by TrekMovie.com Staff , Filed under: Great Links, Humor , trackback

Ever made up your own dialog while watching Star Trek with the sound off? Well, that is the premise of a a new viral video going around this week, that even made it onto G4’s Attack of the Show. Let’s just hope that this isn’t what Star Trek The Next Generation looks like to lip readers.

Star Trek: Happy in Paraguay

from Day Job Orchestra

NOTE: Video contains VERY adult language

1. Hat Rick - December 4, 2009

I can safely say that, no, I have never made up my own dialogue in quite the manner contemplated…..

2. Capt. Roykirk - December 4, 2009

um, what?

3. NCC-73515 - December 4, 2009

You should watch the TNG videos of gazorra and GeneralGrin ;)

4. Skippy2k - December 4, 2009

Wow…. thats NICE! lol

5. mjmjr91 - December 4, 2009

6. Anthony L. - December 4, 2009

INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!

7. Daniel Broadway - December 4, 2009

That made as much sense as Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.

8. CmdrR - December 4, 2009

Too funny.
I’m not sure “VERY adult language” is accurate phrasing. How about “lots of cussin’ and not very mature.”

9. Commander Crooner - December 4, 2009

“I have a sheep doing roofing over at my house”

10. AJ - December 4, 2009

Very similar idea to this:

11. Rastaman - December 4, 2009

Haha. Love it! More please …

12. bill hiro - December 4, 2009

I wish I had that kind of time to waste.

13. Ensign RedShirt - December 4, 2009

This is what TNG looks like in the post-Nero timeline…

I thought it was funny.

14. Kilo-Three-Zero - December 4, 2009

Oh, DJO. Methinks the only dub that ever made sense was Data Krupa.

15. Ant - December 4, 2009

Want some Apple Juce?

16. davidfuchs - December 4, 2009

DJO is a perfect example of a good idea that goes to some odd points. Lots of it is good… a lot of it is random swears.

17. Magicdan - December 4, 2009

Oh my God! This is funny man!

I can’t wait to watch it in “enhanced” mode later!

Very funny, weither your sober or not.

More please!

18. Sean - December 4, 2009

DJO has been doing these kinds of vids for quite some time, they’re AWESOME. Look up the one called “Ritardo” (YouTube). “I had this dream last Thursday… WHAT UP BUDDY?” “I FEEL SO HORNY HORNY!”

19. somethoughts - December 4, 2009

too funny, now do the tos movies and star trek 2009 please

20. Mr. Delicious - December 4, 2009

This passes for humor? I want those 3min. back.

21. SChaos1701 - December 4, 2009

Sweet…I love these guys.

22. Ceti Alpha 5 - December 4, 2009

Slow day huh?

23. AnotherQ - December 5, 2009

Wow!!

That’s all I can say is…Wow!

Nope. Haven’t stopped.
Still laughing….

24. Zebonka - December 5, 2009

I haven’t laughed much at any of these yet. I’m sure that says more about me of course, I know plenty of people who love them to bits. I guess I prefer the clever re-edits by that … other guy. Can’t remember his name, there was one of Worf and O’Brien sitting down to dinner with each other. Hilarious.

25. John Gill - December 5, 2009

That Picard voice is pretty good

26. Anthony L. - December 5, 2009

The scene they did with Riker, Data, and Troi in the turbolift is far far better than this one.

27. malformed - December 5, 2009

These guys have been doing this for years. They are a goldmine of fun

28. crazydaystrom - December 5, 2009

L……O…….L!!!!!!

29. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - December 5, 2009

Ok. I seen it and I wish I could go back in time and stop my self from seeing it.

30. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

I’ve decided I need to start castrating anyone who ever uses the phrase “I want those X minutes of my life back”.

31. vorta23492392932939230 - December 5, 2009

Yes, I did this when I was 15 in 1990…

(its the first one)

32. Allen Williams - December 5, 2009

#7 i would have to disagree. By the end of the episode i knew what they were saying. By the end of this i was still like WTF????

33. Lore - December 5, 2009

Thats the best one since the porn message to Vger from TMP.

34. the doc - December 5, 2009

It’s very sad our society has nose dived to this level of depravity. It is sad people enjoy it. I turned this off after about 4 seconds. Society is almost devoid of morals anymore. Very sad.

