Lost: Interviews with Cast
Season six of "Lost" is well underway, and the cast is talking about what has been revealed and what’s to come.  Here are a few excerpts from various interviews.  First up is Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert):

"We have gotten to that point where there is an episode that deals with the origins of Richard Alpert and the bigger questions about his character, as well as bigger questions about the island and the mythology of it. It’s an episode that reveals a lot. After three years playing this character, I was floored when I got the script and I was so excited to actually get to do the episode. They wrote a really tremendous script."

In an interview with Fancast, Michael Emerson (Ben Linus) hints that he can’t [spoiler–highlight to view] be killed by the Smoke Monster:

After “NotLocke” (aka the Smoke Monster) orchestrated Jacob’s death, why didn’t he just turn around and kill Ben?

Emerson: That’s a good question and I wondered it myself. But there is a reason why he can’t do that.

Yunjin Kim discussing with TV.com how the audience will see a different version of her character Sun from seasons past:

You are going to see a different side to Sun, and how she relates to… how do I say it? She’s… hmmm… she still has the same intentions, she’s there to find Jin on the island. But then there’s a different storyline…in this storyline, I have a very different relationship with Jin.

Rounding out the week’s "Lost"-related news, here are a few misc news and casting bites. "Lost" airs Tuesday night’s at 9:00 on ABC.

  • Cynthia Watros describes her onscreen reunion with Jorge Garcia (Hurley) as "so sweet and honest…I was really grateful that I got to play those scenes and Libby got to sort of express herself in ways that she hasn’t been able to."…[EW]
  • …And on a related note, the 12th episode of the season will be Hurly-centric and will show "a completely different life" for the character, according to Garcia. [NY Mag]
  • The title of episode 6×13 is "The Last Recruit". [DarkUFO]
  • Check out two interviews with Emilie de Ravin at TV Guide Magazine and E! Online.
  • Maggie Grace (Shannon) is reportedly expected to make a cameo this season, but her rep says "there is not much to comment on at the moment". [Fancast]
  • Two casting calls have gone out for episode 15. [Dark UFO & DarkUFO]

SGU Looking for New Baddie + Shanks Doubts More Stargate Movies
Producers of "Stargate Universe" are looking for someone to play Simeon, "a dangerous Lucian Alliance solider".  The character will appear in 6-7 episodes and come into confrontation with Robert Carlyle’s character, Rush.  Here are more details courtesy SpoilerTV:

He was a seasoned criminal before being recruited by the Alliance. He’s strong and intimidating but more crafty and wiry than big and muscular. Scary in that you’re never sure what he will do. He also holds secrets that are desperately sought after by Earth and those on board Destiny — secrets he would die or worse, kill to protect. He’s an antagonist for several episodes before he finally comes into serious conflict with Robert Carlyle’s character Rush and they are forced to face off.

In other news, "Stargate SG-1" star Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) told SCI FI Wire that future movies may never happen, or are at the very least "very far away":

"This might be the closing of the book on that particular [chapter of the] franchise," Shanks said, although he doesn’t totally dismiss the possibility: "Never say never. It’s always a possibility…The SG-1 idea is somewhat on the back burner, which is a little bit unfortunate, because I think one more story would have been a great way to bring Rick (Richard Dean Anderson) back in and really go there. But you know, business is business."

"Stargate Universe" returns from hiatus on April 2nd.  In the meantime, fans can enter a contest to create the cover art for an upcoming graphic novel.  The graphic novel focuses on the season 1.0 cliffhanger question: "What will happen to Dr. Rush?".  The deadline to enter is February 23rd.  Enter at SGU Graphic Novel Contest.

Three to Run FlashForward; Show Order Cut by One Episode
With David Goyer stepping down as "FlashForward" showrunner last week, ABC has found three people to run the show.  They are: Jessika Borsiczky (who had previously been one), Lisa Zwerling and Tim Lea.  "FlashForward" is currently in production on its 17th and 18h episodes.  At the same time, however, ABC has cut the show’s order from 23 episodes back down to 22.  As you may remember, ABC initially gave the show an expanded 12-episode order (from 13 episodes to 25), but later reduced the order to 24 and then 23.  "FlashForward" returns with new episodes on March 18th.  Head on over to SpoilerTV for casting calls to episode 12 and episode 19.

