MOVIE NEWS

Comic Movies: DC’s Green Lantern Aiming to Shoot Early Spring 2009; Marvel Locked in at Paramount and Spider-Man 4 Casting News
Producer Donald De Line revealed to FirstShowing that a new draft of "The Green Lantern" has been submitted to the studio and while nothing has been confirmed yet, they’re "gearing up to start shooting early spring".  Meanwhile over at Marvel, the studio has extended its current contract with Paramount Pictures for the studio’s next five self-financed films:"Iron Man 2" (May 7, 2010), "Thor" (July 16, 2010), "The First Avenger: Captain America" (May 6, 2011), "The Avengers" (July 15, 2011) and "Iron Man 3" (TBA). Capping this week’s comic-book movie news, when asked by MTV about whether she’d be returning for "Spider Man 4", Kirsten Dunst responded: "I’m in".  When pressed, however, the actress changed her tone a bit, saying "I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…"

Transformers 2 Action Scenes Shot in IMAX + LaBeouf Injured Again
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"
director Michael Bay is filming at least three action sequences from the upcoming sequel using IMAX cameras, Variety reported.  Since Christopher Nolan used the cameras to dramatic effect in "The Dark Knight", other directors have expressed their interest in filming sequences in the format, including Jon Favreau for "Iron Man 2" and DJ Caruso for "Y: The Last Man".  In other ‘Transformers 2′ news, star Shia LaBeouf has once again injured himself.  The actor required stitches above his eyebrow after he sustained a cut from a prop on the set of the film.  The actor went right back to work, and the injury isn’t expected to to be an issue.

Favreau Talks Iron Man 2 + Iron Man Blu-ray Breaks Record
During a web chat with Los Angeles Times readers, "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau gave out a few hints about the film’s sequel.  First off, Favreau told readers not to expect Mandarin to be in the movie at all, indicating that the writers were experimenting with trying different villains from the comics.  When asked his thoughts about the potential for using a female villain–such as Madam Masque–Favreau strongly hinted that he’d be interested in a female villain.  Favreau also said that the second film will deal with how Tony Stark’s celebrity is affected by his "coming out" at the end of the first movie and Favreau would like to deal with Tony’s alcoholism, but in a way where the entire story isn’t entirely based on it: "I don’t think we’ll ever do the Leaving Las Vegas version, but it will be dealt with." And finally, he mentioned that the second film will lead into the "Avengers" movie.  Meanwhile, while on the Howard Stern Show Thursday, Favreau revealed that in just its first two days of release, the Blu-ray edition of "Iron Man" has become the format’s best-selling title.  Official numbers have not yet been released.  Hear the interview here. Watchmen Running Time, New Trailer News, and Sequel Talk
Select press in Los Angeles were treated to twenty-five minutes of footage from "Watchmen".  At the screening, it was announced that the film currently has a running time of 2 hours and 43 minutes and director Zack Snyder doesn’t expect it to get much shorter.  Snyder also revealed that he would not be involved with a sequel/prequel if Warner Bros. decided to make one and that the next movie trailer will be attached to "Quantum of Solace", which hits theaters on November 14, 2008.  You can read a complete account of the screened footage over at Collider, where you can also listen to what Zack Snyder had to say at the event (Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV).  SCI FI Wire has also put up a report on the screening which you can read at this link"Watchmen" hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

Harrison Ford Talks Indy 5
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"
star Harrison Ford talked to the LA Times blog Hero Complex about the possibility of a fifth installment in the franchise:

“Really, [another sequel] comes from the ethos, from the ether. It’s natural. It’s a way of nature, of course, success breed opportunities … also we don’t stay as closely in contact as have in the last year, that’s part of it.”

Ford adds that Lucas already has a basic plot idea, which he calls "crazy but great". "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" hits DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def on October 14th.

Tom Rothman Talks James Cameron’s Avatar, and Potential for Franchise
20th Century Fox co-chairman, Tom Rothman, spoke with IESB about the studios 2009 film "Avatar", calling it "the coolest shit I’ve ever seen".  Rothman also discussed the film’s franchise potential:

If it does well, yes, absolutely, in terms of an arena a whole new world. But for us, it isn’t any of that, it isn’t even the technology, it isn’t even the look and the world all of which is the coolest shit I’ve ever seen, it isn’t even any of that, it’s that it’s a great story. It’s just a great story. You read the story and you are gripped by every page, it’s just a great, original story with tremendously, classic emotional value.

CW developing ‘The Graysons’ – pre-Batman Robin Series
With "Smallville" nearing an end, The CW is looking to the future.  The network has given the green light to "The Graysons" from "Smallville" executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, who’ll be teaming with McG to produce the pilot, based on Batman’s sidekick Robin.  The duo say they have an original take on the character, one which will follow the drama and adventures of Dick "DJ" Grayson and his family during his pre-Batman days.

