George Takei (& Brad) Headed To ‘Newlywed Game’ + More Takei Updates September 15, 2009

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Celebrity, TOS , trackback

A year ago yesterday George Takei married his long-time partner Brad Altman, which apparently still qualifies him as a ‘newlyweds’ as a celebrity contestant (with Brad) on the new The Newlywed Game . Details on that below, plus a new 1 year anniversary video interview with the pair and more, including news of Takei playing the Emperor of China in an upcoming British ‘panto’.

George and Brad, still Newlyweds
The Game Show Network (aka GSN), brought back the classic game show The Newlywed Game earlier this year, now hosted by Carnie Wilson. Today RadarOnline is reporting (and confirmed by TrekMovie) that GSN is lining up celebrity guest contestants, including George Takei and Brad Altman. George and Brad will be the first same-sex couple on the show, although apparently they weren’t the first choice. According to RadarOnline, GSN got turned down by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. George and Brad tape their episode later this month, and it should air in November. More on GSN’s The Newlywed Game at the official site.

Even though they still qualify as newlyweds, George and Brad just celebrated their one year anniversary. A Japanese fansite dedicated to George (georgetakei.jp) has a special anniversary video interview with the pair, which also has some video clips from their wedding.

Takei interview
Here is video of a radio interview George recently did on the Preston and Steve Show on the Philadelphia station WMMR (promoting Star Trek The Exhibition). George talks about his history of Star Trek, meeting JJ Abrams, his relationship with William Shatner, and breaks news that he will be added his voice to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Takei Update
What else is George up to these days? Well, quite a bit, actually. Here is a breakdown.

George’s Kimmel skit
By the way, if you missed the update to our previous story on George, here is the skit he did last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live (starts around 3:22).

How come Takei is the most popular original Trek crew member? Seems like he’s all over the place. And hope we don’t have to hear any more about the Takei/Shatner fight, or whatever.

2. That One Guy - September 15, 2009

Awww….

I love George and Brad.

3. CarlG - September 15, 2009

Aww, they’re kind of a cute couple… :)

That pantomime thing sounds like fun! Too bad I’m on the wrong continent, though…

Happy pre-anniversary, guys! Live Long, etc.

Is it just me or issnt the newlywed game for people that are A) Newlyweds and B) didnt know each other long before getting married? Hasnt George been with his partner for a couple decades?

5. david salazar - September 15, 2009

They already did this on stern. Lame

6. capt.Roykirk - September 15, 2009

Good point AC. Surprised there hasn’t been more comments on a Takei article, as there usually are. Of course a lot of us can’t say what we want to in this venue, so maybe that’s why.

George, congratulations on your marriage and all, but, really, perhaps we can stop the personal stuff and have you featured in what you do best — being an actor.

If, on the other hand, Hollywood isn’t giving you roles, perhaps there is something to be said to raise consciousness concerning that.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender”?!

Holy crap, REALLY?!
(I’m not good with English, but I feel like something wrong with the sentence… That’s why it sounds unbelievable.)

9. CmdrR - September 16, 2009

Congrats, George and Brad. Many more.

10. Astroboy - September 16, 2009

I wish I could see GT on Newlywed, but GSN isn’t part of my cable subscription. George is very talented and very lucky, because asian actors have a hard time finding work. Congrats on the 1st Anniversary and many, many more!

11. Lore - September 16, 2009

BIG NEWS! Shatner is guest host of the episode!

12. Astroboy - September 16, 2009

Lore, is Shatner guest-hosting on the Newlywed episode where George & Brad are contestants? How strange is that? ROTFLMAO!!!!

13. Balok - September 16, 2009

Good George interview, he seemed really over the top annoying in some videos/inteviews over the last year or two, but seems here more like the likeable guy that I recall in years past…

Ha, if I could catch the NewlyWed game, I would, maybe soemone will post a clip here or on Youtube…

14. Treknut - September 16, 2009

George and Brad were busy a few weeks ago helping to make our dreams come true by playing a small part in helping us plan our wedding. We will be forever grateful to them. We spent some time with these two extraordinary people who made this a day we will never forget.

Here is one article that tells the story:

I’m surprised no one mentioned that George is a new character in the PS3 game “Pain”

16. Losira - September 17, 2009

17. Danpaine - September 17, 2009

Nice story, Treknut. Congratulations. I live only a few minutes from Philly myself.

18. jocor - September 17, 2009

I’m not a fan of the idea.

First of all I saw some of the new Newlywed game and as copies of copies go it was hopelessly decayed. The most pointless, non-entertaining, un-charismatic drivel I’ve ever seen.

Nevertheless The Newlywed Game is an American institution. I’m not against gays necessarily but I don’t want to see it on the Newlywed Game. It seems more like they’re trying to make a point or hustle ratings than anything else and I think a great many of their few viewers are going to be offended.

On a side note I’m listening to an artificially edited Dean Martin duet album with pretentious entertainers of today and must say I am no fan of Joss Stone.

19. jocor - September 17, 2009

He was pretty cool on the radio show though.

Looking forward to Airbender hope to see him there.

20. Bill Hiro - September 18, 2009

George as Galactus is great voice casting.
