Cumberbatch: There Is ‘Room’ For Khan To Return For Star Trek 2016 + Quinto Agrees

zoepreg

Could the 2016 Star Trek movie be a repeat for Benedict Cumberbatch? Well according to the actor, it’s possible. Find out what Cumberbatch (and Zachary Quinto) are saying at San Diego Comic-Con about the return of Khan.

Cumberbatch Talks Thawing Out Khan For 2016 + Quinto’s Khan Comments

The big secret revealed in last summer’s Star Trek Into Darkness was that Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘John Harrison’ character was actually Khan Noonian Singh. The film ended with him captured and returned to his cryogenic pod, but could he come back in the sequel? According to Cumberbatch it is possible. While at San Diego Comic-Con to promote his role in the animated movie Penguins of Madagascar, he talked a little Trek with MTV, saying:

Maybe [Khan could come back]. He is in freezer…we have all defrosted chicken in our day…Set the toaster to defrost and he will come out all bad and angry again. I don’t know. It depends on what direction they are going to take. There is definitely room for him to come back in some shape or form.

The actor also discussed that that he did talk to Into Darkness director JJ Abrams about maybe rejoining him on Star Wars Episode VII, however in the end "It made sense not to do it."

MTV also talked to Zachary Quinto who said he was "really excited" about the Star Trek sequel. Specifically on the notion of Cumberbatch returning as Khan he said:

Any chance to work with Benedict…But I don’t know if it is now or later. I don’t know what they have in store for Ben? I would love to have him back.

Quinto also confirmed that he "doesn’t think" he will be part of

Quinto also said he doesn’t think he will be returning to the role of Sylar for NBC’s upcoming Heroes Reborn.

Oh please let this not happen…..

Leave it for a few years until he looks like Montalban in TWOK.

It’s too soon.

You forgot a selector

“Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

Talk about your hot button issues. This should be an interesting thread …

oh yes, please do happen – Cumberbatch was Great!

Sure, why not ? Bring Nero as well /s

Not for ST3 but I’d like to see him back in ST 5 or 6 if they do that many…I say this cause cumberbatch at the end of STID, once he kills admiral robocop, finally dropped his facade & was the real khan…his exchange with spock was great….so in my mind we only saw the real Kahn for the last 20 mins of the movie & that part of the movie cumberbatch was great in….when he was john Harrison he was kinda bland boring….he’d be a nice dovetail to end this run of st with this cast

Bring it back for Star Trek 6 or 7 if they will happen. Bring him back for the next crew if that will happen. But leave him out of ST3 or 4 or even 5 …

noooooooooooooo!

As much as I love Cumberbatch as an actor, even as well as he played the part, he should not have played Kahn. Kahn was not an Englishter.

No, no, no, no, a thousand times no!

hummmm…

Khan shouldn’t have been used in the last movie, let alone the next one!

ENOUGH!!

Sure, why not do a cut and paste rework of the Undiscovered Country while we’re at it. I mean if went through the trouble of rebooting just to abandon originality…

Sure, if the story calls for Khan to return in some credible manner then why not?

I think the best route Orci and Co. could take is to re-introduce the prime universe.

Just lets not have all this secrecy around it this time, lets reveal this story and get excited about it!

@13. Harry Ballz,
“Khan shouldn’t have been used in the last movie”

Hold on there cowboy … Khan was in the last movie!?

I think it’s time to go in a different direction next time. No more of the tired “mad man out for revenge” routine!

Yes, please. And while we’re at it, let’s recast Uhura and Sulu with white British actors. That would make about as much sense as having BC play Khan. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Bring back Admiral Marcus and a CG Ricardo Montalban as well.

Please no!!! Not again. I was already so against using Khan the first time. And they really didn’t make it work well in the last movie, just like I feared. The whole big reveal that his name is Khan simply didn’t make any sense, because he had no previous history with the Enterprise characters. So why should it matter to Kirk and the rest?

If they would have at least made his character more multilayered, it wouldn’t have been so bad. But instead of only making him hate Marcus and what he has done, he also turns completely into a villain against Kirk and the Enterprise crew, who probably would have helped him rescue his people, if he would have acted friendly. Just like Nero, his motivation for a lot of bad deeds were just being cliche evil. Both killing tons of people, who did nothing bad to them. I mean Marcus could have been the sole cliche evil villain. Khan in contrast could have remained more of a grey character like he was in the earlier part of the movie. Someone who does evil deeds, but for understandable reasons, like freeing his people and getting revenge at people, who may have been able to prevent their imprisonment. But at the end he goes into complete dark territory and kills tons of people, who had nothing to do with anything. That was disappointing.

Definately not!

This needs to be an original adventure; no more re-imagined characters forth alternate timeline. Not yet at least.

I would like to see the Klingons have more of a role…maybe the crew encounter a new alien enemy while the Klingons have a ship or two hunt down the Enterprise out of revenge for Khan attacking them in ST:ID.

