Ever since news broke last week that Roberto Orci would no longer be directing the next Star Trek film, there has been a great deal of confusion, speculation, and misinformation regarding Orci’s continuing role as well as the future of the feature film franchise. We don’t profess to have all the facts here, but we’re going to try and provide some clarity, using Orci’s comments here at TrekMovie, and elsewhere on Twitter.
On Saturday we reported about the Twitter campaign #BringInRiker which aims to draft the former Number One to be the current director for Star Trek No. 3. Yesterday the actor cum director broke silence and began enthusiastically bidding for the part.
In the wake of the news that Roberto Orci would not, as had previously been announced, be directing the 13th Star Trek movie, rumors are flying across the Internets about why he left and who might replace him. One dedicated group of fans believes that with this particular captain out of his chair, we should promote the first officer to take his place.
BREAKING: Deadline Hollywood’s Mike Fleming is reporting that Roberto Orci will no longer be at the helm of the next Star Trek film: Roberto Orci is beaming off the bridge of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek 3. Rampant rumors are swirling and I’ve confirmed there is fire behind the smoke that he won’t be directing. I even hear that Edgar Wright and others are on a short list to take the job. Orci stays on the project as producer, I’ve heard. The film is intended to be Orci’s debut as a film director, as well as his first solo project after parting with long-time writing and producing partner Alex Kurtzman. This story is very fluid at the moment, and TrekMovie will bring you more details as we get them. UPDATE: Variety is also reporting that Orci is no longer directing.