Chuck Season Finale Will Be Two Hours + Christopher Lloyd To Guest Cast
NBC has announced that the third season of "Chuck" will conclude with a two-hour finale on Monday, May 24th from 8:00-10:00 p.m. (episodes 18 and 19).  Meanwhile executive producer Josh Schwartz revealed on his Twitter account that Christopher Lloyd ("Back to the Future") will guest star in this season’s 16th episode ("Chuck vs. the Tooth") as a therapist that Chuck visits.  In other casting news, executive producers Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedek confirmed that Kristin Kreuk’s character Hannah will appear in just one more episode (March 1st), while Brandon Routh’s arc has been extended but it’s not clear how many more episodes he’ll appear in.  Also, Mark Sheppard will play a villain in episodes 12 and 13.  And lastly, producers Josh Schwarz and Chris Fedek took some time to answer questions resulting from a certain string of events that happened during last week’s episode.  Check out an extensive interview with the two producers at TV critic Alan Sepinwall’s blog What’s Alan Watching? (and you can check out an interview with actress Yvonne Strahovski at TV.com).  Here is the official synopsis for episode eight "Chuck vs. the Fake Name", airing on March 1st:

CHUCK GOES UNDERCOVER AS THE WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS ASSASSIN— KRISTIN KREUK (”SMALLVILLE”) AND BRANDON ROUTH (”SUPERMAN RETURNS”) GUEST STAR—Chuck (Zachary Levi) promises to cook dinner for Hannah (guest star Kristin Kreuk), Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) but must first assume the identity of the world’s most dangerous assassin for his latest mission. Meanwhile, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) is determined to keep her relationship with Shaw (guest star Brandon Routh) strictly professional. Adam Baldwin, Scott Krinsky, Vik Sahay and Mark Christopher Lawrence also star.

In other "Caprica" news, co-creator Ron Moore says the show will explore other societies besides just Caprica and Tauron, including Sagittaron (which will become known as the hotbed of terrorist activity), Gemenon (homebase for the monotheism movement) and Scorpia. [LA Times]. And TV Guide reports that the producers of "Caprica" have already contacted Lucy Lawless to reprise her role as D’Anna on the show. Finally, Caprica is still struggling in the ratings, with the latest being a series low. More details at the bottom of the article in the ratings wrap-up.

SCI-FI RATINGS (Based on final national numbers unless otherwise noted) [@TravisYanan]

Syndicated sci-fi drama "Legend of the Seeker" rose again, this time drawing its second-highest audience of the season.  The January 30th episode was up 5% from the week prior to 2.58 million viewers. Since hitting a season low on January 9th, "Legend of the Seeker" has improved by 300,000 viewers or 13% (from 2.28M viewers).  Overall, season two is averaging 2.44 million viewers (through 10 original episodes). [TV by the Numbers]

Another week, another poor performance for the Syfy original series "Caprica".  Week three drew a series-low 1.13 million viewers and a series-low tying 0.4 A18-49 rating.  That’s a decline of 20% in both viewers and A18-49 rating from the week prior. "Caprica" is down nearly 0.5M viewers (or 29%) from the series premiere (1.60M viewers). [@TravisYanan]

We have to wait til summer for Being Human? Damn.

Sorta NSFW pictures of SF actresses: Talk about Fringe! ;-) Of course, it depends on where you work, too, I guess.

Yet another great update for people who have time to watch SF, which I wish included me!

I figure once I retire, there’ll be lots of Lost, etc., to look forward to. :-)

Also, Christopher Lloyd was in ST III. He was Kruge. Just thought I’d mention that.

Thanks, Rosario, as always, for the great update!

Again: No info on The Clone Wars? How many times must I ask why there is no info on The Clone Wars?

#4 What I’d like to know is if the planned live action Star Wars series is still going to happen since I haven’t heard anything about it for a while. I think it was due to air in the fall. Perhaps it was scrapped.

OOPS I meant #3

The spoiler text in the Lost section is not properly hidden.

Here is a link to some possible news about the Clone Wars:

http://news.google.com/news?q=%22The+Clone+Wars%22&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&ei=dIF4S4i1OpKCsgPvrNnLCA&sa=X&oi=news_group&ct=title&resnum=5&ved=0CC0QsQQwBA

There’s a whole lot of SF info out there and a few shows are bound to be left out.

For example, I’m pretty sure there’s some stuff out there about the new Superman movie.

There’s only so much time to write about these things, I’m sure.

we split the scifi news into tv and movies. The superman news was in the movie update from a few days ago
https://trekmovie.com/2010/02/10/sci-fi-movies-wednesday-batman-captain-america-ghostbusters-iii-robocop-spider-man-superman-more/

We have covered clone wars in many of our TV updates. if there is something to add, Rosario will make an update i am sure

As long as we’re on the topic of topics, it would be cool to see a Valentine’s Day TrekMovie.com story.

For example, there could be a list of Trek romances (Kirk/Keeler, Worf/Troi, Odo/Kira, et al.).