@ 15. Picard, Jean-Luc – July 26, 2014

“Sure, if the story calls for Khan to return in some credible manner then why not? ”

Yeah, Kirk & Khan, brothers in [magic] blood stand together against the most powerful enemy in the universe, the Ferengi!

Hopefully, Orci isn’t doing a Kirk versus the Borg script. YUCK!

Please no terrible actor, terrible mis-cast part which hurt STID more than anything else.

I cannot imagine Paramount would repeat the same mistake……

NO!! It would be (another) dreadful mistake!

$$$ say yes, then we will see Kahn again.

$$$ say no, then we won’t.

I agree with those who say that it would be nice to see several movies down the line.

No…no Khan in 2016. Besides, Ben would just overshadow the cast playing Kirk & crew anyway…just like he did last time. Vastly superior actor.

Yes please. Benedict was phenomenal as khan.

Not yet. Give it a couple more films, then bring him back

LOL. Yeah. If it doesn’t work the first time, do the same thing again.

ST 2016: Strange. New. Worlds.

Star Trek Vengeance of Khan

set after the Enterprises 5 year mission. an augment worshipping nut wakes up a furious Khan (like the engineer in Prometheus) and he breaks out of Area 51 (now located on Ceti Alpha V) with some of his followers (most are killed in the escape) hijacks science ship Reliant which is running tests on the new Genesis device (constructed by Carol Marcus) and plots revenge on the Federation (& Kirk/Spock)

meanwhile the klingons have been plotting an invasion of the federation after the khanage in STID, led by the sinister Colonel Chang and the brutal Captain Kruge (kirk vs khan vs klingons = total Khanage!)

tagline – At the end of darkness…lies vengeance!

*Guest stars- Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan, Alice Eve as Dr Marcus, Bryan Cranston as Colonel Chang, Jason Moma as Capt Kruge, Colin Firth as Gorkon, Taylor Kitch as Joachim, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Capt Terrel

*Cameos- Arnold Schwarzenegger – Klingon Emperor, Harrison Ford – Head of Starfleet, Stephen Collins – Admiral Decker, Scott Bakula – Captain Archer, Brent Spiner – Dr Soong, Patrick Stewart – Picards ancestor, Michael Dorn – Worfs ancestor, Leonard Nimoy – Spock Prime, William Shatner – Old Kirk, Richardo Montalban – Khan (CG flashback) ..

I would rather Kirk encounter the Borg in some way witch is still a f##king brilliant idea.

But other than bring khan back let’s bring nero back from the dead while were at it. No and no more Klingons I think there in almost every star trek film ever made.

Just bring something fresh and new for once.

Kirk is awoken in his quarters and informed that they’ve just been contacted by the Kobiyashi Maru. He immediately realizes that he’s been trapped in the new holosimulator running his first no-win test for a year and a half. He saves the Maru, exits the simulator, and is greeted by his instructor played by Victoria Principal

His part wasn’t really finished, one way or another. There is potential for Khan to return and not just cos he’s played by Benedict either.

By the way it’s SYLAR not Skylar!! From Heroes!

” LOL. Yeah. If it doesn’t work the first time, do the same thing again.”

Hah! Hollywood has done stranger things.

I love Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock et al), but it was already too soon in Into Darkness. Please, get off the crutches and let’s do some real Trekking.

I liked Cumberbatch in that role, so, I selected “maybe”. If there’s a compelling non-vengeance reason to bring him back, sure…why not?

I’m still hoping the next one will be an all new story of exploration and not a “villain” story. The “Villain” should come out of the story and a conflict of interests with the Enterprise crew.

Please! No more mustache twirlers!!

I cannot imagine Paramount would repeat the same mistake……

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh ha ha ha aaaaaaaaaah ha hahah

That jerky knee is acting up again? Do I have to give you another warning?

@32. Khan 2.0,
“Star Trek Vengeance of Khan”

You might be closer than any of us think …

However, if so, Kirk will be on his 5 year mission as promised, and all of this will happen while they are exploring Ceti Alpha V — the Klingons will surprise them, as will Khan and his crew (but they are frozen on Delta Vega where the Reliant is picking up supplies). This time Kirk will team up with the Klingons to defeat Khan, thus preventing a war he was otherwise responsible for starting.

If these guys knew anything about good movie making + Star Trek…you don’t bring him back. You want to move forward. Khan had his reboot, his movie. Its extremely unfortunate and a damn shame that it wasn’t Benicio Del Toro. But whats done is done. Move on to bigger and better.

At this point until we know more, I can’t say Im excited for Trek XIII. Now Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar on the other hand, I’m really excited for.

Star Trek 13 should transcend and open the mind to new possibilities. Make this a Trek movie like no other.

I never wanted to see Khan in the second movie, but we have what we have – get over it.

I agree that we do not need to see Khan or any of the other popsicles. There are surely far more interesting worlds and personages to meet.