35. EvilSean - December 5, 2009

Check out Data Krupa by DJO. Excellent.

36. Dan - December 5, 2009

@ #33

It’s funny to all kids of different people, and not to others.

We are all different, we should get used to it. It’s what makes us unique!

We could move to a more repressed nation where they don’t allow this sort of thing.

China, Saudi Arabia, etc. Their governments don’t think it’s funny either.

I think it’s very funny and want more.

37. Selor Kiith - December 5, 2009

What about a big cup of humor doc? Or did your Humor glands got cut out as a child?

It was funny :D I like that kind of things, just like the SiW (Sinnlos im Weltraum (Senseless in Space), all in german) Videos! xD

38. Cobalt 1365 - December 5, 2009

I could have done without all the swearing, but overall, very funny!
The lips were synced beautifully, that’s what impressed me the most

39. Kev - December 5, 2009

how the hell did he manage to perfectly lip sync all that?

kill geordi!

40. WVTreker - December 5, 2009

Calling this stupid is an understatement. Must be nice to have that much time to waste.

41. the doc - December 5, 2009

Selor, humor can be done tastefully. I have laughed at a lot of things that had absolutely no swearing. Where are your morality glands?

42. the doc - December 5, 2009

Dan, we can also be a nation where morals are forgotten and complacency is the rule. Wait a minute, we are that nation! Let me think; so was the Roman Empire. We all know what happened to them!

43. Eli - December 5, 2009

Umm… What? Did that make sense to anyone? Because It didn’t to me… And I love a good spoof video… I guess this one’s missing the “good”…

44. garen - December 5, 2009

great job. very well done. Same technique the filmmakers used in TWOK for Spock and Saavik to converse in their Vulcan language. The scene was originally shot in english and then they insert the Vulcan language in post.

45. garen - December 5, 2009

doc…how is this devoid of morals?! and how is it sad? its really hard to believe anyone could get so upset about something so silly and small.

You seriously…seriously…need to lighten up!

relax, man. relax.

46. SChaos1701 - December 5, 2009

I think some of you need to get off your sanctimonious soap boxes and get a sense of humor.

47. Kevin Rubio - December 5, 2009

That actually made sense. Should I be worried?

48. Frank - December 5, 2009

Sounds like more techno-babel to me. Nothing wrong with it.

49. CmdrR - December 5, 2009

It’s not as clever as “What’s Up, Tigerlily?” but it’s good for a dumb laugh.

50. p.e.b. - December 5, 2009

um really random but according to that weird voyager episode, wasnt voyager’s future destined to be trapped in the delta quadrant? (episode with the kyrian museum of heritage) so technically here should never have been an admiral janeway to come back and save the crew…right? can someone explain this to me? oh and jj abrams please cast kerri russel as carol marcus in he sequel!

51. the doc - December 5, 2009

It’s called the slippery slope. 10 years ago, there would have been a much bigger complaint about this. 15 years ago, this wouldn’t even have a chance of being on a site like this. Today, we have slid so greatly, there barely is any complaint. The more you slide, the more difficult it is to stop.

There is the challenge. I have seen funny bits that are clean that completely makes this non-funny. It is easier to do humor that is filthy. But, it is much more satisfying and edifying to do humor that is not filthy. We’ve lost our moral way. We are lazy. We don’t try. We do things the easy way instead of the moral, honorable way. You just have to look at society to see that.

But you know, society is so lost that it won’t see what it has become until it is too late. Now that is sad. This video parody is just a small example of how much society has slid.

52. Matt404 - December 5, 2009

The lip syncing was pretty impressive on this!

@the doc: I’ve never understood what “bad words” have to do with morality. They’re just collections of letters like any other word. The only difference is that someone along the way decided they were “bad” and we shouldn’t say them. Who knows what reasons they had. What exactly makes one word “bad” and others OK? And what does any of that have to do with being moral or not?

53. Justin Olson - December 5, 2009

@51 the doc:

Take note — the “slippery slope” is a logical fallacy, and those who use it in an argument always assume that an adverse chain of events will occur, but never offer any proof of a causal chain… they just assert — claiming that A leads to B, B leads to C, C leads to D and so on, until they finally claim that A leads to Z.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/Locke2007/Funny%20Pictures/spock-illogical.png

54. Quatlo - December 5, 2009

Pretty decent work, they have good Worf and Picard voicing. The shredding stuff is pretty cool too, the Santana one pretty much started it however many years ago. And don’t forget the farting preacher number 5, a classic.