Fringe Given Full Season Order
Thanks to impressive ratings results, Fox has given a full-season order to the new JJ Abrams/Roberto Orci/Alex Kurtzman drama "Fringe".  The back-nine order brings the first season to a full 22-episodes.  "Fringe" is the first new series of the fall season to receive a full-season order.  Through four aired episodes, the show has averaged 10.43M viewers and a 4.2 rating among the key adults 18-49 demo.  Watch a promo for next week’s episode below:

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles In Danger of Being Canceled?
Meanwhile, poor ratings are to blame for the recent rumors that have been spreading on the Internet that Fox is close to canceling the second-year series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"i09 reached out to Fox for a comment and got the following response: "The rumors are all speculative and never fact checked with the network or studio." Fox has ordered only 13 episodes of the show and the rep added that production on those 13 episodes continues and Fox has not yet made a decision about whether to order the remaining nine episodes of the season. So far this season, the show has averaged 5.79M viewers and a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49 through four aired episodes. Last season, it was the fall’s highest-rated new drama and averaged a heftier 9.50M viewers and a 3.9 rating in the key demo.

SCI FI Adds Two More Reality Shows to Lineup
Last week we reported that SCI FI had green lit a new archeological documentary series entitled "RelicQuest".  Now the network has announced two new reality shows, both scheduled to begin airing this November.  Courtesy i09:

That rumor about the network changing its name to reflect its increasingly non-Sci-Fi based programming (which truthfully comes up every few months), doesn’t seem too far fetched huh?

Tapping Ready For More Stargate Movies; Won’t Be In Spinoff Universe
Amanda Tapping told SCI FI Wire that despite executive-producing and starring in the SCI FI Channel series "Sanctuary"–which premiered last night and airs Friday nights at 10pm–she’ll still be doing work on the various Stargate programs.  Tapping says she just "did the final episode of ‘Atlantis’" and will reprise her role as Carter in an upcoming straight-to-DVD Atlantis movie.

"I know nothing about it," Tapping said. "I can honestly tell you that. I was asked if I could make myself available, and I said, ‘Of course I would.’ Stargate is home. I may be off at university right now getting my Ph.D. in craziness, but I will always go home for Thanksgiving dinner at Stargate."

Tapping added that rumor has it production on the third DVD Stargate movie will begin late spring/early summer of next year and that they’ll be shooting ‘SG-1′ and ‘Atlantis’ movies at the same time.  Tapping also revealed that she would not be appearing in the upcoming third Stargate TV series ‘Universe’: "I think if I were, people would go, ‘Enough with the Carter!’"

1. Gabriel Bell - October 4, 2008

I was all set to check out “Life on Mars,” but when they dropped Colm Meaney, they lost me.

Anyone else completely bored by “The Sarah Connor Chronicles?” I am trying to love it… but, boy, it is just kind of blah.

2. Enterprise - October 4, 2008

Yeah, it needs a kick in the pants. Everyone is way too NICE on Sarah Connor. Aren’t they supposed to be tough?

BTW Clone Wars was decent.

3. RedShark - October 4, 2008

(My first comment on TrekMovie)
I’m excited about everything! Iron Man 2, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Stargate Atlantis, Lost…holy cow, I can’t wait. Now I have to go finish Season 2 of Lost.

4. Gabriel Bell - October 4, 2008

Countdown Excitement Meter (on a scale of 1 to 10):
Star Trek – 10
Dollhouse – 9
Watchman – 9
Lost – 8

Not enough hours in the day to get through all this great genre content.

5. sean - October 4, 2008

Sorry, but I’ve been loving TSCC this season. They’ve kept the pace up quite nicely. The networks are too fast to push the cancellation button these days. Give the shows a chance for pete’s sake!

I’ve enjoyed the first few episodes of Heroes, but I’m worried they don’t know where they’re taking the story. It just feels like they might be backing themselves into a corner.

Clone Wars was…bleh. Too many trips to that particular well.

6. Enterprise - October 4, 2008

Heroes is terrible. It’s overhyped. There’s not one likable person on the series.

Prison Break has been better than Sarah Connor this year.

7. Izbot - October 4, 2008

A *sequel* to Blade Runner?! Stupid, stupid, stupid. Blade Runner is like Chinatown. A sequel would be like The Two Jakes — a pointless exercise.

Can anyone tell me why it’s titled “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”? She’s like the least interesting character on the show. Actually, with the exception of the fembot “Cameron” (hate that name — what’s next? a Star Trek ship called the U.S.S. Roddenberry?) pretty much everyone on the show is pretty dull.At least the fembot is *supposed* to be devoid of personality.

8. Sloan47 - October 4, 2008

I really would like to see a Knights of the Old Republic era Star Wars movie/series rather than the same old material. Clone Wars was just awful IMO.

9. Izbot - October 4, 2008

I keep hoping that if we all concentrate real hard George Lucas will stop raping his earlier successes. Jesus Christ, man! Please do what Bill Gates has done — retire, give away a large percentage of your billions and make stupid commercials co-starring Jerry Seinfeld. Just stop working!

