Watch: Shatner Hosts British Comedy Quiz Show – Sings Rocket Man

On Friday Star Trek’s William Shatner was the guest host for the BBC comedy show Have I Got News For You," which is a quiz show poking fun at the news of the week. With Shatner as host there were of course a few Star Trek references thrown in. Plus he sings a bit of "Rocket Man." The show is available to watch online, check it out below.

This show is dying on its arse … but the Shat ruled on Friday Night!

Have I Got News For You is hilarious… it’s hardly dying on it’s arse.

Abrams should call Shatner & let him in the new Star Trek movie.

This is like the John Daily Show if it were shot on VHS in you neighbor’s basement, with your embarassing uncle hosting…it’s painful to watch.

@3. Based on this appearance? Are you fracking kidding me? What is it about this appearance that should get Shat in the new movie? Sorry, I am not seeing even the slighest connection???

@5. MJ – May 28, 2012

“@3. Based on this appearance? Are you fracking kidding me? What is it about this appearance that should get Shat in the new movie?”

None, I’m simply saying that Abrams should find a way to put Shatner in the sequel.

The guy is 81 but still very active, and I’d love to see him one last time in a Trek movie.

4. MJ

Do you ever have anything positive or nice to say?

He should host every week.

Watched this on Friday and the extended version on Sunday. So much fun. One of my favourite shows with a terrific guest host! :D

Shatner rules! And yes, it would be great to see him as Kirk one more time. Maybe two or more… Who knows in the next reboot? Dream on, Gil. He was gorgeous as a young man, and he looks what every man 60-up would dream to look. Not to mention his stamina and GREAT sense of humor.

@6 “None, I’m simply saying that Abrams should find a way to put Shatner in the sequel.”

But what does that have to do with his comedic appearance on the Brit comedy show?

@7 “Do you ever have anything positive or nice to say?”

Sure, dispite some rough patches, your posts are incremtally improving over my friend. Keep up the good work!

Also, congrats on the Canadian Healthcare system; it is much better than our shambles of healthcare down here!

Well done on “Mantracker” as well — love that show!

CN Tower — coolest tower in North America!!!

How’s that?

This was a riot! Totally hilarious!

:-D

“I appeal to the masses, if not the intelligentsia.”

I enjoyed this quite a bit, especially the tongue-in-cheek Trek references.

“What was the cause of the rocket’s failure to launch?”
“Romulans.”

:D

Caught this here in the U.K., and a very well-looking Shatner was a warmly welcomed triumph! His host chair was fitted out to resemble his TOS ‘Captain’s chair, which was a nice touch.

The show was liberally littered with hilarious Trek references, and Shatner even got to drop an F-bomb during the many irreverent gags!

The guy’s STILL got it in spades, and despite what some may insist, it remains a huge pity that he didn’t end up being incorporated alongside Nimoy forJ.J.’s ‘TOS’-themed reboot in the first place.

Well, at times funny….I watched two out of three…

Bill looks really good here!

This was hilarious to watch. William Shatner looked great. Everyone had a great sense of humour. It’s a shame we don’t see the programme here.

4. MJ

Do you ever have anything positive or nice to say?

MJ has some positive things to say. Unfortunately, he is on automatic negative mode when it comes to Mr. Shatner. I believe if you look back at any article about the actor on this site, his first comment is along the line of “what a jerk”.

I hesitate to even mention this because if the pattern remains the same it will unleash a string of retorts about being a “Shat lover”.

I realize that nothing I can say can convince MJ to refrain from personal insults of Mr. Shatner. I see no issue with disagreeing with an actor’s performance, but I believe that repetitive attacks on someone’s physical condition and age is non-productive.

Regards.

I love Shatner. I love Mel Torme. I love a good steak. I love a good glass of tea and watching old TV like Wild Wild West or a Twilight Zone marathon. I love a lot of garlic in my spaghetti sauce. I love a good glass of red. I love the theme from The Odd Couple. I love the smell of old comic books. There, I said it.