55. That One Guy - December 5, 2009

51 and 52,

“Bad words” are also subject to cultures. I took a trip to England a few years ago with my high school band. We stayed with host families for 2 weeks. In that time, I remember the little kids saying all sorts of thing right in front of their parents that I would normally find horrific, and would certainly never expect from an American child. Several days later, we were playing Mario Kart on their Wii, I went off the road and uttered the word “crap.”

Everyone in the room was horrified.

Me and my fellow band geek were confused, since all the words THEY had said were infinitely worse to us, but “crap” to them was beyond profane.

This video is just a bit of dumb humor, like most of collegehumor.com, where I first saw it. The dubbing in itself, however, is extremely impressive. It was a good, stupid laugh that I myself enjoyed. Finals are 3 days away, and I like not thinking for a few minutes.

56. ryanhuyton - December 5, 2009

#51 the doc: I suggest that you get off your “moral high horse” before you fall off. It’s my experience that people who dispense “moral values” are more likely to make themselves into hypocrites because they make the same mistakes they blame others for. I don’t mean to berate you, it’s just that it is easy to condemn people who enjoy this kind of humor because you are a very sensitve and easily offended person. But what you find “offensive” others find funny. And it’s quite possible (and probable) that at least once in your life you said something that offended someone else. And as someone said earlier, it’s a grey area when deciding which words are “good” and which are “bad”. I’m pretty sure I made the same mistake at least a few times in my life. It’s all just a matter of “live and let live”.

And finally, I really thought this clip was really funny and well done. They were able to sync the words with the movements of the actors’ mouths.
I hope we get to see more.

57. rogue_alice - December 5, 2009

#34 – “turned this off after about 4 seconds.”

So, with a disclaimer of “Video contains VERY adult language” you felt compelled to click the link??

58. Dan S. - December 5, 2009

Personally, I don’t find these nearly as funny as JAndrew’s TNG “edits,”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7jbP1_H9sA&feature=related

59. the doc - December 5, 2009

Morally, there are no gray areas. It is either moral or immoral.

As far as clicking the link, I didn’t see the disclaimer about the adult language before clicking it. I wish I had.

About the slippery slope, you just have to see how our society has gotten progressively worse since we have let more and more immorality into the general society over the last 40 or 50 years. The United States used to be considered a very moral place. Today, it is far from that. It has been a gradual, progressive movement from one immoral inclusion (or event) to the next which has led to the moral depravity of this country. No wonder we are in such trouble today! People are blind to it because they are caught up in it. This is NOT something Gene Roddenberry, the very reason we are talking here in this chat, would be proud of.

60. Anthony Pascale - December 5, 2009

The Doc

This site caters to all Trekkies. Not all articles are for everyone, so you dont have to read/watch everything we put up. When something deserves a warning, we put that up too.

There really is nothing to ‘complain’ about.

Don’t like it, dont watch it. But we will not let those who dont want to see something dictate what EVERYONE should be exposed to.

And if you have a problem with that, I am sorry, i am sure there are other sites out there that will be more to your taste

61. the doc - December 5, 2009

Anthony, are you saying I can’t express my opinion but everyone else who has in this thread can?

62. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

the doc, what you’re saying is patently false. In the past, people participated in all the so-called sins that are prevalent today: swearing, drug use, unsanctioned sex, prostitution, gambling, etc. The only difference is that they used to hide it. So, our current state of affairs is not less moral, only less hypocritical.

(I watch a fair amount of historical documentaries, and I am always amazed at the prevalence of all the “sins” in what today are referred to as the “golden era”. The funny thing is, back then, the same held true: there were moralists who decried the current morals, pointing to a “golden era”, but that “golden era” was always just as bad. In other words: selective memory is the meat of those inclined towards an attitude of moral superiority.

63. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

Anyway, the whole point of this clip is the lip-synching and absurdity of the language, not to guffaw at the swearing — which is not that extreme anyway.