10. samrock83 - October 4, 2008

Sequel to BLADE RUNNER!?!?!?!?!?

WTF?!?!?!!?!?!

11. Xai - October 4, 2008

Methinks there will be a comic superhero oversaturation point in the next couple years.

And “The Graysons”……you gotta be kidding me..

12. Enterprise - October 4, 2008

Uh, Star Wars has been great because GL has stuck with it.

Oh, and Blade Runner is overrated. Why do people like that crap? The movie put me to sleep.

13. Robo86 - October 4, 2008

A minor (and unfortunate) note, Fringe was the second new series to get a full season order. The first was…sigh…90210.

I must say that a sequel to Watchmen seems like a really bad and pointless idea. I haven’t yet read the graphic novel but I know the basic story and how can you possibly continue on after that?

Also, the Graysons sounds like another terrible idea. Dick Grayson doesn’t become Robin until after his family is killed.

14. SPB - October 4, 2008

#12 – Enterprise

For the love of God, please tell me you’re joking about everything you just said.

15. Izbot - October 4, 2008

13. Robo86 –
“I must say that a sequel to Watchmen seems like a really bad and pointless idea. I haven’t yet read the graphic novel but I know the basic story and how can you possibly continue on after that?”

As someone who has read and loved that graphic novel for 20 years I couldn’t agree more. Any attempt at a sequel would be pointless and couldn’t possibly deliver like the original. Another bad idea.

12. Enterprise –
You just keep on believing both of those viewpoints. Very brave of you.

16. Capt. Fred - October 4, 2008

Who’s idea was it to put crap on the SciFi channel like “Ghost Hunters” and “ECW”?

17. Izbot - October 4, 2008

16. Capt. Fred –
“Who’s idea was it to put crap on the SciFi channel like “Ghost Hunters” and “ECW”?”

Mark my words, SciFi will be rebranded sometime in the near future. It will no longer be what it sought to be — it has morphed into something else like someone in one of their station identification commercial break thingies.

Remember that Spike was once TNN (The Nashville Network), what was once CourtTV is now some similar caught-on-tape x-treme video bs channel. SciFi will become The Wrestling Network or some such crap.

Just a matter of time.

18. Thorny - October 4, 2008

“Iron Man 2″ is actually due May 7, 2010, isn’t it?

“Fringe” this week was pretty good. Better than last week by a wide margin.

I’ve given up on Sarah Conner. Still TiVo-ing it for watching if I get really, really, bored, but its not prime watching for me anymore.

“Heroes” is okay, but the plot is falling deep into X-Files-like impenetrability.

“Pushing Daisies” had a bizarre season premiere, even for “Pushing Daisies” that was over the top.

“Chuck” is the only holdover from last season that has held up after the strike and summer hiatus. The season premiere was terrific!

19. Charles Trotter - October 4, 2008

While Indy 4 wasn’t bad, I don’t think it was good enough to warrant a fifth film. There wasn’t really anything great about it, nothing that really warranted its existence, to tell the truth. Indiana Jones is a franchise which should have been left alone after Last Crusade; since making a fourth film turned out not to be such a hot idea, a fifth movie will likely be an even worse idea.

As for Iron Man being the best-selling Blu-ray title, my congrats to those involved in the movie. That said, this news isn’t saying much since Blu-ray sales are not the greatest anyway (nor should they be, really). In any case, the record might be broken in a few weeks when Indy 4 is released and both records will be smashed when The Dark Knight is released this December.

By the way, I’m glad there’s nothing to the Blade Runner sequel news (turns out the writers were working on it years ago but ditched it). It would have most likely ruined everything about the first film. A remake, on the other hand — a movie that creates its own conventions using the original as inspiration — would be interesting if done right. But a sequel shouldn’t even be considered; you just can’t follow-up a movie like Blade Runner, especially not the final cut, which is absolute perfection.

20. Gorn Captain - October 4, 2008

If Terminator wasn’t going up against Monday Night Football, it may get better ratings. I’m always switching between the game and the show!

21. Andy Patterson - October 4, 2008

Kenneth Branagh directing the Thor movie is interesting news and choice. Certainly not one I would have thought of but it makes sense. I really hope they do this right. The pathos and melo-drama of the early Kirby comics, with the feaux King’s english, has got to be the way to go. I hope they’re true to all that. Costume and all. That could be too cool!

22. Prometheus3737 - October 4, 2008

I find it amusing that on a Star Trek news website Michelle Forbes is identified as being Admiral Cain from BSG and not as Ro Laren from TNG. But relating to actual article, I’m pretty sure that an Indy 5 and a Blade Runner 2 would suck hardcore.

23. Izbot - October 4, 2008

21. Andy Patterson – October 4, 2008
“The pathos and melo-drama of the early Kirby comics, with the feaux King’s english, has got to be the way to go. I hope they’re true to all that. Costume and all. That could be too cool!”

