Another sci-fi project that was funded via Kickstarter (with $221K back in 2012) is finally showing off some footage. Roberto Orci is still at work with co-writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne on the script for the next Star Trek film, slated for 2016. But he has also added a couple of new movie projects as producer to his slate. TrekMovie has confirmed reports that Orci is teaming up with long-time writing/producing partner Alex Kurtzman to reboot the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles series as well as The Mummy. BREAKING: Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness producer/director JJ Abrams is currently shooting the next Star Wars movie, but it appears he will not be shooting the one after that. Reports are coming out today that Looper director Rian Johnson is in talks to helm Star Wars: Episode VIII.
According to Deadline Hollywood, John Salzi’s not-quite-Trek, Trek inspired novel Redshirts has been picked up by cable network FX as a mini-series: John Scalzi’s 2012 comedic sci-fi novel Redshirts is headed to the small screen. FX has teamed with veteran feature producer Jon Shestack (Dan In Real Life) and producer-director Ken Kwapis (Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants) and his partner Alexandra Beattie to develop a limited series based on the book, which won the 2013 Hugo Award. Search is underway for writers to pen the adaption, with Kwapis set to direct the opening episode.
See Chase Masterson (Leeta of Deep Space Nine) like you’ve never seen her before: in a sexy, retro-futuristic science fiction thriller, R.U.R.: GENESIS. The short film, now available online, combines past, present, and future in the style of an alt-history 1969. In January, after five seasons, FOX ran the series finale of Fringe the genre show from the Star Trek team of JJ Abrams, Bryan Burk, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. And now FOX is getting back in the genre business with the team with two new shows – Almost Human from Bad Robot (starring Karl Urban) and Sleepy Hollow from K/O (featuring John Cho). Variety and other Hollywood news sources are reporting today that J.J. Abrams is directing the next Star Wars after all. There aren’t any details other than the fact Disney is close to closing the deal with Abrams. This fall Star Trek director/producer (and co-creator of Lost and Fringe) JJ Abrams has another mysterious TV show headed to NBC, Revolution. The new series is set in a post-apocalypse world where all technology has stopped working. A new clip with footage and interview clips (including Abrams and pilot director Jon Favreau) was revealed at Comic Con and is now available from NBC. Watch it below