64. the doc - December 5, 2009

4 8 15 16 23 42 (why those numbers, I wonder), there were far more honorable people than there are today. Those that did the sins (as you call them), hid it. Today, it is everywhere influencing people (as this video does). It is far easier to get caught up in all of this because it is everywhere for everyone to see. So, there are more people doing it because it appears more acceptable because it is out in the open.

65. TomBot3000 - December 5, 2009

Technology allows you to now “see” that everything under the sun has been done, therefore harder to disbelieve. Regardless, potty humor is inherently lazy when repetitious and void of artistry. I don’t think it’s inclusion or exclusion in these lip sync word salads would matter much, it was pretty dull stuff over the long haul.

66. the doc - December 5, 2009

Oh, that’s a Lost reference. LOL.

67. ryanhuyton - December 5, 2009

OH DOC, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! You’ve already made your point. You are OFFENDED by the contents in this article. You don’t like this article, SO WHY BOTHER WHINING ABOUT IT? And by the way, since you have appointed yourself as a MORAL SUPREMECIST, I wonder how you would feel if someone was dictating to you what you should like and what you shouldn’t. Somehow you wouldn’t like it so much. And by the way, there are PLENTY of HONORABLE people in this world. True, people like Tiger Woods get all the attention, but there are many others, like doctors, scientists, astronauts, soldiers and philantropists trying to make the world a better place. Maybe you are too narrowminded to notice, or with your inflated opinion of yourself no one can possibly measure up. And by the way, while I don’t know Anthony myself, I trust him to be an honorable man, just like others on this site. Anthony has shown a lot of tolerance towards fans on this site (myself included), when he could just as easily shut down the comments section, or even the site altogether.

68. the doc - December 5, 2009

Ryan, that’s the point. I am not a moral supremest. It is not my opinion that I am stating. I am just a person, like you and everyone else on here. I do make mistakes. I am not condemning anyone. I can’t. But, there is an Authority that everyone in here and everyone that has ever lived will have to answer to one day. It is that Authority that so many today want to reject, even though the evidence for that Authority is everywhere you look. The video in this thread is a direct rejection of the Authority.

Yes, there are plenty of honorable people in this world, some that visit and post on this site. But, they are getting drowned out by things in this world like the video.

I have a suggestion for all of those that don’t want to see my posts, don’t read it or respond to it. People in this thread have stated that I shouldn’t watch the video on here. I stopped immediately when I found out what it was. So, people should also stop reading my posts if they feel the same about my posts.

69. SarahJM - December 5, 2009

#34 “It’s very sad our society has nose dived to this level of depravity. It is sad people enjoy it. I turned this off after about 4 seconds. Society is almost devoid of morals anymore. Very sad.”

You have to understand context in order to interpret morality. There is absolutely no context to those swear words, therefore there is nothing immoral in that video. It makes me sad that you have been offended by gibberish.

70. Trekluver - December 5, 2009

@ the doc

I understand what you mean because I stand for the same things but you cannot censor the Internet just the same way you can’t walmart. It Is everywhere and as Anthony said it is for anyone and if it’s not for you then there’s a warning for you. I found it annoyingly funny. The curseing was very, extreemely obnoxious but it was still funny. (”Apple juuuiiccee, for half-price!” Oh and the Picard suit clicking like a gun!) But other than that it was not worth watching. Rule of thumb is freedom of speach=a little bit of everything! So when you see or gear something like this and it offends you just bypass it and pretend it wasn’t there.

71. Trekluver - December 5, 2009

@68

I agree but from past experience telling other folks the truth about God or any other authority does not work on the Internet. I’ve tried. People can type as fast or faster than you can so if it where me I would leave it there and let this one pass; but I do 100% agree with you about the matter and that the words even though taken out of context represent another terible meaning. ( such as Data telling Geordi “go f**k a fruit basket” Very uncalled for; but also not Trekmovie.com’s fault)

72. the doc - December 5, 2009

#69, SarahJM, there must be context if people are getting something out of the video (and not just me).

#70&71, Trekluver, I am glad you understand what I am saying. God doesn’t ask us to confront things like this only when it is easy to do so. Just look at what Ezekiel went through for God.

73. the doc - December 5, 2009

Trekluver, I will disagree with you that this is not Trekmovie.com’s fault. The people that run this site could have not posted this on their site. That would be like saying a person renting a porno movie is not at fault because they didn’t produce the movie.