That was my hope before they made that travesty Fantastic Four. It worked best in the timeframe it was originally born in. Had someone like Zach Snyder done it, using the original comics frame-for-frame and altering very little, it may have been something fresh and interesting yet also nostalgic and respectful.

But no, this is 21st century America and nothing succeeds without pandering to the fart joke crowd, the you-go-girl crowd, et al. All these great old comics have to be updated and deconstructed for today’s audience.

I hope they get it right, though. It’s not impossible to do.

24. Izbot - October 4, 2008

22. Prometheus3737 –
“I find it amusing that on a Star Trek news website Michelle Forbes is identified as being Admiral Cain from BSG and not as Ro Laren from TNG.”

That was my initial response, too!

25. Andy Patterson - October 4, 2008

23

“That was my hope before they made that travesty Fantastic Four. It worked best in the timeframe it was originally born in”

Mine too. And I agree. But, The Incredibles came along and kind of stole everything it could have been. Perid feel and all. It could have been so great! I still can’t believe Brad Bird knows/knew nothing of the Marvel world. Incredibly hard boast to pay respect to. But yes,….we’ll see.

“…fart joke crowd, the you-go-girl crowd, et al”

And totally agree with that.

26. MORN SPEAKS - October 4, 2008

Stephen Colbert for President!

I am MORN SPEAKS and I approve this message

27. Closettrekker - October 4, 2008

#12—”Uh, Star Wars has been great because GL has stuck with it. ”

Stuck with it? More like wore out its welcome.

Lucas hasn’t told a really good story in a long time, IMO. It’s almost as if he has ‘tarnished’ his legacy somewhat.

There was a time when his tentpole franchises (SW and Indy) were a gold standard.

Don’t get me wrong. I love ‘Raiders’ and I love the first two installments of the original SW trilogy. ‘Temple Of Doom’ was a step down, and so was ‘Jedi’ (although I personally believe that movie is still pretty good, despite the Ewoks).

I think that Lucas should have ended the Indiana Jones series with ‘The Last Crusade’, although Indy IV wasn’t nearly as disappointing as Episode I-III of SW.

His most recent additions to those franchises made alot of money, but IMO, sacrificed a little bit of ‘legacy’ in doing so.

But that’s just my opinion.

I’ve never been a huge ‘Blade Runner’ fan (although think it’s a good movie), but I never really felt as though it was “overrated”…maybe in some circles, I suppose.

#11—I really enjoyed ‘The Dark Knight’, but I’m already comic book movie-logged…

Enough already.

28. Closettrekker - October 4, 2008

#20—Even though MNF is not what it used to be, since the “game of the week” is now a Sunday night event (which by the way, was a long overdue move by the networks and the NFL—flex-scheduling is great!), I agree. Putting any fall series in that time slot is going to kill the 18-49 ratings demographic right off the bat.

It seems much more logical to me to show something in that timeslot which appeals to a totally different demographic, instead of settling for MNF’s leftovers. Putting something like that up against any NFL game is like putting it on death row.

29. jimj - October 4, 2008

I’m surprised no one has started bitching about Kevin Spacey coming back (rumor only, I know) as Lex Luthor. But honestly, I thought he was the best part of the last movie. Just give him something new to do and don’t make him the main “bad guy”. Kind of a partner, like in Superman 2, but be more ingenous with it. He did great….just be sure to get rid of that awful Lois Lane portrayal (and the annoyng poster child for Asthma Announymous). Supes himself wasn’t bad, but i think they need the right director to bring out a bit more forcefulness from him (al la Christopher Reeve style). Just my humble opinions, however.

30. Enterprise - October 5, 2008

The Star Wars Clone Wars series has more substance than the last three Star Trek series,

31. Sloan47 - October 5, 2008

#30

I would place ANY season of DS9 above Clone Wars. Like all of the modern Star Wars, it fell far, far short. Lucas seriously needs to retire and let someone else take over the franchise.

32. Enc - October 5, 2008

you know. I saw Sanctuary.
I was not impressed. I think I heard someone say the word original at one point. I dont think so.
Ive seen…
Hell Boy
Beauty and the Beast
Special Unit 2

this latest production offered nothing new to raise the bar. it was a fine enough show. but it came in at par and passed. Bui I didnt see anything over the top that would be needed for its first ep to seperate itself from the other storys i listed above and make me want to come back time and again.
Sanctary C+

Clone Wars ill skip and just wait for the dvd

im not going to pretend to knoew anything about the batman universe. but this grayson thing. what are they going to do? follow the adventurees of the family as crime fighters, going from city to city w/ the circus? maybe they can get the ca gov to do a cameo and do a health and fitness ep. ;)

Eagle Eye fell flat and dare i say formulaic.
im not even list what this one borrows from
(but I did enjoy myself for the most part)

Knight Rider continues to NOT impress me.

