Star Trek Beyond Lukewarm at the Box Office

A long and profitable run for Star Trek Beyond at the domestic box office is in question as the film only took in $24.7 million in its second week in release, second to Jason Bourne’s $59.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Beyond barely edged out newly-released Bad Moms to secure the second place spot, but saw its earnings drop 58.2% from its opening weekend.

Four days before the release of Star Trek Beyond, Paramount Pictures, Skydance, and Bad Robot announced that “Star Trek 4″would be made with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as George Kirk. However, J.J. Abrams’s comments on July 20th at the red carpet premiere of Beyond in San Diego cast doubt on the status of the film.

Paramount is doubling down on the rebooted Trek movie franchise – spurring lazy entertainment reporters around the world to reuse clichés about “boldly going.” The reboot actors – Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, etc. – originally signed contracts committing them to just three pictures, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount and Spyglass Entertainment are in the process of signing them on for a fourth installment.