74. SarahJM - December 5, 2009

#68 “I do 100% agree with you about the matter and that the words even though taken out of context represent another terible meaning. ( such as Data telling Geordi “go f**k a fruit basket” ”

What exactly if the terrible meaning? You can’t actually f**k a fruit basket can you?

If a baby was gurgling away in her crib and somehow made the sound ‘fuc’, would you be upset? No, because you know the baby didn’t mean anything by it. Do you really think there is literal meaning behind “f**k a fruit basket” ?

If you were offended by this video, then you are just offended by a sound regardless of meaning, and that is ridiculous.

75. SarahJM - December 5, 2009

#72 “there must be context if people are getting something out of the video”

You don’t know the definition of context if you think there is context to the swear words in that video. It literally is just gibberish.

You are simply offended by the sound of particular words.

76. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

@64 — I don’t see how hiding morally objectionable behavior is better than conducting it secretly. The influence of such things is present regardless — those who crave it will find it. The real test of a society is how it manages morality in the populace — in the past, they turned a blind eye and occasionally cracked down, but today, there’s more of a system of management, with filters and age limits, etc. For example, on this site, we were warned about potentially offensive content, and we all chose to click ‘play’. I believe this latter system is better than enforcing a useless censorship system.

77. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

^correction: “…is better than conducting it openly. “

78. the doc - December 5, 2009

4 8 15 16 23 42, it is better not to distribute such materials than it is to promote it.

79. Trekluver - December 5, 2009

@ the doc

You are right again but all I’m saying is 99 times out of 100 you will get turned down on the Internet and stuff like this could go on for weeks! (it’s happened to me!) Thanks for standing up for what’s right but I’m gonna say that I do not aggree whith it’s message of useing curse words to make light of a dumb situation. It is not good to watch and not a true hommage to Star Trek. (allthough I can remember a few time it happened in trek…)

80. Trekluver - December 5, 2009

@ 4 8 15 16 23 42

Leave the guy alone! He has all rights to voice his oppinion and if we really care about upholding Trek then we better stop! Oppinions=welcome! Totalatarianizim=compleetely udderly rejected! Next this will be on io3.com I bet!

81. Trekluver - December 5, 2009

“This is a Disaster!”

82. ryanhuyton - December 5, 2009

Hey, Doc, I didn’t know that there is an “Authority” that we are supposed to obey(sarcasm, rolls eyes). And I also should’ve known what this “Authority” demands of us like you apparently do(more sarcasm, rolls eyes again). It is clear to me that you have an arrogant point of view regarding what is morally right or wrong. You have already made your point clear, and yet you are still BITCHING about how others are enjoying this article. The fact that you are still arguing about it doesn’t make any sense at all. And I would really like to know how you know exactly what this “Authority” approves of.

83. vorta23492392932939230 - December 5, 2009

I believe he is referring to this:

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ferengi_Commerce_Authority

They are everywhere, you know.

84. nuSpock - December 5, 2009

#73… “fruit basket” is also a derogatory term for a homosexual…implying homosexuality is a mental illness as well…

The supreme irony here is that most people here who are arguing against those pointing out moral decay are basically advocating if youve ever done something wrong, you have no right to any sense of right and wrong, and thus are basically proving their opposition’s point…

85. ryanhuyton - December 5, 2009

#73 How do you know what they meant by “fruit basket”? I’ll bet “fruit basket” means exactly what it is: Fruit basket!

Nobody is arguing against someone else pointing out “moral decay”. The problem I have is when these “moralists” try to ram their opinions down our throats. The Doc has made it clear that he despises the contents of this articles video, but instead of moving on like Anthony suggested earlier, he continues to obsess about it and condemn the site and it’s users.

86. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

@79 – excuse you, I am having an open discussion with the doc — trying to evince the subject, not suppress it. For all your pretense of encouraging opinions, you are actually trying to stifle them.

87. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 5, 2009

@77 – Making something available is not the same as trying to promote it. I repeat, you read the warning, but you clicked ‘play’ just the same as the rest of us. Moral individuals take responsibility for their actions.

88. pock speared - December 5, 2009

you guys crack me up. doc, you just keep doing what you do, baby. no grey areas in your world? that’s science fiction, and i love science fiction.

morality is just man’s why of justifying his own arrogance. chaos dismisses your foolishness, neatly and finally.