33. AJ - October 5, 2008

Charles/19:

IJ4, despite being unmemorable, made bucketloads of cash, so IJ5 is a logical choice for Paramount.

jimj/29:

Lex Luthor in a Superman film? Finally! After barely seeing the character in Smallville and his barely being mentioned in the Donner/Singer films, I think it’s about time he got some screentime vs. old Supes.

BRING BACK ZOD

34. Third Remata'Klan - October 5, 2008

I love Terminator: TSCC! It actually has the distinction of being the ONLY non-Trek TV series that I have picked up from the very first airing of its very first episode in a decade, and I’ve stuck with it. It’s good!

I can’t believe they’re thinking cancellation…!

35. Capt Mike from the Terran Empire - October 5, 2008

I also Love the TSCC!.. It’s a good show and they need to give it a full season and get the chariters more to do then just blow things up. They need more humanity and more action as well. It has a lot of potentional and i think it will do much better. Since there makeing so many Supeheroes movies I do hope they make The Greatest American Hero. That was a good show and i hope they make it a great movie. Now. About that Star Trek Trailer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

36. Green-Blooded-Bastard - October 5, 2008

Lucas built up this great Star Wars universe, then rode in and razed it to the ground with garbage like Episodes 1,2, and 3, Clone Wars, and pretty much everything else he touches. If he wants to sell toys, get into the toy business and let someone else step in and write and direct Star Wars movies. There is a wealth of material to draw from, and off the top of my head someone should make the Timothy Zahn Heir trilogy before the original cast gets elderly. It could still be done and it’s a brilliant story.

Greysons – feh
Sarah Connor Chronicles – feh (though Summer Glau is a little hottie)

ugh, there’s too much garbage to list here, I’ll just giggle over what I’m anticipating:

Start Trek – hooRAH!
Watchmen – Cant wait!
Ironman, Thor, Captain America, Avengers – Better not suck!

37. Thorny - October 5, 2008

By the way, why is “Iron Man” a 2-disc Blu Ray set?

Wasn’t the Blu-Ray mafia endlessly telling us BD should win the battle because it had so much more capacity per disc than HD-DVD? What’s the point of the giant capacity if the studios can’t be bothered to use it?

38. sean - October 5, 2008

#6

Prison Break?!!? Now I know you’re joking. That show should have been cancelled in Year 2. It started off as an interesting premise and has now officially turned into an absurdist romp. How that stays on the air and shows like Journeyman get cancelled is beyond me.

39. Closettrekker - October 5, 2008

#30—-I wouldn’t know, since I’ve lost too much interest in the franchise to even care! Maybe if Lucas hadn’t ruined it with Episodes I-III…

And it wouldn’t take much for it to showcase more substance than Berman-era Trek, IMO.

40. sean - October 5, 2008

As for GL sticking with Star Wars – the man should have had Star Wars taken away from him over a decade ago. The ‘Special Editions’ were really the beginning of the end for any fond feelings I had for that franchise. The prequels were a mess, and we’re all far too kind to Episode III just because it wasn’t as abysmal as its predecessors. Then to add insult to injury, he had to go and frak with Indiana Jones. It’s like the man is determiend to screw up anything decent he ever made.

I simply can’t accept any argument for Indy IV not being ‘that bad’. The bottom line is that calling it ‘not that bad’ is excusing a piss-poor storyline and laughable ‘acting’ just because it wasn’t an Ed Wood movie. The fact of the matter is, Ed Wood deserves more respect for what he managed to create on a shoestring than what George Lucas has been phoning in for the last decade with almost unlimited resources at his disposal. Indy IV either should have been spectacular or never been made, period. There was no reason to go back to the well if you didn’t have something new and exciting to offer. So Lucas either A)simply doesn’t care anymore, and just wants a money buffer or B)has completely lost touch with the average moviegoer and is no longer qualified to judge what constitutes a good storyline. Probably a combination of both, from what I can see.

41. Closettrekker - October 5, 2008

#39—Pretty solid remarks, Sean. I agree.

42. Izbot - October 5, 2008

30. Enterprise –
“The Star Wars Clone Wars series has more substance than the last three Star Trek series,”

That’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard. Clone Wars looks like a video game. That you would propose it has ‘more substance’ than the last three mega-million dollar movies (which comprise *one half* of the entire series) is terribly sad.

Critics roundly hated Clone Wars (109 out of 135 critics gave it negative reviews according to RottenTomatoes.com). Not even Phantom Menace suffered those numbers. The ratio of crap to gold in the official Star Wars Universe is now tipping the scale into the crap arena.

I get a bit…passionate, shall we say, when this subject comes up. Ha. I’ve just been disappointed time and time again with what GL has done in the last 10 years. At one time I thought nonsense like the Ewok movie were the exception to the rule and not the norm. Now we all know Eps IV & V were the exceptions, sadly.