“Have you been to Ilfracombe?”…

“…its laced with prostitutes”.

I’m not sure why but I very nearly wet myself.

Some good moments.

Some not so good moments.

It really was “the best of times and the worst of times”

….”message Spock?”

“None that I am aware of Admiral, other than keep off Brit comedy quiz shows if you want to prevent written attacks by Trekkies…”

“…surely, the best of times…”

Entertaining stuff at least.

Shat rules! By the way, British (Scottish?) writer genious Steven Moffit just won a Bafta.(dr who/sherlock) Pareamount needs to tap this guy for the next Trek. Anyone with me?

#20

You’re a man of impeccable tastes then. :)

The Odd Couple theme is great, isn’t it? Gets stuck in my head often, but unlike other tunes, I don’t mind it.

12. MJ “CN Tower—coolest tower in North America”

MJ, not to go all Sarah Palin on you, but I can see the CN Tower from my window!

:>)

@19. My criticisms of Shat are ALL based on what he has said, done, etc, as well as my inability to stop myself from responding to Shat worshippers who keep posting that the 81-year old 300 pound Shat should suit up still and play Kirk in the JJ Trek movies….yes, that drives me crazy, as it completely lacks common sense in my opinion.

That is where I am coming from, Lostrod. You do me a disservice by simplifying it to “personal insults.” My actions are based solely on what is published on Shat (which unfortunately have in many cases led many an impartial person to conclude that the guy is a jerk), and in response to the ridiculous posts here of people who think he should be playing Kirk still in the movies.

@24. Cool !

25. MJ

I’m starting to feel the same way towards you. You are just plain nasty sometimes.

@27. My goodness, ever time I try to respond to you with a little bit of levity, you go negative on me? What is with you, dude? You are way too serious here for your own good. Lighten up, man!

This is not real life here…we are on a fan board posting about Star Trek…I did not steal your puppy or yell at your mom, OK? Sheesh!!!

@22

Yeah, it’s classic Neal Hefti. Have you ever seen the original movie? It was such a fully realized piece of music even back before the show. The opening 8 or 9 minutes of the movie just entrance me.

But, as to Shatner being in the next movie (and this has not been a chief concern of mine) but – have the writers find a way that everyone (me included) would buy and then I’ll call them the wonder boys everyone else says they are. I saw him in his one man show and he’s just as vibrant as ever. I mean, why not?

28. MJ

Hey Buddy… re-read your post at #25. You were being nasty. THAT is not called for. Take your own advice…. “You are way too serious here for your own good. Lighten up, man!”

Did Shatner steal your puppy or yell at your mom? Did he not show up at some convention that you traveled all day for and he couldn’t sign your Kirk action figure? Being incredibly obnoxious and insulting is not necessary. “we are on a fan board posting about Star Trek.”

#29

Yes, I have seen the original Odd Couple movie. Several times. It’s great! Has what I think is the funniest line in any movie:

“I can’t take it anymore, Felix, I’m cracking up. Everything you do irritates me. And when you’re not here, the things I know you’re gonna do when you come in irritate me. You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can’t stand little notes on my pillow. “We’re all out of cornflakes. F.U.” Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar!”

:D

MJ has the right to state his opinion as much as everyone else. I don’t always agree with him when it comes to Shatner, but what he has said isn’t all that bad. He refuses to be “politically correct”, which I admire. He speaks his mind when most others here tend to beat around the bush.

The comments sections on this site can be full of sterile, PC opinions all too often. People like MJ and Harry Ballz make things interesting. I think we all should be grateful for the right to free speech.

The last thing we need is more politically correct “everybody must only say postive things in an orderly manner/no criticism allowed” fascist crap.

postive=positive

DAMN TYPOS!!!

@32. Red Dead Ryan

I have no issue with people stating their opinion. I have an issue with people being rude and insulting. The guy has absolutely no respect and spews out insults. I’m not a fan of Brent Spiner but I don’t go around and post insults and be completely rude. There is a way of doing things with respect. Harry Ballz has respect and is never a jerk with the way he writes. MJ could learn a few things from Harry.

