptic have now extended it one more day, so those participating can continue until tomorrow. More details below, plus a new Klingons video and a profile of a new ship: The Vigilant, a Defiant for the 25th century.
Star Trek Online launches on February 2nd. In the game you choose to play as part of Sarfleet or in the Klingon Empire, but whichever side you chose you will eventually run into some Cardassians. The official launch of Star Trek Online is less than two weeks away and to help promote the game Atari has teamed up with Del Taco who are offering collector cups, free access and an in-game bonus. If you are in the Bay Area, then this is your reminder that this weekend is a big official Star Trek convention. On hand will be the two big captains, William Shatner and Patrick Stewart, along with a number of other celebrities. And today it was just announced that Cryptic will be holding a Star Trek Online event close to the con as well . And if you are in NYC, there is a free showing of the ‘Start Trekkin’ improv show.
The engagement of Star Trek: The Exhibition at the Tech Museum in San Jose is being extended. Originally it was going to wrap up this month, but now bay area fans have until April 11th to tour around the exhibit of props, costumes, and more from 43 years of Star Trek, including the new movie. Tomorrow IDW releases their April Solicitations of comics, and they have given TrekMovie and exclusive preview of the three new Star Trek comics that are coming, including covers. This includes the announcement of a new John Byrne series "Leonard McCoy Frontier Doctor". The 67th annual Golden Globes Awards was held tonight in Los Angeles. The 2009 Star Trek movie was actually not up for any nominations, but Star Trek composer Michael Giacchino did win a Globe for his Up score. Also on hand was Star Trek’s Zoe Saldana who was one of the presenters and braved the rain for the red carpet. Photos below.

Tonight the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards, first major awards show of the season, was held at the Hollywood Palladium. The 2009 Star Trek movie was up for five awards and much of the main cast was there, but in the end they went home empty handed. We have pics of the Trek stars at the CCMAs below.

The TNT heist show Leverage came back from hiatus this week, and Star Trek Voyager’s Jeri Ryan became the latest Star Trek alumni to join in, but this time for a recurring role.
