Nicholas Meyer didn’t know anything about Star Trek before he was hired as the director for the second film in the franchise – which is still considered by most to be the best. TrekMovie talked to Meyer about taking on Star Trek II, his hopes for a director’s cut on Blu-ray, and what he though of the homage to Wrath of Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.

Today Paramount announced a new 4-disc Blu-ray set for the two JJ Abrams’ Trek features – 2009’s Star Trek in HD and the IMAX version of 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness . Also included are digital versions, all the previously released bonus material (including some only available via some retailers) and new bonus material. Season 6 is arguably the best season of TNG. The writers that we associate with TNG’s better episodes were all present, the production staff had TNG down cold, the visual effects were at their peak technologically, and the episodes covered a diverse group of subjects and genres. Read on to see how the season looks re-mastered and details of the treasure trove of deleted scenes the CBS Digital team were able to find, available June 24th in North America.
Along with the boxed set of Season 6, the single disc release of ”Chain of Command”, the critically acclaimed two-part episode that deals with torture, prisoner’s rights, and handling the change of leadership under a new commanding officer, will also be available to purchase on June 24 in the USA. As with other single-disc releases, both parts have been edited together to make one 90-minute TV movie.
So we’ve finally come to Season 4 of Enterprise, often considered the best of the series. It is a bittersweet ending, going out on a high note, but it’s sad to think that this is the last TV series of the entire franchise, canceled after only four seasons. What we have in this final season is generally very good, we are treated to excellent multi-part story arcs about the Eugenics Wars, Vulcans, Andorians, Orions, and Klingons (oh my!) plus the mirror universe is revisited one last time. Star Trek Enterprise Season 4 is due out at the end of this month, April 29th (to be exact). With that time fast approaching CBS has now officially sent out finalized details of the Blu-ray discs of this highly anticipated season, widely considered the best season of the series. We have new excellent sounding documentaries. “In Conversation: Writing Star Trek Enterprise,” an exclusive, 90-minute writing staff reunion special, which includes Brannon Braga, Mike Sussman, André Bormanis, David Goodman, Chris Black, Phyllis Strong, and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. As with the previous seasons there is also a new four-part documentary “Before Her Time: Decommissioning Enterprise,” which charts the last season of Enterprise. TrekCore has found the trailers for the Season 6 release of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray and the single-disc release that accompanies it, “Chain of Command”, due out in June. As many of you may remember, Paramount Home Video and Bad Robot pulled quite the shenanigans on us consumers when it came time to release Star Trek Intro Darkness on home video. Extras were made retailer (and e-tailer) exclusive, if you wanted a commentary the only way to get that was to get it from iTunes, other special features were only available via Xbox Live, and so on. So most people didn’t get to see the deleted scenes. Well Trekcore has vigilantly assembled all the sources of deleted scenes they can get their hands on. This includes the famous “why Carol Markus has a British accent” scene, as well as the meeting of Kirk and Lucille Harewood (the young girl saved by Khan’s blood early in the movie) during the ending commemoration ceremony. We have come to Season 3 in the Blu-ray release schedule, this is the season many feel Enterprise became a show worth watching. Season 3 contains the season long arc of the Xindi threat. It also contains some great one-shot stories outside of the main Xindi narrative such as “Twilight” and “Similitude”, and a couple of pretty lame ones too, such as “Extinction” which is called “one of the singularly most embarrassing episodes of Star Trek I’ve been involved with” by Brannon Braga in the documentary on the set. This really seems to be the day of Enterprise news. After today’s earlier Tweet from Brannon Braga about the Writer’s Reunion special feature that will be on Season 4, CBS Home Entertainment quietly put up their trailer for the Season 4 Blu-ray release. As we’ve come to expect from the Blu-ray bonus material team of Roger Lay, Jr. and Robert Meyer Burnett there is a new 3-part documentary charting the change in tone and direction that took place for Season 3 called “In a Time of War”. They also have an interesting sounding new feature called “Temporal Cold War: Declassified” which as the name implies is about the temporal cold war, it contains interviews with the writers and producers about what else might have gone on with the temporal cold war arc if Season 3 hadn’t changed directions. There are now a few more details of the Season 5 and Unification single-disc Blu-ray releases thanks to a new press release from CBS Home Entertainment today. Season 5’s special features include a new season 5 documentary titled “Requiem: A Remembrance of Star Trek: The Next Generation.” This two-part documentary explores the making of the series’ fifth season and focuses on the effect the passing of creator Gene Roddenberry on the show. Also exciting for fans of TNG’s music is the newest roundtable discussion documentary: “In Conversation: The Music of Star Trek: The Next Generation” which features TNG composers Ron Jones, Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chattaway. Both are due out in the US next month, November 19th to be exact. See the full details after the break.
CBS has released the trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise coming to Blu-ray in January 2014. Season 3 represents a big tonal shift for Enterprise, forced into action when a mysterious weapon leaves a swath of devastation across the surface of the Earth at the end of Season 2, Archer and crew now set out to find the previously unknown people called the Xindi and stop them from launching their final doomsday weapon. To coincide with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness on Blu-ray, CBS is offering up a new “best of” TOS Blu-ray disc release. This includes various “prime universe” episodes that are related to the characters or aliens seen in Into Darkness in some way. It naturally includes “Space Seed” for the introduction of Khan and “The Cage” for a look at Pike as captain, and more. There is a little bit of new content on this disc, there are new video introductions recorded by Rod Roddenberry.
While we expected Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 to be the next up on the Blu-ray slate, we weren’t sure if CBS would do a single-disc release this time, since the Season 5/6 cliffhanger of “Time’s Arrow” is hardly a fan favorite. The most logical choice, that many had been speculating, is the two-part 25th anniversary celebration, “Unification”, featuring the return of original Trek legend Leonard Nimoy and his character Spock. We don’t have full details yet, but there is new partial information about both releases. Both are expected to be available on November 19th for the US and Canada.
