Short Treks started as a spin off to Discovery, therefore Netflix was the licensee, initially they decided to not carry the first season of Short Treks when they were being released monthly. All four of the first season of Short Treks were then added to Netflix on January 17, 2019, just before the premiere of the second season of parent series – Star Trek: Discovery.

It has not been announced how the second season of episodes will be handled. One episode is a prequel to Picard which has been licensed by Amazon for international audiences, so it is expected this episode will end up on Amazon, rather than Netflix.