I’m pretty sure they had that here last year. But it could be updated with new commentary and insights from research and analysis conducted since last year. (That sentence doesn’t sound very romantic, does it? ;-) )

^^ Thanks, Anthony!

I’m sure Anthony is working on something. Unless of course, he has a hot date :-)

Thanks Anthony!

wasnt planning on valentines day this year, but reposted updated version of 2008 article for those that wanted something

#1 – I’m impatient too, really interested to see what the American team will do with the concept. Could be good. :)

Is it just me, is the format really screwed up in this topic??? Everything is centered in the middle, which makes it really freakin hard to read….

lousy caprica!

Oh my.
I know the actress from Caprica is older than her character, but her pics make me feel like a dirty old man.

I already have a “frak off” t-shirt, but one more wouldn’t hurt!

Allesandra Torresani. Maxim. Good stuff.

I am looking forward to the rest of the sixth season of LOST.

I’m still not sure whether I am getting into in proper yet. The first couple of episodes were good, although a little confusing. Last weeks episode was not as good as the first two though. I hope this week we get a really good LOST episode.

#4 uhm the live action series of star wars, won’t begin maybe before next year, and i think thats when they begin filming. so don’t expect it before 2012

mmmmm Allesandra Torresani mmmmmm

I love Caprica but it needs to pick up its pace a bit, an example being the Tea scene with Lacy and Clarice, in fact all the scenes with Lacy and Clarice lol.

No one is watching Caprica for 2 reasons:
1) Battlestar ended almost a YEAR ago…so no one really cares…
and 2) IT IS SOOOO Gods damned boring!!!!!! I can’t stay awake while watching it!!!! For frak’s sake, DO SOMETHING!!!!! Instant cure for insomnia!

#23 I don’t watch Caprica as a matter of principal. They gave BSG such a lousy send-off I don’t watch Caprica in protest. In the “Here We Go Again Dept”, its the same reason I will never watch Terminator Salvation. They cancelled “The Sarah Conner Chronicles” in order to make that movie….

Bring Back The Sarah Conner Chronicles!

I like Caprica, but, like BSG, it’s the sort of show I’d rather collect on Blu-ray and watch as many eps as I like!

Which is pretty much what I always do with US TV shows. I can’t help the ratings, but shiny disc distributors do well out of me!!

Oh, and I loved the end of BSG!

sorry but – Caprica?… it like watching a soap opera.. boring!

DS9 and B5 proved that space operas can hold an audience over the course of several seasons. Space exploration does not necessarily have to be the main focus. They were up against each other. And both did pretty well considering how similar the shows were. If Caprica fails, it isn’t because of the format.

the ‘play’ arrow on the Allesandra video is blocking the letters and makes it look like a bad word!

No matter what they attempt to do with changing SGU it too little too late. What a conflicted mess. Not only a huge waste of time but a waste of resources they could have use on another series or direct to DVD films. For TPTB to allow a continuation of this series is nothing but sheer folly.

I really hate it when people refuse to watch Caprica because of how BSG ended. It’s just stupid and petty.

I say, if you’ve watched the show and it’s not your kettle of fish, fine. But not watching it simply because you’re pissed off about the ending (which I myself loathed) is simply not giving the show a chance.

If I acted that way about every show/movie/book I’d become a fan of I would have never watched the new Star Trek or later seasons of Lost (third season was very disappointing). And I’d also never have watched Dollhouse. The list goes on. Writers aren’t infallible, so sometimes they make mistakes. And sometimes those mistakes are really, really big. That doesn’t mean you should just pretend they never entertained you.

30…. “Writers aren’t infallible, so sometimes they make mistakes. And sometimes those mistakes are really, really big. That doesn’t mean you should just pretend they never entertained you.”

Yeah, but in the words of Frasier, there are “tossed salads and scrambled eggs”, or things that once done, can’t be undone. BSG had at least two… the idiotic “one year later” fast-forward, and then its “we really were just making this up as we went along, forget what we hinted at before” finale. It’s really hard to stay interested in a show or characters when the writers hopelessly and irrepairably ruin them. There’s a lot of competition for TV viewership. Why waste time on “Caprica” when its BSG-alumni creators already jerked us around once? “Caprica” really should have been a 4-hour miniseries like the BSG pilot.

Dollhouse was awful, plain and simple. Talk about writers being fallible! Whedon derailed on that one, and Fox execs must have had the flu the day they green-lit that show.

24…
Sarah Conner: classic example of a good idea executed very, very badly.

31.

I still think you’re making a mistake about Caprica, but I suppose you’re free to be resentful.