89. the doc - December 5, 2009

Chaos? Why would we want chaos? Isn’t that against the principles of the Federation in the show this site is about? Pock, you crack me up. You claim to be a Star Trek fan but seem to promote something very anti-Trek.

90. Kev - December 5, 2009

jesus H christ lighten up and just laugh, enough of this debate shit

yeash and stop being so insecure about star trek, every long running series has its ups and downs and ours is no different.

91. Joel1245 - December 5, 2009

Wow, that was two minutes and forty-five seconds of my life I want back. Come on Trekmovie, you’re better than that. Nuff’ Said.

92. ryanhuyton - December 5, 2009

#89 Be careful how you use “Jesus H Christ” someone might get angry:-)

93. SarahJM - December 5, 2009

#84 #73

I also think fruit basket means fruit basket.

As for The Doc, wereally shouldn’t be too hard on him. He has just been indoctrinated into believing arbitrary rules of conduct, and he doesn’t understand when the world doesn’t share that narrow existence.

He hears a swear word and instantly imagines fire and brimstone. He believes his “morals” are superior, and his interpretations are correct and therefore has no shame in speaking out. He is unaware that in doing so he is really the immoral person in the group.

You have to put in the effort to understand something before you speak out against it. The Doc put in no such effort, he heard a swear and reacted. It is kneejerk judgments like that that cause the real problems.

94. the doc - December 5, 2009

SarahJM, you just don’t want to submit to God. That’s your whole problem.

95. Penthesileia - December 6, 2009

I love the good old moral ‘Golden Ages’ of the past – where children didn’t swear and everyone ate apple pie but yay it was awesome to lynch black people, chicks had supposedly a fraction of the intellectual capacity of males and God help you if you showed homosexual tendencies :p

@doc – I do realize lack of bigotry is really a bit of a separate issue from this polite morality you are talking about, but really how can you think society is on a slippery slope?? societies change, parenting changes, but everyday life for most people now is a hell of a lot better for the vast majority of the population now compared to 50 years ago. Surely in exchange for that we can deal with a few questionably funny videos.

96. Anthony Pascale - December 6, 2009

the only authority here is me

and at this point doc you are hijacking this thread.

you are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts

Morality is relative, and yours will not dictate this sites policies. And one thing is for sure, you are not the arbiter of right and wrong, and you certainly cannot speak for Gene Roddenberry.

I declare the above video a bit of silliness and that is all. nothing more, nothing less.

After reading this entire discussion, I would like to atleast say one thing, Star Trek has had many episodes about morality, DS9 especially. I would like to direct attention to the episode “In the Pale Moonlight” where Sisko does things that, while the acts alone may be morally wrong, such as aiding (while unintentional, he enlisted Garak because deep down he knew something like that may need to happen) in the assasination of someone, and yet while this is morally wrong, it was for a morally just cause, to save the lives of many, and end the war faster, and I beleive that the Vulcans say it best by saying “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” and this would remain true even if it murder. There are morally grey areas, this is a fact, this should never be denied. There are my two cents.

#94 I don’t submit to fictional entities! WOOT!

100. Eli - December 6, 2009

Come now, SarahJM, even Star Trek has explored the possible existence of God…

I think if the debates on this thread have proven anything, it’s that we should all open our minds a little wider.

In the spirit of IDIC and all that…

101. JJ Savard - December 6, 2009

@100 and we all know how well ST5 was received . Untill I see a single piece of proof that there is a God, and more than just many differt people preaching many different things, I’m with SarahJM the God that is portrayed by man is wrong. I would suggest a movie called “Religulous” by Bill Maher, as I have found it one of the most thought provoking movies I’ve ever seen.

102. That One Guy - December 6, 2009

[The following scene takes place in a theater balcony. The main characters are two old men, portrayed by puppets. Their names are STATLER and WALDORF]

=========================================

WALDORF: What do you call someone who takes something mildly funny and makes it into a bigger deal than it ever should be?

STATLER: You?

WALDORF: A Trekkie!

BOTH: DOH! HO HO HO HO HO HO!!!

103. AJ - December 6, 2009

For once, the posts were as entertaining as the clip!

My favorite portrayal of “God” is His kick-assedness in “Raiders” when he solves that little island’s Nazi problem. “Marion! Don’t look! Keep your eyes shut!”

