Do you like to Rock? If so, then we have news for you. Today Paramount and MTV Games announced a promotional partnership for the new Star Trek movie and the popular rockin’ videogame Rock Band. The promotion kicks off today and will include music track giveaways, an in-game Star Trek themed battle of the bands and a futuristic avatar contest. You can even win your own personal screening of Star Trek. [and no this is not a April fool’s joke]
First hinted at here at TrekMovie last June, Paramount have finally sealed the deal for the Trek’s ‘Supreme Court’ (Abrams, Burk, Kurtzman, Lindelof, & Orci) to move forward on a sequel to their new Star Trek, five weeks before it even opens up. The movie industry’s big trade show ‘ShoWest’ kicked off this week in Las Vegas and Paramount is showing off some new Star Trek ‘character’ posters. Plus TrekMovie has got a hold of the final Italian Star Trek poster.

This week Paramount added a couple new facets to their marketing mix, Star Trek Photobooths and Star Trek Dance Parties. You can get your photo taken and it shows up in special new mosaics on the official site for the new Star Trek movie. These booths are starting to show up at special Star Trek events and dance clubs, complete with Orion girls, and more Trek fun.

In the first week of May, JJ Abrams new Star Trek movie is set to be the first truly global opening for a Trek film, and to push that point, the film is going to get a series of star-studded gala premieres across the globe, with the first on April 7th in Sydney Australia. Paramount has just released the first details on their plans, see below for more information.
In another sign of what a big event the new Star Trek movie is, we can now add the name Kellogg’s to the growing list of big promotional partners Paramount has lined up. The first Kellogg’s products with Star Trek promotional imagery (and giveaways) have just started appearing in stores, with more expected in the future.
In November we reported that the first theatrical trailer got the notice of the mainstream media. This week the second trailer not only got noticed, it is a hit. The new Star Trek movie has yet another logo, lets hope this one is going to stick. Just this evening Paramount released a new logo image, which will presumably make its big screen debut on the new theatrical trailer coming with the Watchmen movie in exactly two weeks. Last weekend Paramount dropped some big cash on a number of Super Bowl commercials, including one for JJ Abrams Star Trek (each 30 second spot estimated by Variety to cost around $2 Million). On Monday we reported that media analysts were mostly positive about the spot and now there are three new online polls showing that the Trek ad is rating as the penultimate movie commercial of the 2009 Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is the biggest TV event of the year. Even though ratings dropped a bit from last year’s record, the game averaged around 93 million viewers, with more during the early parts of the game (when the Star Trek ad aired). In another franchise first, Paramount has purchased time to run a Star Trek commercial during this year’s Super Bowl airing February 1st on NBC. Today it was announced that Paramount CEO Brad Grey’s contract has been extended until 2014. One of Grey’s first actions after joining Paramount in 2005 was signing JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot production company to a multi-picture deal, which included Star Trek as its first big film. Abrams and Trek are now being cited as part of the reasoning for Grey’s extension.

Four months after wrapping principal photography JJ Abrams and his editors Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon have finished their first cut for Star Trek. Late last week Abrams screened this cut for studio boss Brad Grey and other big shots at Paramount and according to sources it went very well.