As for Dollhouse… I partially agree with you. Dollhouse was really boring for most of the first season and the first few episodes of the second season. But the end of the first season and majority of the second season was actually pretty awesome.

My point was more that I was very disappointed with Serenity but gave Dollhouse a chance regardless. Same with Doctor Horrible.

I really don’t understand why so many people have a problem with the way BSG ended. I felt like most of the important questions got answered and ridding themselves of their tech seemed like a logical choice to me. In hind sight I would have liked to seen them tie Starbuck to the 13th tribe in another way other than the song, but it wasn’t enough to ruin the series for me or give me doubts about trying Caprica out.

So far Caprica seems to be a bit slower paced than BSG but that was to be expected. It’s a completely different type of show and they said that from the start, so if you’re looking for BSG then watch BSG, Caprica isn’t a substitute or a replacement. I’ve enjoyed all the episodes I’ve seen so far (though I haven’t seen last weeks yet) despite the fact that it’s more family/drama driven than most of the shows I like to watch.

The fact that they have confirmed Lucy Lawless as D’Anna probabaly means there will be some more ‘time skipping’ like at the end of BSG season 2. Right now they are still about 18 years away from the five’s arrival and the ‘birth’ of the other 8 cylons…so they are either going to skip a few years here and there OR you will see a human or avatar version of what will become the D’Anna model. Can’t wait to see how they do it!

Caprica is marvelous. I don’t get all the heavy negative criticism of the show. It’s got great potential. I just hope SyFyllis doesn’t kill it knee-jerk style.

They do need to move along with the stories, of course. Particularly getting into the 12 worlds. That’s the interesting part… let’s see something in space — how do you get from Caprica to Gemenon. Shouldn’t someone be going to “investigate”? What type of lifting craft do they use? Do they have 2001: Space Odyssey type space planes, orbital stations and the like? They ought to!

However, SciFi debuted Caprica very poorly, and indeed should be running mini-thons like they did the second week every week. That way it would indeed run like a mini-series each week. New eyeballs that way could watch and pick it up and understand it better.

Lucy Lawless as D’Anna is no big problem. She might be the real person, on whom the Royal Five will eventually base the avatar upon, just like Zoe.

As a matter of fact, I’d love it if they had turned out to have based almost all the Elite 8 models upon real humans that end up involved in Caprica. It just would make Ellen a bit of a liar, which is something we already know she can do with the best of them!!

Just think of having Dean Stockwell as a Gemenese underground monotheist! He could be Ellen’s inspiration in 18 years….

How about a very young Korean-appearing girl, say age 10 or so named anything but “Sharon” turning up, whose best friend is a young William Adama. Of course, Willy will never realize that she’s the base for 8 in 18 years… but again… we’d all know, and that’s the point.

I am so pumped to see Richard’s backstory. It’s been a long time coming.

34.

Not a bad idea, but I’m pretty damn sure One/JC is based specifically on Ellen’s father.

Caprica, despite having some nice attributes, is somewhat unengaging. Already sick of the shaky cam, the terrorist plot, teenager in a tin can, ect. In the last episode, Zoe and friend just decide to let the other “pure” Avatar go out on her own in the VR world. Huh. I like Surge, maybe he can get his own buttkicking series.

can anyone explain what made the BSG finale so ‘bad’? I loved it, but it never hurts to hear the other side of the argument…

38. doug_skywalker:

Essentially followers of Richard Dawkins (a vain British scientist who realised he could be much more famous by slagging off religion than concentrating on memes and thereby guaranteeing himself regular work on the UK’s Channel Four) and other ‘New Atheism’ followers who not only disagree with belief in God, but actively attack people’s democratically-enshrined right to freedom of religion, went mental because there was mention of ‘God’ in the finale.

Whether it was ‘God’ in the sense of Jehovah is never discussed. Whether the two self-professed ‘Angels sent by God’ who looked like Baltar and Caprica Six were angels in the sense of biblical winged messengers or something else is left open.

However, a higher plan and some sort of external manipulation of the characters is evident from the outset as the Pythian Chronicles were persistently accurate leading the characters to the point where the Final Five activated and Starbuck is apparently resurrected.

Sadly, many of the people who don’t get the ending, never appreciated that Galactica is based on the Book of Exodus and the Book of Mormon. They claim the ending was ‘deus ex machina’ because ‘God did it!’ which couldn’t be further from the truth. We don’t know what the ‘God’ of Galactica is. For all we know, it was a Cylon from a previous cycle of time attempting to engineer a better path for this cycle’s humans and Cylons!

There was certainly a path laid out from the start of the show, but the humans often had the chance to stray from it and, indeed, often did with terrible consequences.