Comparing George Lucas to Ed Wood. Ballsy. And I agree. As more time passes and George cluelessly blunders his way through his current movies the more I can’t help but wonder how much of his original successes were just luck? Just some fluke? He now seems stubborn, myopic and completely oblivious to how or what made his earlier films smash hits.

Another comparrison would be Lucas and Tarrantino. Both owe their biggest successes to distilling cool bits and pieces culled from other cheaply-made sources (serials, pulps and samurai films for Lucas, exploitation, blaxploitation and kung fu movies for Tarrantino). As time passes and they both keep making films using the same template both directors’ works decline in quality.

I’m waiting for Lucas to make a sequel or prequel to THX-1138. Y’know, just to be thorough.

41. Izbot Enterprise said clone wars had more substance than the last 3 Star Trek shows not the last 3 star wars movies. It obviously is not true, in either case, and the comment is still very sad.

Ah, so he did.

It is still sad. Given Enterprise’s other comments here I wonder what exactly about Star Trek they find appealing?

50. fakesteve - October 5, 2008

Sean, I am totally with you here…
But GL came to Hollywood in a time when Coppola ruled, and young author oriented cinema seemed possible… in the afterglow of the nouvelle vague in france with Truffaut and Goddard. That was the spirit in which he made THX and Graffitti. After Star Wars became so much more then a movie, and enough money money to buy 90% of Marin County fell in his lap he got kind of sidetracked I guess ;)

51. Energize - October 5, 2008

Journeyman was terrible? Quantum Leap rip off. Lost is the best sci fi on TV right now. Everything else is pretty much crap.

52. Energize - October 5, 2008

Oh and GL has better characters and writing than Tarentino,. Honestly, can that guy create a decent character? His movies are so hard to sit through.

55. Energize - October 5, 2008

Also, DS9 had more CG battles than all of the SW prequels.

56. Spock with a Crowbar - October 5, 2008

And to speak to Indy 5 and even 6,

Why not? Didn’t we see this coming? It will be just like Star Wars. We’ll end up with three classics and three turkeys to choose from. Maybe even an insultingly juvenile animated movie.

(sigh) I’ll see them of course, but probably only once. Then, I’ll go home and watch Raiders for the 30th+ time.

57. Spock with a Crowbar - October 5, 2008

60. Izbot - October 5, 2008

Energize/Enterprise –
You sure are shoveling a lot of shite on this thread. There’s no need for you to continually make inflamatory proclamations then get personal when others react to it (oh, and logging in under different names to make it look like others agree with you isn’t fooling anyone).

As for what you call us “slamming” George Lucas when you dismissively call a film like Blade Runner “crap”, it would be nice to read a coherent explanation from you on why you have these opinions. So far you’ve just been running in here, blurting out some pretty eyebrow-raising statements and then running off again. You can’t really believe you can just make a statement like “Clone Wars is better than the last three Trek series” and expect us to just sit here and say, “I guess he’s right”.

61. Izbot - October 5, 2008

I might even point out that the simply awful-looking Taco Bell commercial “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” is getting much better reviews than “Clone Wars” has.

But chances are you liked that movie just as much when you saw it with mom and dad on Friday.

63. Enterprise - October 5, 2008

The only reason the Clone Wars movie got terrible reviews was because the reviwers failed to realize that it was essentially a “pilot” for the cartoon series. It was never meant to be another movie in the Star Wars series.

Also, the movie was made for 8 million and it’s made over 60 million worldwide. It did better than Speed Racer and X Files.

But hey, I guess mainstream reviewers would rather see a talking dog movie. More power to them.

64. Enterprise - October 5, 2008

Blade Runner IS crap, though. It bombed when it was released in theaters, and the only reason it still struggles on is because some fans have been brainwashed into thinking it’s a good movie when it’s not.

65. sean - October 5, 2008

#64

Sorry my friend, but Blade Runner is as far from crap as they come. Maybe you don’t like it, but you aren’t going to find many people to back you up on that. It’s considered one of the best films of all time, not just a pivotal piece of SciFi. ‘The Clone Wars’ will likely be forgotten just as quickly as Episode II and the first cartoon version (which was a whole lot better than the current version, let me tell you).

As far as George Lucas goes, I think I was pretty specific as to the issues I have with the man. It’s backed up by his poor film output. You’re free to like or dislike what you like, but how about a little exposition to go with that criticism. Everything you’ve said in this thread has amounted to ‘it’s boring’ ‘it’s crap’ ‘it’s terrible’ ‘it’s overhyped’. And when you’re talking about a film (Blade Runner) that is so highly acclaimed, you’ve got to expect people will want more than ‘it’s crap’ as an explanation.

66. Izbot - October 5, 2008

64. Enterprise –
“Blade Runner IS crap, though. It bombed when it was released in theaters, and the only reason it still struggles on is because some fans have been brainwashed into thinking it’s a good movie when it’s not.”