That is followed by His appearance in “Holy Grail” when he gives Arthur his mission and then berates him and his knights for averting their eyes.

This clip is a nice shred and is offensive to no one. I’ve watched it 5 times.

#100 The problem with getting people to accept there is a god is that people can’t go on pure faith alone. Everyone who believes in god has their own ideas of what he looks like, what he wants and how he wants to be worshipped. The idea of a god is a vague one at best. Gods differ from religion to religion, with all claiming “ownership” over an entity that is at least hypothetical. This is not to say there is no god, but there is no proof of god either. In my opinion, if there is a god, he isn’t a very good one and should be sued for defective goods(people). :-)

105. SarahJM - December 6, 2009

#100 “Come now, SarahJM, even Star Trek has explored the possible existence of God”

Sorry, but even Star Trek couldn’t convince me to worship fictional beings, so it is a good thing it doesn’t try. Star Trek and religion usually involves an alien with powerful technology who fools another world into believing he or she is a god. Here on earth we just have charismatic leaders that managed to convince others of a god. Either way, it is just science fiction.

106. Danpaine - December 6, 2009

You ‘morally-sensitive’ nay-sayers are ridiculous. This is hilarious stuff. Have you ever seen Patrick Stewart interviewed, perhaps Shatner? They have DIRTY minds. They’re just regular human men. Like me. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it, but I think that was simply priceless. Good stuff. Go join a commune someplace. Idiots. Learn to laugh.

107. AJ - December 6, 2009

‘Star Trek’ treats God as a mystery, as it should.

The farther our fictional friends go into space, the more mysteries remain unsolved. That’s as it should be.

Indeed, “Q” would satisfy most of today’s religious Earthers as God. I think it’s a credit to Gene Roddenberry & Co. that they created a character who embodies all the ‘abilities’ of our conception of God, and made him into an impudent imp. He’s the ‘Old Testament’ God: vengeful and political. Not forgiving or compassionate at all. And Picard sorts him out in the pilot.

So, it raises the stakes a bit. “Q” is immortal and all-powerful. But it ain’t God. “God” must be infinitely more powerful and mysterious than any deity referred to in the Bible.

Roddenberry also invited us to look within for “the” answer in his flawed TMP. V’ger sought its creator as a means to evolve beyond its programming. The universe, ‘knowing all that is knowable,” wasn’t enough. He figured giving V’ger emotion would allow it to evolve. Into what? What if V’ger needs a shrink when it still hasn’t found the answer?

STV clumsily alluded to the idea of false gods competing with the internal Judeo-Christian compass of the movie’s key demographic (us). God is not a bushy-bearded Michelangelo painting, but we do His will by acting upon what is in our hearts. It’s referred to as secular humanism.

In any case, “Trek” has done well to always maintain the mystery. If God is out there, he must have a hell of a cloaking device. And he definitely does NOT need a starship.

SarahJM, I am your personal cheerleader, pom-poms in hand! ;-)

I, too, am atheist, and one thing I love about Star Trek is that it is secular. This is to say that entertaining the possibility of a god is left at just that: contemplating the idea of it. There is no proselytizing for or against, just considering the arguments on each side of the matter. No true atheist could be anything but happy to see religious notions cast in such a light.

What do you say we make apple juice and fax it to each other.

“Surreal when you say that”.

111. FDR - December 7, 2009

@108, and pretty everyone else in this really hilarious thread,

I’m not atheist (I’m actually Catholic), but I totally get where you’re coming from. If you’re gonna preach about morals FAIRLY, you can’t just take one dogmatic narrow view and say “that’s the ticket”. A holistic view of the world and each society, coupled with a logical approach to reason, gets you fairness and equality every time. And if we’re going to bring up scripture, which some might want to, that whole line about checking your own eye for a plank before ‘removing the speck’ from the others’. Not sure if that plays in, but it’s what comes to mind.

Oh, and the video is hysterical. I laughed for hours. :)

112. That guy... - December 7, 2009

@108, you’ve either never seen many Original Series episodes or references in them went over your head.

Bread & Circuses – The runaway slaves were followers of Jesus, the Son of God.

Dagger of the Mind – Reference to a Christmas party.