Also, a portion of viewers flipped at the survivors’ decision to scuttle their spaceships and end their society in the hope that something new would develop. It wasn’t the survivors becoming ‘Luddite’ at the end of the series: it was a conscious attempt to destroy an endless cycle in which humans develop machine intelligence and the two destroy one another. Also, these people had spent years trying to survive on those ships and doubtless would never want to go into space again.

However, the Cylon Centurions were also freed, meaning a new machine intelligence – the children of Man – had the chance to grow and find their own place in the universe, which also broke the cycle. Indeed, perhaps further-evolved Centurions such as these from an earlier cycle were that ‘God’.

Now Caprica offers the opportunity to expand on many unexplained aspects of Galactica. We knew the fleet was rife with racial tensions between colonies, for example. Adama is seeing images of his daughter, a la Baltar and Caprica Six and Zoe is often seen in human form, although she is in a proto-Cylon shell.

I like endings that don’t explain everything. Galactica left a lot of room for discussions when it finished (was Starbuck a ghost, an avatar, from the Ship of Lights? for example.) Other than the extremists who could never see past the mention of God, Galactica left room for Caprica to add whole new layers to what we saw. Especially with regard to what the outside force manipulating Galactica was.

But, I looked for mysteries in Galactica. In this day of web-based episode guides, a lot of sci fi fans seem to have become rather narrow in their views.

Rather than having fun discussing issues stories leave lingering, they tend to froth at the mouth demanding definitive ‘canon’ answers (the issue of Chris Pine’s Kirk having blue eyes for example) when often the mystery is vastly more appealing.

See the two types of fans in any discussions: one group sees mysteries to be explored on a personal level while the other can’t get past not having everything explained in laborious detail!

@Dom – Thanks a bunch. That TOTALLY makes sense. If I had to fall into one of the two types of sci-fi/any-kind-of-fiction fans, I’d definitely be the ‘lets-explore-the-mystery-type’. Although, once in a while it’s nice to get an explanation or two of a few things that clearly don’t add up (example, George Kirk’s rank in ST09…I think it was a goof-up by the writers/wardrobe dept).

IMO about the BSG Finale: Daybreak, personally I took Galactica’s religion as a sci-fi simply a higher power that went by many names (agnostic, I think). Also, I felt that the very end of Daybreak was just right. Apollo knew better than to allow for the fleet to build their cities and such because he knew that they would just end up blowing themselves up again. I guess when I listened to his rationale that he told Adama, he wanted to try to get humanity to get back to being ‘human’, or as he said “Our minds have always outraced our hearts.”

And in a way, Pythia came true as Laura died when they got to our Earth, she had her role in the opera house vision, and even Sharon/Athena played her part as “The lower demon that helped the people in a time of crisis”.

And I am very glad Helo made it through, otherwise I would’ve been just a tad upset :)

P.S. – They also left open a potential sequal series to BSG with the Centurions and their Baseship. We never did see what happened to the rest of the Cylon fleet after the colony blew up…

maybe they all show up during our time and we have to rely on the Centurions that once tried to kill our Colonial ancestors….

just a thought.

@ #39 Dom – “Essentially followers of Richard Dawkins and other ‘New Atheism’ followers who not only disagree with belief in God, but actively attack people’s democratically-enshrined right to freedom of religion, went mental because there was mention of ‘God’ in the finale.”

There are also Christians who take the ending of BSG as a full endorsement of their faith, and are literally thumbing their nose at anyone who believes otherwise. Your same argument can be used to disprove their lunacy as well as “extremist” atheists.

I meant to add this link at the end of my last post so you could see what I’m talking about.
http://christwire.org/2009/03/crybaby-atheists-upset-over-battlestar-galactica-series-finale-daybreak-part-ii-watch-online-now/

42. darthmalevol

Yes, well, sadly religious fanatics and atheist fanatics are peas in a pot. Cut off Richard Dawkins’s hands and you have another Abu Hamza! I prefer the gentlemanly agnosticism of the likes of Carl Sagan than the yobbish behaviour of Dawkins’s atheism and the frothing as the mouth of extremist wings of otherwise peaceful, beneficial religions.

I simply saw the plans, angels, gods and so on in Battlestar Galactica as mysteries to be discussed. Maybe He was Jehovah, maybe he was a super-Cylon, maybe an evolved human, maybe an alien. The mystery is part of the fun of it!

Sadly the nutters on both sides decided to read definitive answers into the ending which actually counters much of the point of the show!

As I say, there’s much to be discussed and, indeed, more to be revealed in Caprica! People who read definitive answers into Galactica and abuse others who disagree are closed minded and lacking in insight.
