Paramount Teaming With Namco For Star Trek (Movie Universe) Game + To Be Released Q1 2013

Following this morning’s announcement of Hasbro joining the Star Trek family, there is more big news int he world of Star Trek. Paramount and Bandai Namco have announced they are teaming up for the "Star Trek" video game tied to the new movie universe. A release date has also been set for next year. More details below.

Star Trek co-op game coming Q1 2013 – Distributed by Namco

Last summer at the E3 show, Paramount revealed their upcoming "Star Trek" co-op console game set in the new movie universe. The game for XBox 360 and Playstation 3 is set in between the 2009 Star Trek film and the sequel. Players choose to play as Kirk or Spock and can collaborate with a friend. The game features an original storyline which promises to "continues the adventure of iconic characters Kirk and Spock as they work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy."

The game won a number of accolades at E3, and impressed TrekMovie.com (see TrekMovie first impressions).

Now Paramount has set a release date of Q1 2013 for the game, coming before the May 17th release date of the Star Trek sequel currently in production. And they have also announced that game publishing giant Bandai Namco has been brought on board to distribute the title. This is great news for this game which is already getting great buzz.

Here is the trailer released last summer.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES AND NAMCO BANDAI TEAM UP FOR
STAR TREK VIDEO GAME

Studio chooses industry leader to co-publish and distribute highly anticipated video game inspired by the new Star Trek film, set to ship the first quarter of 2013 prior to new movie.

SAN JOSE, Calif., (February 10, 2012) – Paramount Pictures and leading video game publisher and developer NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. today announced the two companies have signed a deal for NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. to co-publish and distribute the highly anticipated Star Trek video game worldwide during the first quarter of 2013 for all major home consoles and PC.

The action-packed combat game is set to launch the first quarter of 2013 prior to the May 17th theatrical release of the next Star Trek installment from director and producer J.J. Abrams. The game, through a license with CBS Consumer Products, is based on a stand-alone storyline that continues the adventure of iconic characters Kirk and Spock as they work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy.

“With our NAMCO BANDAI partners leading the distribution effort, we are confident that we will meet an overwhelming demand to get this exciting console experience into the hands of gamers and Star Trek fans worldwide”, commented LeeAnne Stables, Paramount Pictures Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Partnerships and head of the studio’s video game unit. Stables continued, “The positive response from our initial unveiling at E3 last year was unprecedented, and we are fortunate to have the highest level of production and creative talent on our team that will bring this incredible game out to market next year.”

“Star Trek continues to be one of the most beloved entertainment properties around the world, and NAMCO BANDAI Games America is extremely excited to be teaming up with Paramount Pictures to create the definitive Star Trek interactive experience,” said Carlson Choi, VP of Marketing for NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.

Paramount unveiled the Star Trek video game in pre-alpha phase at 2011’s Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) and won the praise of critics including the prestigious “Most Valuable Game” awards from Official Xbox Magazine and PlayStation: The Official Magazine, and was included as one of CNN’s Top 5 Games of E3 2011 list. The Star Trek video game also won additional praise with an exclusive trailer that debuted during Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s keynote address at its annual E3 press conference.

The Star Trek video game is being developed by Ontario-based developer Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, The Darkness II) with production being overseen by Paramount Creative Executive Brian Miller. “Working with Paramount Pictures and Digital Extremes reinforces NAMCO BANDAI Games’ commitment of expanding its portfolio to include Triple ‘A’ Western developed games in addition to its popular and well-respected Japanese Franchises,” said Carlson Choi. “Digital Extremes’ attention to detail, and the collaboration with Paramount Pictures and the team at Bad Robot Interactive will create an authenticity that is sure to thrill Star Trek fans and gamers alike.”

The game’s original story is being penned by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk in collaboration with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, writers and producers for the upcoming Star Trek film. Built from the ground up as the ultimate co-op experience, the Star Trek video game lets players control both Kirk and Spock in a sweeping journey of epic proportions across unexplored planets and enemy battleships with the latest 23rd century weapons and gear. Kirk and Spock’s complementary personalities result in the most fully realized and varied co-op experiences for this console generation.

I still enjoy Star Trek Legacy. They need to make a “Call Of Duty” type of game. Phasers instead of machine guns.

Star Trek legacy was only good for person vs person combat. The story mode sucked. It just did not impress. Star Fleet Command 3 was a lot better when it came to actual game play and what you could do with the ship. If you took Star Fleet command 3 and made it so you could fly in all three dimensions and gave it the same graphics as legacy, it would pwn legacy.

This game looks really exciting. I hope you get to fly the ship too similar to legacy a couple of times. Or even a person vs person game play with the ship.

I agree Bruce, a Star Trek Call of Duty would be awesome.

Aww, man. I was hoping it would come out this year. Oh well. At least it will be before the movie.

awesome! love the new phaser rifle look! these have been featured in the (canon) IDW Star Trek ‘Ongoing’ comics too.

As late as it is, no point in bringing it out this year, I guess.

Looking forward to it, wish it was coming this Summer!

This game is a tie-in to the sequel, so it makes sense to release it just before the movie, not a year before.

Having said that, I’m skeptical that this game will be released at all. Not sure how well it will sell. This isn’t “Star Wars”. “Star Trek” has an UNPROVEN track record when it comes to video game sales.