The only way that Khan could come back is if he was to be shown to have had a genuine epithany. Khan was angry, vengeful and very cruel – but, for some reason, he felt he could trust Kirk and later Spock (even though he did not return in kind). When the torpedoes blew up the Vengeance, he believed that Spock had betrayed him.

Perhaps, upon seeing the fact that his crew were spared, safe and well, he might have a moment of genuine awakening, an epithany. Kirk (and Spock) do keep the promises Kirk made to him, ie a) Kirk would see that Khan stood trial for his crimes and b) that Khan’s crew would be kept safe, would not be harmed.

If Khan is awoken, it would be interesting to know if this epiphany could have any bearing on his long term behaviours, given that so much of his mind and thought and emotional processes have been engineered…in spite of this manipulation, could Khan still possess a tiny gem of higher consciousness, of conscience? Would he be willing to develop this aspect? Could genuine empathy and sympathy for others be developed? How trustworthy might he become, if at all?

Just an idea…

@ 23. I’m a Talosian. Hey you never know. It worries me. Everything was sped up in this universe. Because of Nero, technology advanced way faster. They had TMP admiral uniforms what…2 decades earlier than prime. Who knows who they could encounter out there from TNG later. It could be good, it could be bad. Besides I’ve always wondered what the Borg looked like in Kirks time not to mention how they would look in the alternate universe. The first Borg update we ever had was in First Contact and damn they looked way better than the TNG version. Less headgear, fewer idiotic looking tubes from their heads. If done right it could be good, but if its just shoehorned in to the movie for a “just because” sake than it will fail because it does not feel right.

Something random: I always thought Arnold’s Mr. Freeze from Batman & Robin looked like a chromed out Borg King.

@ 28. Lia Pimenov. Ugh, Benedict is an amazing actor, awesome Sherlock, but he was a poor Khan. His acting may have been great but he did not fit the part. Khan was not a pasty caucasian. I wanted the Northern Indian appearance even if it was played by a latin actor. Benedict was a poor substitute and the story should have been changed to fit him.

If this movies does not do something grand like V’Ger, id like to see NuGorn or NuTholians.

There are plenty of races to choose from in TOS without having to go to the other shows. But everyone seems to complain whether its the Borg or Klingons, you can’t win. Personally I have not seen enough of the Klingons, its was such a small tease, like a strip bar, tease tease tease. I will never get sick of Klingons. I have no objection to the Borg if done right. But you have to ask what non fans would want to see, not the fans. I’ve asked non fans to name Star Trek aliens and its always three that pop up, Vulcans, Klingons, and Borg.

With regards to this alternate universe evolving and advancing faster that the prime universe (the Federation at least) than the Federation might be a great deal larger in the NuUniverse and more aliens might be incorporated which means less adversaries of old.

My vote goes for Gorn, Tholians, or Borg if were not discovering something new.

Great post and that’s the conditions under which I’d like to see Cumberbatch’s Khan return. It could work.

No. Khan ruined things for me to the point where I can’t even stand to watch Cumberbatch in anything else now, which is a shame. I loved the 2009 movie and have seen it an untold number of times, but I couldn’t watch STID a second time, and if Cumberbatch returns, I’m afraid I won’t be seeing the next movie at all.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!! I hope he comes back, as long as he isn’t the only villain. We didn’t see enough Klingons in the last movie, so they can kidnap Khan to try to reverse engineer him (again). Or, since we haven’t seen the alternate Romulans yet, they can ally with Khan as part of some overly elaborate plot to weaken the Federation. Or, the ultimate Star Trek villains can try to add Khan’s biological distinctiveness to their own, allowing them to assimilate the Federation. Or, if all else fails, the Cardassians and/or the Dominion can always be up to no good.

Whichever villain they bring back for Trek XII, I hope they also bring back Khan.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Khan and Sherlock Holmes are two different characters who just happen to have been played by the same actor, who is neither of these characters. He may have some things in common, like physical appearance… How can you be put off seeing an actor just because of one performance of a particular character? He is an actor who has played many and varied characters. He is an English actor who is all over the place – on stage, television and film(movies).

Just read this on the IMDb Star Trek Into Darkness message board –

“At this point I have given up hope of ever again seeing a Star Trek movie that does not offend me—one with a good plot, decent characterization, science that is not obtrusively horrible, etc. I have only one heartfelt plea left for you: Please, please, do not completely destroy the essence, the very soul, of Star Trek. Leave out the campiness, the bad taste, the repetitive plagiarism, the gimmicks, but mose especially leave out the excessive, genocidal, meaningless violence. Remember that there are more intelligent, inventive ways to deal with the “villains” of your movies than always blowing them up. Thank you.”

That was a review of TWOK in a 1982 fanzine found here: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Interstat/Issues_061-070. Any of it sound familiar?”

The more things change, the more they stay the same…oh dear…LOL