Wow, good point. I’m convinced. “Tell me something more than ‘Blade Runner is crap’,” I say and you respond with “Blade Runner IS crap”. Very nice. I guess I’m brainwashed and didn’t even know it (but, to be fair, brain-washed people usually aren’t aware they’ve been brainwashed — thanks for the heads up).

Clone Wars did better than Speed Racer? That’s not saying much. Speed Racer was unwatchable and Clone Wars already had a huge built-in audience of kids and people who apparently aren’t that discriminating in their tastes. And actually Clone Wars has made about $35 million domestically in 8 weeks time — the same amount Eagle Eye made in a single weekend. Chump change in Hollywood terms.

“The only reason the Clone Wars movie got terrible reviews was because the reviwers failed to realize that it was essentially a “pilot” for the cartoon series. It was never meant to be another movie in the Star Wars series.”

That’s funny because almost every review I read mentioned the fact “that it was essentially a ‘pilot’ for the cartoon series.” I guess the only reason “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” is getting better reviews is the reviewers have failed to see it’s similarities to Taco Bell commercials. Or they, too, are brain-washed.

Brilliant rebuttal. I’ll ask it again, what, if anything, do you like about Star Trek? I’m getting the impression you are just trolling around here looking to start fights and don’t even care for Star Trek or sci fi in general.

Can you answer that? What Star Trek do you like? And why?

70. BND - October 5, 2008

Why, Izbot, tha’ Clone Wars, which I’ve never seen and likely never will, has so much more substance than…

Actually I’ve recently realized that I’ve outgrown Star Wars. That’s not being a shot across tha’ bow, just a personal preferance as I adored it greatly as a child.

Now, I also watched all tha’ repeats o’ Trek as a child, but I still have interest in it. Either that or I’ve been trippin’ oot on me armpit fumes fur tha’ last few months thinking this wuz a Car Tech site and wonderin’ why no one can give me advice on how ta’ adjust me belt timing or what ta’ really expect when I place tha’ airbag sensor in me front seat and jump up and down in traffic?

67 – I have been a fan of sci fi ever since I saw Star Wars and Star Trek. I still think Trek and Wars are the two best sci fi franchises around, and I think it’s pretty sad the state of fandom today seems to slam every Wars or Trek movie before they even come out, and in many cases, slam movies after they have come out to good box office and word of mouth.

75. John Pemble - October 5, 2008

I like being able to watch new SciFi shows via iTunes so I do not have to screw with the cable company. Star Wars Clone Wars TV is not like the original trilogy or the new trilogy. It’s not compelling TV. It’s weekly Star Wars cool backstories. Star Wars Clone Wars TV are the adventures you imigianed as a kid with your action figures visualised with animated charactes and big sound. I am happy to see this. It makes me optimistic about some more future SciFi TV adventures. Of course I should also point out that I’m very big into new BSG and now that it’s going to be back on iTunes for the end of 4th season, providing Universal and iTunes don’t having another falling out.

76. Enterprise - October 5, 2008

Yeah, itunes is awesome. I got all of New BSG and Lost already. I got the cables so i can watch them through my TV set. It’s really cool.

If you came to me as a kid and told me as an adult I’d be watching weekly Star Wars cartoons on TV, I’d have said you were joking, but I’m really glad there is always new Star Wars. I was a Star Wars fan when there was NOTHING after Return of the Jedi. All we had were Ewok movies. Those were dark days.

77. Denise de Arman - October 5, 2008

78. Izbot - October 5, 2008

Well as to that sad state of fandom you refer to, you’re certainly contributing by slamming as much as you have around here. In this thread alone you’ve made sweeping slams against DS9, VOY, ENT, Blade Runner, Heroes, Journeyman, and Sarah Conner. Oh and Dr. Who on another current thread (not to mention a swipe at non-genre director Tarrantino just because he was brought up in an analogy). Many of the shows you’ve attacked have also had good word of mouth and enjoyed quite a bit of popularlity. Not seeing anything positive from you here — just sniping.

I’m here mostly because I am excited about the new Trek movie coming out. I’m not slamming it or dismissing it out of hand before seeing it. And I enjoy a good discussion where all sides are bringing often-contrary-to-my-held opinions but they are at least giving reasons for those opinions. Please attempt to give us reasons for why you don’t care for something, otherwise your statements come accross as absolutes — anyone not agreeing with you must be brainwashed or nuts.

Do that more often and you won’t get the kind of reactions you’ve enjoyed receiving today.

79. Enterprise - October 5, 2008

78 – Dude, I really don’t care about your opinion. Have a nice day.

80. The Gorn Identity - October 5, 2008

I will never tire of superhero movies. As long as Marvel Studios continues with the quality of IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK they should keep making these movies for years to come. As for those of you who are complaining about superhero movies, no one is forcing you to go see them.