@boborci – many thanks for collaborating on this. It is projects like this, the IDW comics and hopefully a new animated Trek that will keep the franchise alive and growing.

so wait how are there already reviews, and stickers that say 2011 if we wont even get the game until 2013? does this seem to anyone else like it was supposed to be out last year and something happened? i’m at work so i apologize i had to skim through article

also doesn’t halo have a weapon similar to the one spock has in his hands?
is it romulan??

thank you anthony also doesnt spocks weapon look familiar?

I don’t know if someone has mentioned this or not, but there was a ‘Call of Duty’ style Trek game made. Elite Force and Elite Force 2. Both great games!

As an aside, I’m not digging these ads popping up at the bottom of the images. I understand TrekMovie needs ad revenue to survive, it’s just a little intrusive is all. :)

No love for the Wii . . ?

wii is a joke

How about the PC?

15 – By Q1 2013 the Wii will be practically dead. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up getting a WiiU release though.

“I still enjoy Star Trek Legacy. They need to make a “Call Of Duty” type of game. Phasers instead of machine guns.”

To me Star Trek means morality tales, exploration and camaraderie, not all out war. Simply plugging in “phasers” where “normal” guns would be does not a Star Trek game make.

Probably also the reason why I prefer Trek on the small screen.

We need A Final Unity 2 or Elite Force 3 ;)

Hope you all likey!

As far as I’m concerned, “Judgment Rites” is still the best Trek game ever made. Maybe it’s because it was more oriented towards exploration and problem-solving than just ‘Phew-Phew!’ shoot ’em ups.

Yes, would love an Elite Force 3!

I really liked DS9’s “The Fallen”, although it was let down by not having Avery Brooks and Colm Meaney aboard.

#21. boborci…

Mr. Bob Orci … are Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto involved in this project? … There was one article in THR and then in tgdaily.com saying they were officially involved … and then there was a correction in the article of tgdaily saying it was a rumor … after all what really happens? … is a secret, too? …

I’m thinking that’s because of the Wii U coming out. They may want to wait to port it over to that platform.

Awww come on! That was to be my fix for this year… It would of been nice to of released the game this year, in place of the movie, THEN Have the movie released next year.

25. Could they afford Pine and Quinto?

Oh can’t wait for this release! STOL was ok, but hope this next one tops STOL.

Looks cool!

I hope it’s like Mass Effect. That game is a action RPG game with a great story. I would like to see more McCoy too. At least let him run around with you. Give him funny lines. See Mordin of Masss Effect 2. Mordin’s a riot. Let’s hope it comes out early in 2013. So if it’s great, we can play the daylights out of it. And add some DLC (downloadable content) a month later.

Leonard H. McCoy’s not in the video game because he’s a doctor, dammit, not a goomba.

@ 21, 22

Vultan, Judgment Rites was a great game. Got the special edition with Gene Roddenberry’s interviews.

I wish somebody would do something with the aborted “Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury.” (Being produced by Interplay same company that did Judgment Rites.) They recorded the voices of the original cast for it! And D.C. Fontana wrote the story. Link.

What do you say Bob Orci?

No PC? Sadly then, I have no interest.

@basement blogger: did you preorder ME3 collector’s edition? will be playing that like crazy until trek comes out.
@anthony, thanks for the update. i’ve been going crazy about any new game news!

this game has so much buzz around it, i dont think most trek fans get how good of a sign that is. i wouldnt even compare it to sto, legacy or any of the previous games. those honors are a pretty big deal, especially to be in pre alpha stages. expect something epic, that’s all i’ll say. (glad consoles are getting some love, its about time)

@24 I loved DS9’s The Fallen… Dare I say, it may be the best Star Trek game to date. It was the closest to the series… although I also loved Star Trek: The 25th Anniversary on Nintendo.

They need to put this on theWii too.

@ 38:

and on the PC!

PC? The announcement says “consoles and PC”

But is it for the Wii?

Looks really fun! I haven’t played screen games since my sibs and I got Atari for Christmas in the late seventies. Now I’m thinking we might trade in the Wii for Xbox if my kids will play this game with me.

Looks outstanding!! Must…get…game…

people on some of the other boards are speculating that the villian for this is the Cardassians,as one of the ships at the 40 second mark has a cardassian feel to its look.
I never thought about this before myself, but how cool would it be to have a star trek movie with the Cardassians as the Villian.

Not much into modern gaming anymore, but the space jump pic is amazing art! New wallpaper for me!

44….i’d actually love that! cardassians were cooler than they were given credit for. funny enough, i could see cumberbatch being an amazingly evil cardassian. his voice is just so…perfect.

There won’t be Cardassians (or any other non-TOS races or characters, for that matter) in the game!

SHEESH!

Cardassians might be a TOS Species in this timeline , they are Indirectly Mentioned in the 2009 Star Trek Movie, so First contact might have been made.

47 and you know this how? and like 48 said Cardassians are indirectly mentioned in Trek XI when Uhura ordered a Cardassian Sunrise.

So in all likelyhood the Cardasians are known about by starfleet in the JJ verse.

Also a cardassian could easily have been played by either Benicio Del Torro or Bendict.

And having them as the villians would be new to the trek movies.

I agree with you. Secret of Vulcan Fury should be salvaged somehow. By now the game would likely have to be rebuilt from scratch, but at least the recordings could be used.