Ryan and Paul

thank you for your kind words.

It certainly would be a boring world if we all agreed on everything.

C’mon, everybody…….GROUP HUG!!

#35.

Aw, a wonderful hug…..ooh, damn, I squished my sandwich!

@34. Whatever, dude. I refuse to name call against you the way you name call against me. Shat is in the public eye, so you can’t equate me calling him “a jerk” with you then getting a free pass to call me “a jerk.” That is getting personal, which is just not cool.

But if it makes you feel better to name call me, be my guest. Rest assured though, I will not stoop to your level and take personal potshots are you on these boards.

I’ve tried being jovial towards you and tried to lighten things up, but you seem on a mission to attack me personally here. Go for it if you must, but I refuse to respond in kind.

For everyone else here, I am not going to change the way I post one iota. If that means I have to continue to endure personal attacks, name calling, and harassment from Montreal Paul, so be it….

@32. Thanks for the support, RDR. Much appreciated!

Hey Montreal_Paul,

You seem to be like a pit bull the last few weeks, looking to get at MJ, Red Dead Ryan and others every chance you get. You are coming across like Kirk in “Obsession.” What are you so upset about?

Ditch the Captain Ahab routine please and settle down.

I think there should be a ban on “Put Shatner in the new movie” posts, every time Shatner is mentioned in an article and even when he isn’t it gets brought up, it’s probably not going to happen and we kinda get the picture now.

I did see this show (watched “Have I got a bit more news for you”, the enhanced repeat on Sunday night) and it was very funny, Shatner brought his A-Game as always.

oh MJ. Give it a bloody rest mate.
Shat was great in this, and not at all embarrassing. Trust me, if he’d have been bad at it Ian and Paul would have torn him to bits. They have been doing this show for 20 years so they know a good one from a bad one.

I’m based in the Middle East and have only just managed to see this. Sadly there aren’t many Trek fans out here, but I think he was brilliant. And that’s it. He really entered into the spirit of things and clearly enjoyed himself. He was a memorable host as they should be on this still-very funny show.

@41. Actually Buzz, Shat is pretty funny in this. The show and set look pretty lame though, which is what my comment actually focused on here:

“This is like the John Daily Show if it were shot on VHS in you neighbor’s basement, with your embarassing uncle hosting…it’s painful to watch.”

So, I never even said anything negative about Shat in these series of posts on this article. But obviously, some people have petty little scores to settle, so this fact be damned I guess when their goal is personally harassing posters who they dislike and have bested them in intelligent discourse. (FYI: not talking about you Buzz…you usually best me anyways!)

The Shat fit in nicely with the gang, the ST jokes were low-key and well done – I highly enjoyed it. :)

It is people like MJ that ruin this site and the good hearted discussion that takes place….sad..

Funny how he got Paul Merton’s name mised up as ‘Paul MORTON’ on the first time around, and when he tried again, he got Ian Hislop’s name mixed up as ‘Ian HILSOP’…

Funny how, for some reason, he could not pronounce Didier Drogba’s name properly.

@45. You have a nice day too, mysterious “UK Trek” dude. ;-)

I refuse to respond to personal attacks from people,be they French Canadians, sock-puppets, or pitchfork carrying followers of such.

39. Red Shirt Diaries

My issue is that lately I have been reading more and more venom and hate coming from MJ… It really annoys me to read such crap from people. I come on these boards to read some light hearted stories and comments about Trek… what I am seeing more and more is “Shatner is a 300 pound jerk”; “Garrett Wang is an ass”; etc. This really takes the fun out of coming here now. Just a few people can ruin it for so many… I am not the only one that has spoken up about this either… but perhaps I am the most vocal about it. Yes, everyone has a right to their opinion, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk about it.

Re: #48

What a whiner. Wah! Wah! Wah!

Do us all a favor and get your diaper changed so that you are less of a malcontent.

49. K-7
Yeah, that’s really mature. How old are you? 12?