The Ultimate Computer – “Murder is contrary to the laws of man & God.” – M5

Who Mourns For Adonais? – Kirk says, “Man has no need for gods. We find the one quite sufficient.”

Balance of Terror – There’s a cross in the chapel.

The Empath – Dr. Ozaba: “In His hands are the deep places of the Earth. Psalm 95, verse 4.” Dr. Linke: “Looks like He was listening”

In later versions of Trek, there were more: Star Trek Generations – Picard celebrates Christmas with his family.

DS9-Far Beyond the Stars – Joseph Sisko recites from the Bible to his son’s surprise and appears as a priest in his hallucination.

There are more, but the point is, Star Trek may be secular in nature and in how it’s presented, but it’s far from religion free and it’s been indicated repeatedly in the stories that various beliefs in some sort of supreme being still play a role in people’s lives in the 23rd and 24th centuries.

I say thank God for that. And thank God for Star Trek.

You are free to choose how you wish to live your life and what you want to believe, but I pray that God will show you, beyond a shadow of a doubt, of his existence and why we need him in our lives.

113. Anthony Thompson - December 7, 2009

112.

There’s only one thing more boring than politics. That’s religion. Jesus Christ, man! : D Please keep your preaching off of here.

114. Joel Fannin - December 7, 2009

Anthony, you need to stop preaching too.

115. 4 8 15 16 23 42 - December 7, 2009

@112 — You forgot to read my post: “There is no proselytizing for or against, just considering the arguments on each side of the matter.”

References to Christianity, or any religion for that matter, do not constitute arguments for it. I myself celebrate Christmas with my family for cultural reasons, and I could even see myself quoting the Bible, seeing as it is a piece of literature (whatever else it may or may not be).

I’ll grant you this one, however: “Who Mourns For Adonais? – Kirk says, ‘Man has no need for gods. We find the one quite sufficient.’” But, then, that’s also an ironic statement, and after all, Western civilization is monotheistic in its traditions, so this could also be referring simply to the cultural and societal nature of religion.

Anyway, That Guy, it’s like I say above, I could never be anything but content with a discussion pitting the arguments from all metaphysical belief systems against each other. I’m hardly scared of religious ideas, and I’m not wincing at yours — after all, you are certainly entitled to them — but please, don’t try to push them on me….

116. Harry Ballz - December 7, 2009

Religious zealots are best ignored for the weak-willed morons that they are…

117. Peruser1245 - December 7, 2009

Hey, what a great response Harry. Intelligent and well thought out there. Yeah, way to represent.

118. Alfonso - December 7, 2009

Effing classic. I love YouTube.

Thanks, I like it, too!

120. Ironscythe - December 9, 2009

I just laughed harder than no man has laughed before. Seriously.

121. M167a1 - December 18, 2009

I for one, laughed so hard I woke up the entire house and set the dogs to barking.

Don’t get so wrapped up.. its just good old non-sequitur humor and some people like it and some don’t.

It is certianly better writen that Insurrection or nemisis and vastly improves the level of dialogue in TNG. See what they could have done with some better writing….

Not to mention the whole third season of TOS, and prety much all of Voyager.

122. Dayjob Orchestra - June 3, 2010

Hey, Pete here from DJO. I stumbled across this while googling “dayjob orchestra” (which I do now & then to see who is linking to us). I was happy to see we spawned a conversation about morality!

BTW, “fuck a fruit basket”, like all the lines, was generated by interpreting mouth movements – in other words – random. Only 5 of our 90 videos ever tried to be coherent.

Yes we are immature, profane and irreverent, and likely always will be.

My 2 cents on morality: There is no absolute morality – there is always gray area. IE murder is always wrong, right? What if 10 people are ship wrecked on an island. 5 are near death from malnutrition, the other 5 are visibly healthier, although malnourished. A rescue ship is 20 days away. If the healthier 5 castaways murdered and ate the other 5, those healthy 5 would survive long enough to be rescued. If not, all 10 would die. This assumes that the variables as stated can be known by all parties – a hypothetical yet effective scenario to illustrate the point; morality is subjective. The fact that there is any disagreement at all shows that morality is subjective. If you think morality is black and white, and you know what the “right” values are, then in the words of the ancient Greek humorist, Hystericles, “Go Fuck a Fruit Basket”. To those who laughed, cheers with a tall glass of apple juice.

DJO