(I know, I’m a n00b)

82. Izbot - October 5, 2008

81. Capt. Fred –
“What is Blade Runner? (I know, I’m a n00b)”

“Blade Runner” is a film from 1982 starring Harrison Ford that is largely considered one of the best sci fi films of all time. It was based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and directed by Ridley Scott (who also directed “Alien”, “Legend”, “Gladiator”, “Black Hawk Down”, “American Gangster” and many other memorable movies).

If you haven’t seen it you should take a look. It’s a timeless classic. I can’t give it high enough praise — it’s one of my personal favorite films of any genre.

83. Abdaspill - October 5, 2008

Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show friggin’ rules, just like the Star Wars prequels did. The vast majority of people who watched the prequels loved them, it’s just that the small minority of people who didn’t like them are the ones who post regularly on the Internet. Proof that people loved the prequels is all the damn MONEY THEY MADE. And KIDS (who have always been the target audience of Star Wars) LOVED the prequels. When they all get older and start posting more to webites and such in the next few years, you’ll hear a lot more people say they liked the prequels.

84. Buckaroohawk - October 5, 2008

One of my professors in college gave me his opinion of “Blade Runner” and I believe it encapsulates the film perfectly. He said…

“Blade Runner is an amazing film, but it’s a lousy movie.”

Make of that little nugget of wisdom what you will. Enjoy!

85. Izbot - October 5, 2008

83. Abdaspill –

86. Closettrekker - October 5, 2008

#83—I think the prequels made alot of money due to the hype and anticipation of those of us who loved the original trilogy as much as anything else. Let’s be honest. We were all going to give it a shot based upon reputation alone. Even after the ‘WTF’ reaction immediately following the first prequel, we still anticipated a rebound. I think many of us were simply numb with disbelief. The ‘rebound’ never came, and now we can look back at the whole thing with more objective eyes.

I don’t think there is enough in the prequels to stand the test of time anywhere near as well as ‘Star Wars’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, and even ‘Return Of The Jedi’.

The original trilogy just had a chemistry that wasn’t there in the prequels. The story was far too predictable, contrite, and lacked any sense of ‘jeopardy’ for the important characters. Much of the acting (particularly with Hayden Christiansen) was terrible. I remember people laughing at some of the action-sequences, whereas in the originals—there were actual cheers!

The original 3 films were not just enjoyed by kids, but adults as well. It was a great story!

Even if some of what you say is true, those ‘kids’ will grow up, see it (the prequels) again, and say, “Wow. This is awful”.

You’re not giving those kids enough credit.

Those movies are not even in the same league with their predecessors. Lucas hurt the ‘legacy ‘of that franchise, IMO.

The only reason Indy IV didn’t disappoint me was because–after seeing what Luca did with the SW prequels—my expectations for another installment of Indy were pretty low.

Lucas is not the filmmaker he was 25 years ago, and we probably shouldn’t have expected him to be.

90. MONGO - October 6, 2008

Mongo also have one thing more to say:

Glad people like Star Wars Prequel show. But Mongo like IV-V-VI. Mongo think it be neat if George Lucas mans write story about thing after VI. Use voice of actors from originals and do CGI movies. And have lead up to live action movie with Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy, and robots. Show what happen to empire, rebellion, if new Sith try make comeback. And show characters as older people who try lead galaxy and guide new generation of Jedi.

93. Daoud - October 7, 2008

#92, Yep, I’d rather watch “The Organas” or “The Skywalkers” instead of “The Graysons”. “Life on Tatooine” over “Life on Mars” any day.

Also, how about a variety show “Live from Jabba’s Palace”. Mmmm, gold bikinis. Cast Hugh Hefner’s 3 housegirls. He needs the money. Maybe they could get the Wookiees to reprise their Star Wars Christmas Special celebration.

#17 I think SciFi will soon be renamed the “EDGE” channel. “Get your Edge on”. “The Edge, at Night”. “The Edge of Reason”, etc. “Edge-a-cational television”.

94. TrekMadeMeWonder - October 7, 2008

27. Closettrekker

Lucas may have had a little foresight in the recent SW movies.

95. Closettrekker - October 9, 2008

#94—I think “foresight” was a big problem in the recent SW films, but not so much for Lucas, but for the audience.

There was no ‘jeopardy’ for anyone but secondary characters, and those characters just weren’t that interesting. We already knew the end of the story, and the ‘how’ was rather…well, disappointing.

I think a key element in Bad Robot’s ‘Star Trek’ which seperates it from what ailed Lucas’ prequel trilogy is the fact that it’s not really a ‘prequel’ at all. Although it is described as “an origin story”, the very plot (from the little we know of it) involves the potential for some of what we know, or even everything significant we know, being rendered irrelevant. It is the potential “alternate timeline” which makes the “future” less certain, and provides just enough ‘jeopardy’ to keep things interesting for the primary characters.

It is therefore not so limited to just ‘how’ and ‘why’. It should include a good bit of ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘who’, and ‘what’ as well…
